I got the following email today:

Thank you for your email concerning our Alexia Julienne Sweet Potato Fries. Thank you for your interest in Alexia Foods.

With exception to Alexia Potato Bites, we are pleased to tell you that our potato products do not contain gluten. However, due to an expansion in our production, we now employ a facility where products containing wheat are also produced. While our products are produced on dedicated lines, our packaging will carry the following advisory:

Produced in a facility that may manufacture other items containing wheat.

Understanding the concerns that many gluten sensitive consumers have with cross-contamination, great precautions are taken to effectively clean the equipment in between production runs in accordance with organic and kosher guidelines. We cannot, however, guarantee that there will not be trace cross-contamination.

As products are produced in the new facility the Gluten Free statement on the package will be removed. If you find any packages that have the Gluten Free statement, they were produced at the time the facility was indeed gluten free.

I hope that this information is helpful to you in determining whether or not our products are appropriate for your needs.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Nancy

This information was very helpful to me, thank you. Now I don't feel like I'm going crazy. There are times when I would eat these fries and have no reaction and other times I would. For me, when I eat anything with wheat/ gluten in it I break out all over with a horrible rash. I guess I will just have to make my own sweet potato fries from now on. I am just not willing to take a chance on them anymore.

Welcome to the forum. The only frozen sweet potato fries I've bought are Ore-Ida and the last time I bought them they were marked gluten-free. Open Original Shared Link

I just purchased the Spicy Sweet Potato Fries and assumed (based on the ingredients on the label) that I would be okay to eat them. The package did NOT sy anywhere that they were gluten-free, but took a gamble. I think that may have been a mistake. I had a bad tummy last night and this morning many trips to the toilet (you all know why, no need to elaborate but it wasn't pretty). Guess I won't be finishing this product. Too bad. They were pretty tasty!

Guess I'll have to find another product to try.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
