What Is Your Reaction To Gluten?

My reactions typically happen days later after I have ingested gluten.

I will get all of a sudden very bloated, with the feeling of trapped gas and constipation. My fingers start to tingle and that brings an increased heart rate and anxiety. I have occasionally felt very faint and felt like I couldn't catch my breath almost mimicking an asthma attack. I also will have excessive burping and acid reflux. The initial attack is very scary, feeling like I can't breathe and the pins and needles sensations.

After those symptoms subside, I usually am still bloated, constipated, and have acid reflux/chest pain for the next few days.

I have yet to figure out how to help my symptoms or stop the anxiety/asthma attacks when this happens. Definitely a freaky feeling!

I’ve used tinctures and made my own edibles with gluten-free ingredients to stay safe. Dispensary staff don’t always know about gluten, so I double-check labels or just make my own.

It's great to hear that there are some good doctors out there, and this is an example of why having a formal diagnosis can definitely be helpful.

Update: I have a wonderful new gastroenterologist. She wants to be sure there’s nothing more serious, like refractory celiac, going on. She ordered various tests including some micronutrient tests that no one has ever ordered before.  I’m deficient in folate and zinc and starting supplements for both. I’m so glad I decided to go to a new GI!

Autoimmune diseases tend to cluster. Many of them are found close together on the chromosomes.

Just giving another update... I was referred to rheumatology, and they suspect that I may also be dealing with fibromyalgia (it has not been formally diagnosed, but just suggested at this point).  So, I am continuing with the anti-inflammatory diet and vitamins and still working to keep getting rid of all these hidden gluten sources, but I also do have another possible explanation for some of the issues that I'm dealing with.
