Hi,

When I was scheduled for my endoscopy/colonoscopy I was suppossed to drink Fleet soda beforehand. At the time I wasn't worried about celiac disease because my blood test had come back neg. I was gluten-free at the time but my docs told me I didnt have to be eating gluten & I believed them. Anyways I bought the wrong stuff and ended up drinking Magnesium Citrate. I only had 2 spoonfuls but in less than 10 minutes I was having a crying spell and a bad reaction. I refused to drink the rest so my test was cancelled. I thought for sure I had Candida and the sucrose had "fed" the yeast causing me to be sick. Now that I'm wondering about celiac disease again I'm curious because the main ingredient was Citric Acid and I'm reading conflicting info. as to whether this is ok for people with celiac disease or not. My reaction to that stuff is partly why I stopped thinking I might have celiac disease because I didn't think it contained gluten at all. Am I wrong?

In the US Citric Acid is ok from a gluten standpoint. Some people have reacted to Citric Acid though so you may be sensitive to that.

Unfortunatley citric acid can be a gluten source if produced outside the U.S. It shocked me when I read it. I couldn't believe that something I thought came from citris could actually be made from wheat. Contact the manufacturer. Also since you are sensitive to chemicals, did it have aspertame in it? It bothers me, so I never drink diet.

A saying many of us live by...Never paranoid, always careful!! :)

      This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

      I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?

      Welcome to the forum, @Mmoc! Please include the reference ranges for the IGA and the TTG tests in your next post if you have access to them. We cannot comment much otherwise as different labs use different reference ranges for these tests and also different units of measurement. There are no universal standards as of yet so the raw test numbers are not always helpful. Having said that, if your IGA (what we usually call "total IGA") is low, the TTG-IGA score will be skewed and cannot be trusted. Other kinds of tests for celiac disease would need to be run, particularly those in the IGG family of tests. Perhaps this will be helpful:
