Worried About Mom

My mother has had oral erosive lichen planus for about 9 months and she said its not getting better. She recently started the gluten free diet and she said its even worse now - could that actually be a good sign? perhaps its a sign that gluten was causing the problem and its her body's way of going into defense mode. anyway, aside from the diet is there anything else she can do to treat this? i feel so bad for her and shes concerned about oral cancer. would appreciate any feedback

thanks

Jason

What I read about that condition said that it's higly correlated with other immunological conditions (like gluten intolerance). So perhaps your mom went off gluten and then accidentally consumed some gluten after a period of abstinence. Most people get even worse reactions after they abstain for awhile and then consume gluten. So perhaps that later reaction also exacerbated her other immune condition. Reacting more intensely after abstaining from gluten is neither a sign that she's getting well or getting worse. That's merely an immunological phenomena.

Might be worth looking at vitamin supplementation like Vitamin E, A, C, D, Zinc etc. Have to be careful about amounts taken though as some are fat soluble and you can take too much.

That means the normal range (i.e. not celiac disease) would be a result less than 14.99.  Your result is WAY above that. Some gastroenterologists would diagnose that as celiac disease even without a confirming biopsy because it is more than ten times the top of the normal range.

Hi everyone. Back in 2022 I had blood work drawn for iga ext gliadin. Since then I’ve developed worse stomach issues and all other health issues. My doctor just said cut out gluten. He did no further testing. Please see my test results attached. I just need some direction cause I feel so ill and the stomach pain is becoming worse. Can this test show indications for other gastrointestinal diseases?

Thank you. These were the results TTG ABS NUMERICAL: > 250.0 U/mL [< 14.99]  Really don’t understand the results!

Clearly from what you've said the info on Dailymed is much more up to date than the other site, which hasn't been updated since 2017. The fact that some companies might be repackaging drugs does not mean the info on the ingredients is not correct.

To evaluate the TTG antibody result we’d need to know the normal range for that lab.  Labs don’t all use the same units.  However, based on any normal ranges that I’ve seen and the listed result being greater than a number rather than a specific number, I’d say yes, that is high! Higher than the range where the test can give a quantitative result. You got good advice not to change your diet yet.  If you went gluten free your intestines would start to heal, confusing any further testing,
