I was diagnoised with Celiac disease about 3 months ago. I was in and out of the doctor's office for about 3 months prior to that. I had the flu off and on for about 4 weeks...they kept trying to tell me it was a bug and was going around. I guess I just happen to catch it 4 times over??? Anyways finally I called the doctor complaining of blood in my stools and they tested me for celiac, so here I am. My doctor didn't tell me anything about it however, just that I should look it up on the internet. So here I am 20 years old trying to research a disease I have with no help, guide, or answers. I still get sick at least 3 times a week. I have a little bit of blood in my stools just about everyday (is that even a sympton cause my doctor said it wasn't??) I try not to eat wheat but it is in everything!!! I think I am going to buy stock in wheat! I live off of fruit, veggies, cottage cheese, rice crackers, and peanut butter. LOL and am sick of the diet. Anyways I just need advice, I am all on my own on this one and frankly I am tired. Feels like I am heading down a dead end and I can't turn back so I just keep walking forward waiting for the end. Please any advice will do. Thank you for your time.

Well this site will help you out with information. Alot of people on here are well informed even more so then most doctors.

It sounds to me you still have gluten in the diet. We can have a lot of good things. There are some safe brands such as Kraft(the rest of the companies are in many threads but if you can't find them let me know) that will not hide anything. They will clearly list on the label wheat, rye, barley, oats on the label if it contains any.

You also have to check for gluten in products like makeups/shampoos/soaps/etc. Anything that has any kind of chance to getting into your mouth in any way.

There are over 200 symptoms with celiac and some people do not get symptoms so it's hard to tell from that alone. Celiac can cause chaos anywhere in the body so what could have happened is it may have caused another problem but it may improve with the diet. Definitely not something to ignore though.

And it was probably not a bug you had but the symptoms of celiac..they can make it feel like it is the flu.

You can find out about the best products to try on here and I'm sure you will start feeling better when you get all of gluten eliminated for a while..it does not take overnight to heal all that damage though.

Have you taken a look at the safe and forbidden lists for celiac? Here is the link if you have not found it: https://www.celiac.com/st_main.html?p_catid=12

Good luck and hang in there :D

P.S-have you been diagnosed yet? or are they testing?

Is your doctor treating you for the blood in the stools - that is not typically a symptom of celiac. What else have they tested you for? You may very well have celiac, but other things need to be ruled out too. Blood in stools can be very serious. Is this a gastroenterologist you are seeing? If not, consider asking for a referral to one. I noticed a big difference - now I feel like I have people on my side who know what I am talking about when I go to the doctor.

Hi,  My 7 year daughter has complained of this in the past, which I thought were part of her glutening symptom, but more recently I have come to figure out it's part of her histamine overload symptom. This one symptom was part of her broader profile, which included irritability, extreme hunger, confusion, post-nasal drip. You might want to look up "histamine intolerance". I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
