I'm So Rumbly In My Tummy!

This has been going on for several months now. The range and volume of rumbles, squeaks, gurgles, and groans coming from my tummy is just astonishing! Right now, it sounds like a summer thunderstorm on a hot Florida afternoon!! And every time my stomach starts this symphony, I think of that song sung by Winnie the Pooh, "I'm so rumbly in my tummy!"

The worst part is, it seems to always want to begin when I'm in class (I teach at a local college), and it usually waits until my students are quietly doing their work. It's embarrassing sometimes!!

Could this be a symptom of Celiac? Is there anyway to get it to shut up or at least tone it down a bit? (I haven't been diagnosed yet.)

I was diagnosed with Celiac 4 months ago.I have similar rumblings and it is my most bothersome gastro symptom.It is for me part of my celiac symptoms others may have different?If possible I would consult a doctor.I think it could possibly be a symptom of other gastro conditions.I Dont think I would want to go gluten-free without conformation.Even 4 months into a gluten-free diet this still remains for me hoping it gets better with healing and time.I hope you find a cause for yours and all goes well.Good luck.

It was definately a symptom for me. My tummy is much much quieter now. At this point for me it is the first sign I have been glutened but the D doesn't start till 2 or 3 days later, but that may not be the case for you.

Hi Lisa,

I'm not a diagnosed celiac, but I am at the very least gluten-intolerant. Tummy rumbling was one of my symptoms. Towards the end, it got very loud and very regular. I've been gluten-free for three months now and would say I only get roughly 10% of the rumbling I used to.

This is something that used to happen to me a lot. In my teen years it would happen in church during prayer, or on a date at the movies and at school too. Very embarrassing with awful anxiety and perspiration to go with it.

I sympathize with your tummy prob's. I hope you don't have h.pylori like I did.

I went to dr with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fullness in my stomach, that had gotten worse. I had lost about 20lbs in 6 months and looked like a skeleton. My stomach and intestines were almost always making loud (I mean LOUD) noises. The Dr said that it sounded like h.pylori bacteria and sent me to test for it while I waited to see the GI dr.

I was feeling so terrible and it was so loud by the time the test came back positive and he was sure I had an active case. I was begging to feel better, so he started me on Prevpac. It was a week and started feeling better. Less rumbly in the tumbly as you put it. By the time I finished the treatment, I had seen the GI dr and he said the diarrhea was consistent with Celiac disease. More blood work! Finally I had the endoscopy and was confirmed as Celiac disease.

Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat.       oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
