What Do You Think?

I was diagnosed with celiac a couple weeks ago. As I started to educate myself I notice that my 9 year old daughter has symptoms which concern me. She has always had a super high gag reflex, so often vomits. But she has complained more and more lately of stomach aches. She also recently had a few days of D, which resulted in her ruining her underwear (unheard of for this child, who has been potty trained since 2). I have been concerned about ADHD for the last couple of years but have always been hesitant to put that lable on her or look into meds. At 9 years old she weighs 60 lbs. Does it warrant testing...or am I becoming a hypochondric by proxy??? :(

You are absolutely not being a "hypochondriac by proxy" (great phrase!). Celiac runs in families so if you have celiac, your daughter's risk is about 1 in 20. With her symptoms, it absolutely makes sense to have her tested. Once the tests are done, even if they're negative you may want to see if the diet helps her feel calmer, stops the stomachaches, and lets her grow a little better.

I'm with Skylark - not hypochondriac at all. In fact, if you have any siblings, you should see if they would agree to get tested, too. Parents as well. They all have that 1 in 20 chance of having the disease.

My father was diagnosed a few years back, and we tested no one. Then I came up positive and everyone got tested. My daughter AND my brother came back positive. My son had symptoms, and even though he came back negative, we took him off gluten, and his symptoms disappeared as well, so I'm thinking false negative test for him, or he simply doesn't do well with gluten.

It's definitely worth checking out.

Thanks for the feed back. I will also let you know my DS has been avoiding gluten for a couple years now due research he did and it making him feel better (and cut down his acne!) I feel like I now "see" celiac everywhere. I have talked with my relatives about being tested. Some are avoiding because ingnorance is "bliss" :o I can't say thank you enough to all the help I have found on this site!

Was the card itself lost or just the record or both?

We were flabergasted that the owner would not acknowledge a $50 e-gift card I purchased for my celiac wife. My wife tried to open it in the store and was informed there had been a system change and they could not find the record. No worries, she was told, just talk to management. Six months later, and numerous absurd back and forths, and the owner literally informs me there have been "bad actors", so she can't make good on this lost gift card. In other words, she accused me of lying and committing fraud... over $50! Please be careful with your orders and purchases here.

Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding
