Anyone have trouble fighting a strep infection who is a Celiac. She had a positive rapid strep test. My child has a strep infection for now 5 days and still no better on antibiotics. Antibiotics have been changed and still not better. Going back to doctor again.

I've been plagued by repeated strep since I was quite young. I had my tonsils removed 4 years ago and it was almost no help. The past two times I've had it I had to take two different antibiotics. I'm not sure if I am developing resistance to some meds because I've taken so many or if this strep is just harder to kill.

My sister-in-law who is usually healthy and not celiac had to take three different antibiotics to get rid of strep last month. Makes me wonder if it's a resistant strain of the illness going around?

If she isn't getting better go back to the doctor and have them do a throat culture. My youngest child has had false positive rapid strep tests in the doctor's office, dispite clinically something was wrong. When he was 2 1/2 years old he had all the signs of strep throat, fever, sore red throat, swollen tonsils, fever, swollen glands and stomach ache/vomiting. His rapid test was positive an was given an antibiotic. Five days later he is worse and goes back to the doc. They change his antibiotic. More than enough days go by and not better..worse. Back we go and I insist on a throat culture (still positive rapid strep in office). I get a call back a few days later and he has MRSA and NOT strep!! :o He was put on 10 days of clindimycin and didn't get better. Went to ENT after this and was put on another 14 days of clindimycin. Amazinly, we never had to be in the hospital because he looked that bad. Finaly after about 2 months he got over it. The throat culture is much more accurate. Also there are resistant strains of strep bacteria also that may warrent a change in antibotic. My youngest son is 6 now and did fine after that episode until he started kindergarden. Since school we have been plagued by one strep infection after another. That MRSA infection left his tonsils very damaged and large, so when he does get strep now they swell and touch. We are going to see if we can get his removed now that he is older. He has never gotten the MRSA back, thank goodness.

Her strep is a long story. End of September had terrible neck pain and went to ER and was dismissed. Week later labs for strep show positive over 300. Doctor said not to worry - no antibiotics. Fast forward to end of December with new doctor. Strep blood positive once again over 300 but no symptoms and the other strep test for active infection at highest limits of normal. Prescribed week of antibiotics. Everything okay. Fast forward to now. Started with neck pain, now has throat pain, severe headache, no fever. Tonsils were taken out years ago. Yesterday we started on clindimycin. I'm at my wits end. Been to doctor 3 times. Next time I think a specialist is in order. She does not get fevers but she is hot and flushed and can't get cool.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
