How To Know Where Soy Is?

Hello

I recently found out my son is allergic to soy. I am a little confused on what ingredients indicate hidden soy. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their list of ingredients they avoid. Here is the list I'm currently working with

Anything that says soy, soya or soja

Natural Flavor, Artificial Flavor, Flavor

Mono and Diglycerides

Vitamin E, Tocopherals

MSG

Vegatable anything thats not specified

Guar Gum

I've seen alot of different lists on line, and am hoping to hear from some people on what actually makes them react, so I can decide if this list is overkill, or not extensive enough. Thank you.

I'm not sure where you are.

In the US, soy is a top-eight allergen and must, by law (FALCPA) be clearly disclosed in the ingredient list when present. The eight are wheat, soy, milk, peanuts, eggs, tree nuts, fish, and crustacean shellfish.

In Canada, it is a top-ten allergen. The above eight are included, plus sesame seeds and sulphites. The presence of these can not be hidden. The Canadian regulations provide:

"... a pre-packaged food product labelled with a list of ingredients is unsafe for people with food allergies if some of those ingredients or components are priority allergens and are not declared on the label. Failure to declare allergenic components may be contrary to Subsection 5(1) of the Food and Drugs Act and Subsection 7(1) of the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act."

In both the US and Canada, the disclosure may be in the ingredient list, or in a Contains: statement following the ingredient list.

Rules are different in other countries.

These items are not soy:

Mono and Diglycerides

MSG

Guar Gum

I don't think you will find any soy in these either. As Peter said, it would have to be declared in the USA or Canada at least.

Lecithin is usually soy derived, or maybe always, I am not sure about that.

You can find soy in many vitamin pills or vegetable cooking oils also.

How sensitive to soy is your son? If he has anaphylactic reactions to minute amounts, you may want to be very careful with apples, pears, and citrus.

These fruits typically have a shellac wax coating, even the organic ones can, and soy or casein is added to that particular wax (there are other types of wax coatings that do not have soy added, to my knowledge).

If he is VERY sensitive, you may want to be careful about corn too - Wheat, corn, and soy are often rotation crops in the same field, and the corn might be contaminated.

Again, if he's not too sensitive, this is probably WAY overkill. But if it gets serious, it might be something to consider.

Your response on this matter is what I expect. You’ve had a similar episode years ago, but this one is lasting longer!

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?
