I Glutened Myself

Ok, so I need some coping tips for being glutened.

What happened: I had a little bit too much to drink on Saturday at a wedding reception, went home late and ordered a pizza with my boyfriend. After about the third or fourth bite I realized what I was doing... but it tasted.so.good. So I kept eating and decided I would call this my gluten challenge, as I had been gluten free for 2 weeks. I thought, ok, I'll test this out and see how I feel.

The next day (Sunday) I felt like I had the flu. I was dizzy, insanely bloated and constipated (which is typical, but it was intense) and I felt extremely nauseous, lower back pain, with absolutely no energy all day.

I know you're probably thinking back to the fact that I admitted that I did drink too much- but this wasn't a typical hangover at all. I felt like all I wanted to do was sleep, but I just couldn't.

So now it's monday and my stomach hurts, I'm still really bloated and I feel like I haven't slept in days.

I drank water all day yesterday and laid on the couch.

My question for you guys is, what do I do now?!

Thanks so much!

Sorry you're feeling so sick. It's so tempting to test whether you still need the diet, especially for something good like pizza.

You pretty much have to weather the storm. There is no way to "undo" eating gluten. Drink lots of water to help your body flush toxins and take whatever you usually do for stomach aches. Pepto Bismol (brand name is gluten-free) has always helped me. Eat bland foods like you would as you recover from a stomach flu.

L-Glutamine helps to bind Wheat Germ Agglutin so your body can start to clean it out.

D-Mannose helps to bind Gluten.

but supplements can only do so much- the best thing is to NEVER eat the poison again.. i know it's hard- i cheated on wheat & gluten off & on for the last decade- and im done now. ready to feel good.

My advice to you is to let it all get out of your system!! Avoid any immodium or anything because then it just lets it build in your system and its best to get that junk out!! I sip sprite and eat plain rice sometimes when my stomach is bothering me. I also use a heating pad to help ease my stomach pain.

I hope it passes soon for you!!

Welcome to the forum, @linnylou73! Are you claiming this based on a reaction or based upon actual testing?

This varies a lot from person to person. I include foods that are not certified gluten-free but are labelled "gluten-free", while super sensitive people only use certified gluten-free. Both types of products have been found to contain gluten, so there are no guarantees either way: It you are in the super sensitive group, eating a whole foods based diet where you prepare everything is the safest bet, but it's also difficult. Eating out is the the most risky, even if a restaurant has a gluten-free menu. I also include items that are naturally gluten-free, for example refried beans, tuna, pasta sauces, salsas, etc., which have a low overall risk of contamination.

I avoid turmeric now because I'm on low dose aspirin, but used to use this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HYBN4DJ My recipes always vary according to what I have on hand, but my base is a frozen berry mix from Trader Joe's: https://www.traderjoes.com/home/products/pdp/fruits-greens-smoothie-blend-075603 In the warmer months I include herbs from my garden like Italian parsley and basil. I add almond milk as well.
