I posted last week all upset about the white blood cells...Well the nurse called today to tell me his results were GREAT...she said before he went gluten-free it was at 165...Not sure what was but whatever it is they tested...Dont remember the name...Well this time they were at 17...WOW that is alot lower...I asked her b/c she is alot nicer about the white blood cells and she said it could be a sign of infection and he just wants me to keep an eye on him....He does have to go back in a month instead of 3 months b/c of his white blood cells and he wants to recheck and see if the 17 is any lower within a month....

I did talk to his allergiest Wednesday because he has been really congested...He takes a breathing treatment 2 times a day of Pulmocort...Well lately he has been waking up in the morning and coughing and grabbing his head saying I need to lay down it hurts....I wonder if it isnt something with his sinuses....I tell you I got this wheat stuff down and under control now only if they could make him NOT CONGESTED.....Poor child has had something since birth...Finally am making headway with it all...

Yall keep us in your prayers...We are going to Florida next week and I am really nervous b/c of the food.....Scared I am going to run out of something I guess....I think I have my whole freezer going with us...LOL

Have a wonderful week everyone...

I don't come here often so I don't know your whole history, but have you tried taking him off of dairy? My DH was continuously congested and had a runny nose for YEARS until we learned that our older DD is allergic to dairy, the whole house went dairy free and voila! DH's nose stopped running immediately.

Good luck with the traveling, I know how nerve racking it is!

have you tried an allergy test (blood, not skin patch) or an elimination diet? My son is allergic to soy (even in minute amounts) and gets very congested. Last winter we rubbed Vicks vap-o-rub on him every night at bed, until we found the vitamin E in a lip balm he was using (because his lips were dry from so much mouth-breathing) was soy. Btw, my ds is 3 yrs old.

Thank you both for the recommendations about the dairy...We are scheduled to go Wednesday to the allergiest...Jacob keeps grabbing his head and they want to look at his sinues....I am going to mention all of this to them...If I dont get there then I will try the elimination process....THANKS AGAIN...

We just got in from vacation tonight and we overall had a wonderful time. The food situation was harder than I thought...I had a ton of snacks with us that he could have and take to the pool...But hubby and other son Peyton of course wanted to go out for lunch and dinner...so after leaving the first resturant we decided it was better to pull up at the door and let me go in and check the menu out...LOL I know you still have a problem of cross but at least if I know they have a hot dog or grilled chicken or veggies I am sorta OK.....Funniest thing thou is I called Fudpuckers and asked do you have a hot dog...Yeah they do...Okay good...we get in there sit down and older son Peyton says look mom....THEY COOK IN PEANUT OIL....He is allergic to NUTS...he said I thought you called...I said I did but for Jacob...Thanks alot mom is what I got...

For the most part places are really good but I got upset at one...I wont name names :) I asked if they had a grilled chicken breast and the comment was...Yes but I will have to charge you full price...I said FINE if it cost 25.00 I will pay for it that is what he has to have b/c he cant have anything with wheat...I said okay I would like a baked potato instead of fries....well we will have to charge you 1.50 to substitue.....WE finally left but it made me mad...I told the girl...If I have to pay 5.00 for the tater I will...That is what he has to have....I know that most kids menu's dont consist of grilled chicken with side salads....then you get people starring and they say Oh your baby eats so good...LOL I just love it....

Well have a wonderful weekend.....

Hope you get some answers soon.......it seems like it's always something doesn't it? Glad to hear you had a good vacation! We haven't eaten out very much, but the few times we did, we've had pretty good experiences. We ate at Steak and Shake the other day for the first time. On their door, they had an allergy label in big, bold letters. SO, I assumed they'd be pretty savvy about no wheat and such. But, the poor teenage waitress had a hard time grasping the questions we were asking. Turns out the fries were cooked in the same oil as other fried foods, so we were dissapointed. We just ordered a plain hamburger patty for Emmie. The waitress totally surprised us though when she brought our oder. She said the cook didn't read her instructions, and had just removed the bun from the burger, but she was having them cook up another one for us. I was so thankful that this girl took our request seriously, not all teenagers would do that.

Although, I think I'm just going to go back to bringing Em's food if we ever eat out again, and just order her a Sprite. That's all she ever really cares about anyway, getting to splurge on a soda!

My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.

Are Bobresmill gluten free oats ok for sensitive celiacs?

thank you both for the insights. i agree, im going to back off on dairy and try sucraid. thanks for the tip about protein powder, i will look for whey protein powder/drinks!   i don’t understand why my doctor refused to order it either. so i’ve decided i’m not going to her again, and i’m going to get a second opinion with a GI recommended to me by someone with celiac. unfortunately my first appointment isn’t until February 17th. do you think i should go gluten free now or wait until after i meet with the new doctor? i’m torn about what i should do, i dont know if she is going to want to repeat the endoscopy, and i know ill have to be eating gluten to have a positive biopsy. i could always do the gluten challenge on the other hand if she does want to repeat the biopsy.    thanks again, i appreciate the support here. i’ve learned a lot from these boards. i dont know anyone in real life with celiac.
