I posted this in another area but thought I'd post it here also. Yesterday we found out that my son has 2 copies of the DQ8 gene. So I believe that means my husband and I each have at least a DQ8 gene. So then that would mean 1 of my parents has the gene and 1 of my 4 grandparents carries the gene. Is that correct? One of my grandmas has experienced a number of symptoms...diarrhea (which she claims is managed on meds), lactose intolerance, depression that hasn't been well-managed, weight loss at times and possible osteoperosis. I wonder if she could have the gene and have celiac but never knew.

Not quite. You have no way of knowing how many DQ8 genes are in your family. Both your parents and all of your grandparents could have any number of DQ8 genes. All you can say for sure is that at least one of your grandparents and at least one of your parents has at least one copy of DQ8. Boy, that's a lot of "at leasts".

So yes, your grandmother's trouble could have been celiac or gluten intolerance.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
