Hey ya'll,

I need some opinions from women with expertise :)

I'm having this "morning sickness" all day! I love being pregnant, but I need to eat! I haven't actually vomited yet, but I have "hugged the porcelin throne" (almost wishing I would puke) on more than one occasion...sorry, TMI.

Does anybody know of a good gluten-free anti-nausea med that you were able to use during pregnancy?

As always,

thank you bunches! -Julie

Julie,

I remember how crummy that feeling is..... :P I was not gluten-free at the time but I took Emetrol (over the counter.) I've also taken Little Tummys, Nausea Relief. You might want to check on these. I'm not sure if either are gluten-free.

I really like ginger tea for nausea. I love Alvita Ginger Root because it dosen't have any additional ingredients. When I've been glutened it helps so much. I called Alvita a couple of days ago and they confirmed their teas are gluten-free. I also remember seeing ginger lollipops for pregnancy but I'm not sure if these are gluten-free.

I almost forgot....It really helped me to chew gum. I'm not sure why but someone recommended I try it. I think there's a recent post about gluten-free gums.

How far a long are you? I really hope this passes for you. I was very fortunate that my nausea ended after the first trimester. :)

I hope you feel better soon!

Thank you for all of the info.! Believe me, it will be used! ;)

Actually, I'm at the end of month 2... (Just starting week 8).

I've got my fingers crossed that this nausea will let up in the next five weeks or so.

Until then...I'm taking advice from Moms with experience who can give this novice some words of wisdom! :)

Thanks for sharing!

Ginger can be useful for this - even in pregnancy. They did a couple studies on this a little while back, and found that while it wasn't a magic cure-all, it was more effective than a placebo, well tolerated, and safe. You can get it whole (grate the ginger and eat it! whew!), make tea with it (either buy prebagged, or grate fresh into hot water, pills (I think I've seen these), gingered, or in hard candy. (Tea, with honey, is my favorite method to get ginger.)

Thanks Tiffany for the info.! :) This may be a stupid question, but can I buy ginger tea at the regular grocery store? (I'm not familiar with drinking it)

Thanks for your feedback! ;) -Julie

I get the Alvita brand at my health food store. I also order the tea form an online vitamin company. I've also used LongLife tea but their ginger variety is a blend of different herbs. Your best bet would be to use the ginger by itself or a tea like Alvita Ginger Root. That way your not drinking other herbs that my be questionable during pregnancy.

I have a cup that's brewing right now...I think I've been glutend and the tea helps so much. I often drink the tea in the evening to help soothe my tummy to fall asleep.

I also find that a ginger bath is very relaxing. After a squeze my tea bag I'll throw it in the tub or grate some fresh ginger. :)

Have you tried those wrist bands yet I was telling you about??? Like you, I had tons of nausea but very little throwing up. The wrist bands too the edge off enough that I could function in my day-to-day life and even work. I wore them for weeks with each pregnancy. I am concerned about self-medicating during pregnanacy. I know ginger-tea is ok, but a lot of herbal remedies are not ok for pregnant woman. If you feel too horrible, you can ask for dr for Diclectin, but that is a drug that is usually only give if there is a lot of vomiting going on too.

I know how you feel! ((hugs))

Ginger tea (from fresh ginger, yummmm) is good and also safe during pregnancy. I found acupuncture helped a lot too - especially the first trimester.

Depends on your grocery store. ;-) I've seen it in some, but not others. But I've hardly ever seen a grocery store without fresh ginger. All you have to do is cut off about a half inch section and , with a knife, cut off the brown, papery skin. Slice it as thinnly as you can, and drop in a cup of hot water. Let it sit for 10 minutes or so, then add honey/agave/sugar to taste. (and lemon juice or lime juice if you like... makes a tasty, tangy "lemonade" beverage. you could make some of this up and refrigerate in a pitcher to have it on hand.)

Depending on the store, you may be able to find ginger juice (from The Ginger People), which is just well crushed ginger and even more convenient than fresh, without being dried, for cooking and making tea (or the "ginger lemonade").

Tiffany just reminded me...I've made homemade ginger ale that is really good.

Homemade Ginger Ale

Yield: 4 servings

2 TBS. Fresh ginger root, grated

2 Lemon rinds

4 TBS. Honey, or any sweetener of your choice

1 c water

Bring 1 cup water to boil. Put the ginger and lemon rinds and honey in the pan with the water. Let steep for five minutes.

Strain and chill. When ready to serve, add sparkling water.

**I like to keep the ginger syrup in my refrig. and I can make "soda" anytime I want. :)

Looks like I'm going shopping ladies!

If I can't find the ginger tea pre-made, it sounds easy enough to do myself "from scratch" :)

I'm also going to try that wrist band thingy if I can find it...

Wish me luck ladies! I have an Ultrasound in 30 minutes. So, I'm off....

My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.

Are Bobresmill gluten free oats ok for sensitive celiacs?

thank you both for the insights. i agree, im going to back off on dairy and try sucraid. thanks for the tip about protein powder, i will look for whey protein powder/drinks!   i don’t understand why my doctor refused to order it either. so i’ve decided i’m not going to her again, and i’m going to get a second opinion with a GI recommended to me by someone with celiac. unfortunately my first appointment isn’t until February 17th. do you think i should go gluten free now or wait until after i meet with the new doctor? i’m torn about what i should do, i dont know if she is going to want to repeat the endoscopy, and i know ill have to be eating gluten to have a positive biopsy. i could always do the gluten challenge on the other hand if she does want to repeat the biopsy.    thanks again, i appreciate the support here. i’ve learned a lot from these boards. i dont know anyone in real life with celiac.
