Question For Anyone Who Knows

Hey, this is my first post and I'm also a new member.

I've been living with celiac for about the last 5 years and

only with knowledge that I had it for the past year and a half.

I will be doing some extensive traveling over the next several

months and was wondering if Immodium Ad actually did help

on a day to day basis with feeling of having to run to the bathroom

or is it more of just a placebo (if I spelled that right), meaning

that you just think it helps but it doesn't have true effects on

"freezing up your system"?

Thanks, Mike

Mike,

I have no experience with Immmodium, and the only advice (though probably not healthy advice per se) I can offer is that when I have the 'symptoms' and absolutely have to be out and about without running to the toilet, I just let myself dehydrate pretty thouroughly. Your body can't do it's thing without any water in you...

Welcome to the board, and hopefully you'll get more responses that don't involve water-denial!

I would be lost without Immodium AD! I have taken 1 when I have to be out for the day and it does work! Just make sure you eat enough fruit ir fiber to keep from getting too constipated. Use it sparingly, but don't be afraid to use it!

Stay away from sugar esp. mixed with dairy and slow down on the carbs ex. potato, sweet potato, rice. Limit yourself to one serving a day. If you notice your stomach makes noises when you have too much of these foods. If your on plane sometimes people get const. anyway because of sitting down for so long.

I always have Immodium AD in my purse for emergencies. Since you have had celiac disease for 5 years, I assume you already are on the gluten-free diet?

Imodium is a lifesaver! It helps me function as a normal human being. It does usually take an hour or so to start working for me though. I have tried many AD's and this is the best. I have never been constipated from its use either. I have a bottle at home, one in my purse, and one in our camper. Never leave home without it!!!

Hey, thanks so much all of you for your replies, this message board by far has been the most helpful to me. As I will be flying out to California this Monday, its doubtful that I'll be able to get to a computer all too often to check the boards, but I will say hi and whatnot as often as possible. Regarding the question on being on a gluten-free diet, the answer is yes for the most part. Being a college student and having limited funds is difficult. When worse comes to worse, I'll eat as much fruit and vegetables as possible cause its the best for me and usually the cheapest. So thats about all for now and again to all of you thanks so much, talk to ya soon.

Mike

I hope you are on the mend soon. About 1 in 5 people who contracted chicken pox as a child go on to develop shingles in later life - it is not uncommon. There are 5 known members of the herpes virus family including chicken pox that commonly infect humans, and they all cause lifelong infections. The exact cause of viral reactivation as in the case of shingles or cold sores is not well understood, but stress, sunburn and radiotherapy treatment are known triggers. Some of the herpes viruses are implicated in triggering autoimmune diseases: Epstein-Barr virus is suspected of triggering multiple sclerosis and lupus, and there is a case where it is suspected of triggering coeliac disease. As to whether coeliac disease can increase the likelihood of viral reactivation, there have been several cohort studies including a large one in Sweden suggesting that coeliac disease is associated with a moderate increase in the likelihood of developing shingles in people over the age of 50. US 2024 - Increased Risk of Herpes Zoster Infection in Patients with Celiac Disease 50 Years Old and Older Sweden 2018 - Increased risk of herpes zoster in patients with coeliac disease - nationwide cohort study

BFree bread is fortified with vitamins and minerals as is ASDA own-brand gluten-free bread. All the M&S bread seems to be fortified also.

You might try Heallix.  It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball.  It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again,  not in your eyes or ears.   Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also,  I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out.

Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate
