Testing For Child?

Hi,

First post here and a question about testing kids with celiac. My daughter is part of a medical study and one of the things they tested for at her last visit was celiac. They have found a number of their children who are involved in the study to have this. They did the blood test (I don't have the exact name of the test) and she tested positive. their cut off for positivity was .05 and she was .086??? They will be repeating this same test when she goes in for her next visit, but what else should I be looking out for as far as symptoms? She doesn't seem to have any of the classic markers. She is growing well and very bright. She does have pretty severe mood swings and will sometimes complain that her tummy hurts. But she will lay down and 5 minutes later be up and playing again. Would you wait to have your child tested again when she goes in next (we were told no dietary changes and have not done so) or just ask to be referred to the gastro? Very confused and the research I have done into this have not given me any help. We also just did the panel for my son who is 1 and tiny, 28" and 17 lbs 12 oz. He is often crying in pain but it didn't seem to be related to his tummy. His bloodwork came back normal. Do we need to retest him later on if he continues his slow growth?

Thanks for all you help.

Welcome!

According to Dr. Peter Green, Director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, the anti-deaminated gliadin peptide (DGP) test is much better than any other test, for children. He also suggests that a suspected child have TWO positive tTG test before they are subjected to an endoscopy and biopsy.

It would be important to know what type of test you children were given.

I cut out the rice because it was affecting my stomach at the time ... not necessarily dermatitis herpetiformis. It was Tilda Basmati Rice, sometimes wholegrain rice. I was willing to do whatever it took to heal. Too much fiber also disagrees with me as I have UC.

But you didn't answer my question. When you consume gluten, is there an identifiable reaction within a short period of time, say a few hours?

You can still have celiac disease with negative blood test results, although it's not very common:  Clinical and genetic profile of patients with seronegative coeliac disease: the natural history and response to gluten-free diet: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5606118/  Seronegative Celiac Disease - A Challenging Case: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9441776/  Enteropathies with villous atrophy but negative coeliac serology in adults: current issues: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34764141/

I am only wondering why you would need to cut out rice? I've never heard of rice being any issue in those with DH.

My mother has celiac disease and was diagnosed with Afib around 8 months ago. She's 81 and around 2 months ago had ablation therapy done, which is a very common procedure to treat this, and has been out of Afib 95% of the time since then. Apparently the full effects of this treatment don't kick in for 90 days, so the doctors expect her recovery to possibly reach 100%. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor.
