Has anyone been to Destin Florida and had to shop or try to eat out there? We are going there for vacation and plan on taking most of our stuff to cook at the condo but just in case...Anyone know anywhere to eat and the items...or anyone know anything about the stores there?

Oh and I am feeding a 2 year old if that helps :D

I contacted all the people on the support group lists with email and they are all far away from Destin....

Anything would be appreciated :P

Thanks

Brandi

You should pack some gluten-free foods for your trip. I lived near there a decade ago, but I can't imagine it's changed all that much. In regular stores, you'll find all the regular foods, of course. So cheese, eggs, corn tortilla wraps *someone posted about heating tortillas with a little butter on both sides and it really softens up the tortilla and helps to hold it together better*, fruity pebbles, yogurt, fruits, meats, etc...you should be fine shopping in the local shopping mart. Pack a loaf of gluten-free bread and bring cookies and Tinkyada. Oh, and a tupperware container to bring along his dinner in restaurants. Have fun!

Well in April I was in Appalachicola and I can tell you they are gluten clueless... there was a health food store there that had some gluten-free products and the regular grocery store, a piggly wiggly had regular stuff (chicken, eggs, dairy) but no gluten-free products.

but the restaurants were another story, I only found one place that didn't gluten me, they were willing to cook my food totally plain. Every place else just kept putting stuff like spices on things even when I asked them not too.

Even when I clearly explained flour/wheat/gluten they didn't get it. I had one waitress tell me I was going to die without whole wheat grains in my diet, that they were necessary for life. Sigh. also in the panhandle of florida everything is fried in peanut oil so if you have any peanut problems keep that in mind. My daughter couldn't eat anywhere.

Oh great...My oldest is allergice to NUTS...so now I have to worry about that....We always ask but I am from Mississippi and they dont cook alot of stuff in Peanut oil...LOL

Thanks for the comments....I told hubby last night we would just fix him a plate and take with us...Just to be on the safe side :P

The people in resturants dont amaze me at all...You go to a steak place and you ask them the ?? about is your steak cooked on the same grill with anything that has any type of wheat in it and they say no I dont think so...Then they act like your crazy for asking all of this.....Makes me really mad...You know people who are diabetic it is normal for them to ask about the sugar but WE are crazy for asking about wheat and it it 200000000 times harder with wheat than sugar

Yes please do watch the peanut oil thing... the panhandle is right near Georgia peanut country and I'd say 99% of the places we went to do fry in peanut oil, that was a real pain. There was very little my daughter could eat due to cross contamination.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
