I have identical twins age 8, in Oct 2010 Ty was diagnosed with Type 1 diabeties, then in Jan of this year he was diagnosed with Celeic. His brother has no symptoms which has thrown us off!! I'm needing advise about a diet that he can follow, this is so hard and he isn't liking the food to well!!

Thanks, Michele

My son isn't diabetic, but he does have celiac disease. I try to follow a very naturally gluten-free diet for him as he's not crazy about the special gluten-free foods. His dinners are almost exclusively a meat, vegetable, and potato or rice. He eats salads for lunch alot, but likes pears and pudding (which you could get sugar free). What are some foods he likes and you are having trouble with - maybe we can offer alternatives.

I have 2 kids with type 1 diabetes and 1 child with celiac disease. None have both. We just follow the same meal plan for everyone. I also am an identical twin myself so I've read up a little on this. Your other twin is definitely very high risk for getting both type 1 diabetes and/or celiac disease. My other non celiac kids do eat gluten at school, but not at home. My kids had a really hard time at first. I think the best advice is to not start with gluten free pasta & breads and stick with naturally gluten free foods at first. Ease into the gluten free substitutions.

I have diabetes and my daughter has a wheat allergy. She can eat more carbs than I can. I do still eat carbs. I just have to limit them.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
