Always Hungry Cant Lose Weight!

I have been gluten free since October 2009, and have felt over-all MUCH better!! :) Solved my anemia which coincided with my EXTREME tiredness. I am by NO means overweight/ fat. But I would like to be in better shape, more toned, lose 5-10 lbs. (Like everyone else in the world..) I find that I can't work out too hard because I fall into extreme exhaustion and its hard to walk home afterward and I just want to sleep! I also find that I am hungry ALL the time- I could just eat and eat and never be "full." I feel I eat pretty well balanced with the exception of whole grains. I guess I'm not not sure what to eat and its very frustrating navigating a grocery store outside of white rice and rice pastas... I find most store bought gluten-free breads horrendous and so don't eat much bread either... Any tips!? Anyone else suffering from lethargicness and the inability to lose weight along with an insatiable hunger?

have you checked in with your doctor to rule out any thyroid or other issues? that would be my first suggestion. SOMETHING isn't right, and I am sure that is very frustrating. I can't think of anything to recommend until you can rule out some other illness or allergy.

I have been gluten free since March of 2008. I started gaining weight last year when my doctor put me on Asacol. I gained about 30 pounds in 4 months and quit taking the meds. Since then, I cannot lose any weight! I have recently started P90X, a routine I completed without trouble and with fantastic results in 2009 (before the meds). I am so tired after workouts that I can't hardly continue with my day, and I have not lost any weight. I talked with a dietician, and she said that my body seems to think its not getting enough calories and is just refusing to let go of the fat. Any advice or input?

I can help you out here with your diet. But, I'm going to need more information from you.

What are your current stats (Height, Weight)

Can you list the food/beverages of your typical day (start from the time that you get up and list absolutely EVERYTHING.... even if it's a handful.

Please also give me an idea of your beverage intake.

List that, and I'll help you out from there.

JM, I too am always hungry and too fatigued to do much exercise. Up until about 4 months ago (I was diagnosed just over 2 months ago) I was cycling every day, running and felt great apart from constant abdominal pain which my Dr and I attributed to healing muscle tissue from major abdom surgery. Then all of a sudden I was struck down by incredible fatigue (by comparison I felt more energetic the day after major abdominal surgery!) - I stopped running, cycling, walking, had trouble lasting a whole day at work etc - I was anaemic so sups helped.

Since diagnosis via biopsy I have improved slightly - I say I have good days and bad days. I still have stomach pain most days. But I am no longer nauseas every day. I have bad brain fog on days I feel tired and sore which makes working really hard.

I am vegetarian and in Australia we are told not to eat oats either. Its difficult to find food thats filling and nutritious. Rice based pastas and cereals taste OK, but I have always thought that rice was basically fairly empty of nutrition say compared to whole grain bread. Rice based muesli is certainly not as filling as oats for breakfast.

I too would like to lose a few pounds - not much - just enough to fit comfortably back in my jeans. How are you going now JM?

      Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

      That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

      Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

      Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

      Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
