Celiac And Stress

In 1988 I began to have many strange things happen. These included, panic attacks, feelings of un-reality, poor sleeping, weight loss, not wanting to do anything, lack of interest, bad temper, timidity, intolerance, classic migraine, intolerance of tomatos coffee, cheese and weetabix/readybreck, fear of strange places, lack of sex drive, ..and more

I was in constant contact with my doctor who put it all down to Hypertension. But, on examination at the hospital after a severe panic attack, I was told that I did not suffer from hypertension. But, as my heart rate was very rapid, I was kept in for 8 hours while I was monitored. I was sent home when my bp reached normal.

The symptoms continued for years with little or no answers from either the hospitals or my doctor and I began to totally depressed. Then in 2007 my doctor sent me for a prostrate exam which showed that although it was slightly restricting urination, it was fine.

In 2011 I was sent for blood tests after suffering with constapation followed by the runs. I received a call from my doctor telling me that one of the bloods showed a likelihood of bowel cancer and I was put on an urgent note to have a colonoscopy. Two small polops were found but turned out to be nothing. Then, two weeks ago I had to go and give more bloods at the bowel unit. This time I was told that all my symptoms indicated the high possibility that I had celiac. I was told that I had to have a camera down my throat to confirm this, but I cant due to suffering from coad. So now what ? Can I just go on a gluten free diet and if I get better fine..if not ?

Are the above symptoms celiac related ? The panic attacks, total lack of sex drive..and painful ejeculation when I try, intolerance, constapartion, weight loss etc ? If so, how is it that I have had all this for so long. Surely if I had celiac and left it this long I would have died from malnutricion by now.

kareng Grand Master

It is possible you have Celiac and something else going on, too. I'm not familiar with "coad".. If that's is serious enough that you can't have an endoscopy or a pill cam, maybe that's causing your issues? Did they do Celiac blood tests?

Hopefully, you are getting some tests on your prostate? 5 years ago you had a small problem! Hopefully, you are getting follow- up to make sure it isn't worse?

Hi Mike,

I am new to the forum but just wanted say that your symptoms are very similar to the ones I had. I am a "non celiac gluten intolerant" (blood work negative, no biopsy done) and had been suffering from the symptoms you mention for about 10 years until I reached the bottom and started a gluten and dairy free diet about two years ago. I also have an intolerance to histamine containing foods (tomatoes, coffee, cheese, wine, chocolate..). They make me feel a little disconnected from reality, like I am about to faint. Although that intolerance got better after being gluten/dairy free and I don't really have to worry about it now.

My Intolerances were diagnosed with a food intolerance test as well as a peptide test, and confirmed by the eviction diet. Dairy is known to trigger anxiety issues - among other things - in many people. So you might want to try being dairy free too and see how you feel. However, make sure you go through all the necessary tests before you start removing gluten or dairy . Once you are on a gluten and/or dairy free diet you will react much stronger when you eat it. And the tests require you to eat gluten for a period of time before testing.

I hope you figure it all out and get better.

This doctor is obviously under educated about Celiac Disease. Deficiencies that can cause oral thrush (Candidiasis) mouth ulcers: Thiamine B1 B12 Folate Zinc Vitamin C B2 B6 Iron Malabsorption Syndrome is often co-morbid with Celiac Disease causing multiple deficiencies of the essential vitamins and minerals.  Low or deficient  Vitamin D is almost always found in undiagnosed Celiac Disease. "Over 900 genes have been reported as regulated by vitamin D"  Possible Role of Vitamin D in Celiac Disease Onset  "The overall prevalence rate of vitamin D deficiency was 41.6%, with the highest rate seen in blacks (82.1%), followed by Hispanics (69.2%)."    Prevalence and correlates of vitamin D deficiency in US adults

I saw the thing for testing for gluten when at public places.I absolutely love but I wonder if they would come up with a bracelet or necklace that can detect gluten in the air.I would LOVE that, i know i get debilitating migraine from smelling gluten wheat what have you, all I know is when I go into places like Chevron- gluten Subway, migraine, Costco that food smell of nasty gluten- migraine and same with Walmart subway.I absolutely HATE im that sensitive, my body reacts.Sadly medical hasn't taken core issue of celiac being an issue considering glutenfree ever since 1994 and in their eyes not because they didn't diagnose me. I am and wish I wasn't. If there was a detector of gluten in the air it would make a world of difference.

Oops! @Staticgypsy, I’ll get the book! Thank you!

Thank you so much for your help, @trents and @Staticgypsy! I so appreciate your thoughts. My diet is high in foods with oxalates and I don’t notice any issues there. If eliminating gluten from my diet had changed anything I’d be happy to just keep on the gluten-free diet, but with eating gluten several times with no rash, and having a rash when I was many years into gluten-free eating (and was much more careful at that point), I’m just baffled. Many, many thanks to you both.
