Pamela's Chocolate Cake Mix

So I was so excited to find that Pamela's Chocolate Cake Mix was also soy free. Their brownie's are good but have soy. The label on the cake reads soy free and the rep I called on the phone says it's soy free.

BUT my son has had a horrible soy reaction to something and this product is the only new thing in his diet this week. I am so frustrated - I can't find anything else it would be, and am discovering that a 3 1/2 yr old rampaging with soy in his body does far more damage than a baby or toddler......(sigh)

Has anyone with celiac and a soy allergy had a problem with this product? I think it might be a newish product.

I suspect Pamela's because their brownie mix did not use to have soy listed, my son had had some reactions but we were still figuring products out then, and then - poof- one day someone had stickered over all the brownie product labels with new ingredient ones that included soy! When I called the company, they said they had made a mistake and not listed that their chocolate had soy in it for a while. If this is the case again, I will no longer buy Pamela's products. I am sooooo frustrated....The cake made me sick too, but I only ate it once, ds has eaten it 3 days in a row now and is not his normal balanced self. grrrrrr....

Merika,

I really hate to hear this happened. I hope the two of you start feeling better soon. I haven't tried the mix yet but I read the lable in the store yesterday. I had also seen the sticker lables on the brownie mix. :o That's such a shame because I find her products to be very good. If I end up trying the mix and I'll let you know how it goes. Right now we're under the weather so I didn't want to add something new to the mix.

Take Care! :)

Kasey's mom,

I was hoping you would write in :) Cause I know you're facing the same gluten-free soy-free thing we are. Please let me know if you try it what your experiences with it are!!! My ds LOVED them and (picky eater that he is) exclaimed they were "the goodest thing ever" :P And woke up talking about them the next day, and asked to have them at his next birthday party (in February, lol). So I am seriously bummed.

I have read the ingredients over and over again to see if it's anything else in their that disturbed his and my digestion. The only untested item was chicory, but that is in the artichoke family and ds eats those all the time. Everything else we eat pretty often. I am flummoxed....

Merika,

I know it stinks when you find something they love and then can't use it. Seems like I have to do the same thing quite often. Maybe you'll figure things out before his birthday.

I tried to do a little research on chicory. Because chicory is a fiber, it can have a laxitative effect. I have also seen a few documented cases of allergic reactions from chicory root. I use a blend of stevia & FOS (derived from chicory) and I think the the FOS is very helpful in supporting Probiotics. I haven't used chicory in cooking but it might take time for the body to get adjusted to the amount of fiber in it. I hope you to don't have an allergy to chicory as well. :(

I'll let you know how the mix goes...we have an grand-parent birthday at the end of the month!! :)

Ooh, I hope you have better luck than us :) Let me know what you make and how it goes!!!

Hello, I was very stick,  with flu like symptoms, but my virus panel came back negative and we couldn’t figure out what’s going on. The doctor then added a celiac panel.  Has anyone ever had such a dramatic change?  What are the odds this is true celiac I am going to have an endoscopy, but it’s expensive and I just feel like why can’t the labs be enough?

Eating out in general is full of risks, but this article may help:

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?
