Hello all,

I'm sure most of you have dealt with this issue but I just wanted some advice/ help.

I've been gluten free for about 3 weeks now. I used to be in a lot of pain before but now the pain has subsided. I am still extremely bloated and feel nauseous often. Fatigue and irritability are a big part of my daily routine. I usually wake up feeling okay (bloating wise too) but as the day progress i feel worse and worse. I'm being extremely careful not to eat anything gluten so I don't understand what the problem is.

Can any of you tell me whats up with that? I don't want to have to go see my doctor again if this is a very common issue and I can manage/ deal with it on my own.

Any help or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

I know it gets easier as time goes on but right now i'm finding it hard to manage, i'm a university student in a foreign country and my whole lifestyle has been turned up side down. :(

Sanaa,

My GI had labs drawn to get a baseline of my health so that we could see any significant changes in the future. They checked my thyroid, iron levels, vitamin D level, and had a bone density scan done (for osteoporosis). All of these areas (and more) can be affected by celiac. My iron and vitamin D levels came back low, so for the past four weeks I have been on three iron pills a day, and a weekly high dose of vitamin D. I will have my levels rechecked again in a few weeks to see if there are improvements. I am still feeling tired and have days that I am so tired my body wants to shut down and I just want to sleep all day, and sometimes I have to.

I know you don't want to go back to the doctor, but I would at least have your iron and vitamin D levels checked. Sometimes it will take a while for your body to recover from all the damage done by celiac. If you haven't already, find a good multivitamin to take.

As far as the bloating goes, there may be something else your body is reacting to, another food that may be causing it. You might want to try an elimination diet to see what happens. Do you drink milk? It is not uncommon for those of us with celiac to have an intolerance for dairy as well.

Good luck!

What ARE you eating? Maybe we can help you figure out if there's some hidden gluten sneaking in. Other possible culprits are vitamin deficincies or additional food intolerances. Dairy and Soy are the most common ones it seems. Lactose intolerance could cause the bloating and pain. Are you eating a lot of cheese or dairy items? Another food intolerance that I think causes bloating is fructous intolerance. Are you eating a lot of fruit? Beyond that you amy not have an additional food intolerance but you may have a damaged gut and difficulty digesting certain things for a whiel. I know for me I could not handle raw veggies, nuts and beans for the first six months. They caused me a lot of pain. Now I've been gltuen free for over a year and I eat those foods all the time.

Cold/flu or gluten poisoning? Hello. I've had another similar episode. I find it very difficult to differentiate between the symptoms of a cold or flu and those caused by gluten poisoning. In fact, I don't know if my current worsening is due to having eaten something that disagreed with me or if the cold I have has caused my body, which is hypersensitive, to produce symptoms similar to those of gluten poisoning.

I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I got my liver test last month and it was in normal range. Two years ago I did have a vitamin D deficiency but I'm know taking vitamin D3 pills. Last month I got my vitamin D checked and it was in normal range. I don't believe I've had my choline checked. However, I do drink almond milk eat Greek yogurt on a daily basis.

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) can be associated with low ferritin and iron deficiency. Once Celiac Disease (1% of the population affected) has been ruled out by tests the next step is to check for Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (10% of the population affected) by eliminating gluten for a trial period, then re-introduce Gluten Challange. Have you been supplementing Iron? How are your liver enzymes? Low levels of ferritin indicate iron deficiency, while  59% transferrin saturation indicates high iron levels.  Possibly indicating Fatty Liver Disease.  Choline is crucial for liver health, and deficiency is a known trigger for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver.  Some experts say that less than 10% eat the the Food and Nutrition Board established Adequate Intake that are based on the prevention of liver damage. Severe constipation and hemorrhoids may be linked to a bile or choline deficiency.  "Ninety-five percent of phospholipids (PLs) in bile is secreted as phosphatidylcholine or lecithin."  Fatty acid composition of phospholipids in bile in man   Deficiency of these bile salts causes the bile to get thick. Some people with Celiac Disease are misdiagnosed with Gall Bladder bile issues.  Removal of the gallbladder provides only temporary relief. Whether or not celiac disease or NCGS are your issues you need to look at your vitamin D blood level.

      Thanks for your input.

If you have hemorrhoids 1x weekly I don't see how you have time to heal from one episode before you experience another one, unless each one is a very minor event. Have you consulted a physician about your hemorrhoid issue? It's not normal to be having an episode every week unless it is really one episode that is not completely healing between weekly flareups.
