Projectile Vomiting When Fed Bread. =(

My 12 month old I suspect has gluten intolerance. She has had severe ongoing cycles of painful constipation followed by diarrhea. She cries and fusses constantly when eating gluten and gets up 8-11 times a night. I first started noticing it right after starting her on solids (oatmeal was one of her first foods). So after eliminating all solids and adding them back slowly I narrowed it down to gluten. I put her on a gluten free diet and after a few days she got better and a couple weeks later was sleeping much better at night and pooping every day normally. I put her back on gluten (I gave her 1 cracker) and it messed her up for 3 days. She has been gluten free since then unless I mess up and contaminate her food or feed her something I thought was gluten free but wasn't. Well I decided to get her tested for celiac because she has a doc appointment coming up and my husband doesn't believe me that she has problems. So Last night I let her have some french fries that were coated in flour and at snack time today I gave her half a piece of bread. Last night nothing much happened except she got a rash on her jaw and she slept horribly. After I fed her the bread she seemed to be ok but then 20 minutes later she projectile vomited all over the place. It just kept coming and coming. So now I am not sure I can feed her gluten every day for a couple of weeks so she can be tested accurately. I just don't want to make her sick. How do you test if it makes them so sick?? I am going to discuss this with the doc and see what he thinks we should do but seriously I don't think I can continue to feed her gluten. I want to know if she has celiac but I don't want to torturer her. =(

I am really surprised by the vomiting. Before it took about 3 days for gluten to affect her terribly, before that it was just her mood and wakefulness at night that was a clue something wasn't right. Did I cause her damage by putting her on a gluten free diet?? Is she now MORE sensitive to gluten because she was off of it and then I gave it to her?

I don't think it would be considered damage but it could cause a false negative on the blood tests.

Yes, she probably is more sensitive now because she was starting to heal and now her little body is being bombarded with gluten again.

Maybe you could call your Dr. and tell them that she is really sick and can they get her in quicker. I know at our Dr. we can call and get a sick child appt the same day. My sons Dr. sent us to our childrens hospital to for the blood tests and an x-ray.

She seems much better now. She took a really long nap and has been really snugly but no more vomiting. I know they can do a test to check for the genes involved to see if she is likely to have it but the blood test to check for antibodies requires you to be on gluten for a few weeks right? I just don't think I can keep her on gluten that long. It would be terrible for her to be sick every day just to do a blood test.

well its the next day after the projectile vomiting after eating bread. This morning I woke up to the most horrific smelling diaper. My daughters poop was not normal at all. It was very pale, whitish yellow and smelled across the house. It was very light, only a shade or two darker than the white of the diaper and kind of clay like. That's not normal at all is it? She has a rash all over her face this morning. Little raised dots that itch. She had that last night too but there are more now. She is also very snugly and I can tell she doesn't feel great. No more gluten for her. I feel so bad =(

my daughter is 18 mos and was diagnoses at 14 mos solely on a blood test. she was projectile vomiting every other day, miserable, distended abdomen and diarrhea started around time of diagnosis. I was told to put her back on gluten for 3-4 weeks for the biopsy but I refused, it took at least a week for the vomiting to stop once gluten free and 2 mos for normal stools. I just couldn't put her through it again. If she's feeling better without gluten then I'd say keep her gluten free.
