Ok so it's been like two weeks of being more vigilant about what I'm eating. I have been gluten-free for 2 years but by my own admission I haven't taken it seriously. Didn't ask enough questions at restaurants and the like. So I was starting to feel ok and last night got take out from a place I trust and knows about gluten. I again am miserable today. I feel like I am a mess. What should I do?? Am I reacting to a cc or is it a new sensitivity or is my system still out of whack? My doc is out of town, and I'm overdue to again check my vitamin levels and thyroid. he will be out again next week. So would have to wait another 10 days for a md appointment. What do I take my diet down to to feel better?

Sometimes you have to take it down to fresh meats, fruits, veggies, no grains.

And don't eat out.

Try digestive enzymes and probiotics - I think you already do that?

Honestly, if your vitamin levels and/or thyroid is off you may be fighting a losing battle til you get them sorted.

Keep a food diary - what, when, how much. It's probably just the healing process, but may be another food. If you're still on milk you may consider dropping it and see if it helps.

Yep on probiotics and digestive enzymes. I don't eat much dairy. Never have. Cheese and mostly hard cheeses at that. I can try just meat, fruit and veggies. No grains will not be easy, gluten-free toast and peanut butter is the only breakfast that sits well but I could nix the grains for a while too if that would help. I haven't even eaten today cause I feel so crappy. Unlike a lot of people I got diagnosed very weirdly. I haven't gotten a biopsy to confirm or even a gi doc anymore. My gi did nothing including not testing me. Thought from my endoscopy that I had bad h pylori infection. I did have flattened villi but attributed it to infection. Then I saw a naturopath who was an idiot but tested me. Results were pos but at the time he said they weren't for whatever reason. It wasn't until a year and a half later that my primary doc had requested the results from the naturopath that I knew for sure by then I had self diagnosed and was off (that's what prompted my doc to get the records) gluten and didn't want further testing cause I would have had to go back on gluten. So have been doing vitamin levels and not much else. I don't know whether to just take my diet down to basics and get levels tested in 10 days or to ask to do more. My guess is I am just getting more sensitive. Where I could maybe handle small amounts of cc now I can't at all. But you are right if my vit levels are off again I am fighting an up hill battle. How long would you suggest dairy and grain free??

I'd do it til you were sure you saw results or knew that wasn't it. I think most say one month at least.

I know. Breakfast sucks when you change it. I vacillate between eggs w veggies and eggs as a sandwich.

You could try making nut bread. Try Elana's pantry site for almond bread recipes.

It does sound like you might have gotten glutened. Many times we do become more sensitive as time goes on. Avoiding restaurants for a bit would be a good idea. Be easy on your tummy for bit. How have you been feeling before this hit? If you had been feeling pretty good then I would go simply go with as much unprocessed food as you can for a bit. If the toast and pnut butter hasn't been giving you problems then I would go ahead and keep it in. You could have another intolerance, soy and dairy are the most common so if you aren't feeling better in a couple of days then do go ahead and drop those for a bit. If things clear up off of gluten, soy and dairy then you could add the dairy and soy back in one at a time a week apart and see if you are reacting to either of them.

I was starting to bounce back but then wham. I'm wondering if it's dairy. I will just eat whole foods no grain or dairy for at least a few days. Then try the bread again and see. Dairy intolerance is big in my family so.....

      I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

      I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

      It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.
