lmvrbaby's Achievements

  1. Hi, I have been gluten free in January 06, and I tried the diet thing and lost in the beginning when everyone said oh wow you will lose weight quick being gluten free... NOT, I lost about 20 in the beginning and since have gained back that and then some. I exercise as well and try to eat right, lots of vegies, less chocolate, but it does not help. No idea what to do now. Hope there are some answers from someone.

  2. I usually make foods at home or my husband cooks as I work 4 evenings a week. I am the only one in the house that is gluten free as my hubby and two kids at home are not. If there is something that I can not have that they are having I make myself something I can have. I have been looking for fast pre made items such as soups or microwave dishes, and have come across Thai foods. Not all but a few are and say gluten free on the package and I also check ingredients.

When I go out with friends, one friend in particular, always says we need to go somewhere where "Lisa" can eat at which is nice, as I don't have to sit and watch them or eat just a salad. Those are the kind of friends everyone should have.

The more people who know of Celiac or gluten free the more ask if anyone has allergies and such before a group of us go out to eat. Nothing like going out with friends to enjoy yourself and not being able to have input on where you go. Everyone should be able to enjoy themselves and not a select few.

So I go out when possible, between being able to afford it, work and schedules.

  3. Hi BakingBarb,

I also bake alot or use to not as much since going gluten free and now actually getting back into it. I went looking for a book that I would use to make those all time favorites it is called Baking classics by Annalise Roberts. It has all the recipes I use to make and flour mixes you can make up for later baking. It does cost more to buy the flours and such but if it what you love to do and helps you feel better it is worth every penny. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

  4. I just looked up the swedish apple pie and it looks really easy. Would white rice flour do? I dont think we have Bette Hagman's brand here, at least I haven't seen it. I love apple pie and tried the perfect pie crust and I too had to scrap it off the counter. After all said and done it wasn't bad. Before going gluten free, I was a Mrs. Smith's pie person, buy it, bake it, eat it. So thank you for any and all tips.

  5. Hi and welcome. I have been gluten free not quite 2 years now. I have days when I still get something that I shouldn't but that will happen. I have 4 boys, three of which has been tested and the oldest is the only one who has celiac and he is also diabetic. There are many people on here that will answer questions or help in any way, so just ask. I have found lots of comfort on here as I have no one else in the area to share this with other than my son. He is now 21 and lives with his girlfriend and daughter and does what he wants, mom just isn't in that equasion. So I hope you find answers to any questions and that your gluten free experience only gets better

  6. Hi, sorry to hear about your neice. My oldest son had what they call febrile seizures. He was 13 months old when they started and lasted until about age 3. He was put on phenobarbitol. He had to take this medicaine 2 to 3 times a day every day. Usually tylenol doesnt help except bring the fever down. The phenobarbitol would help aid with the seizure. When he would even get a temp just below 100 he would start with a seizure. It may very well be infection related but I would also try to get a second opinion. In my sons case, as I found out later, I had the same thing at approximately the same age my son was. I had no clue and was trying to get a history on his father as he was not in the picture.

So good luck and see if they can get a second opinion just to be sure. Babies being sick is no fun. I do hope they find out what is wrong and can help her

  7. I too had absolutely no symptoms, not even the D. I ended up with gall bladder problems and through all of that testing I was told I had it from the biopsy that was done. Later I had the blood work done to confirm what the biopsy had shown. Some people have no symptoms until something else happens. I guess it depends on the person. Also no one else in my family has nor heard of Celiac until I was diagnosed. Now 3 of my 4 boys have been tested and only the oldest who is also diabetic has it. So good luck and get the second opinion. Not all doctors are right at first chance.

  8. I have a son (21) that is diabetic, diagnosed close to 5 years now. A normal glucose reading can be anywhere from 80 to 120. Anything above this is when they decide after a number of readings over a period of time if whether or not you are diabetic and if you should be on any medication. A low reading usually means you need to eat something or have juice. My son was first diagnosed with a reading of 618. A year and a half ago after he was moved out and not taking care of himself and not taking his insulin ended up in the ED with a reading of 1661, in ICU for 4 days and a regular room 3 days. We were told another 20 minutes and they would not have been any to save him. Just a couple weeks ago, after running out of meds and again not taking his medications like he should ended back in the ED with a level of 1191. Now, after his first initial diabnosis, (which I have asked before and tried), they are making him go to classes to understand his situation and make sure he follows his diet and takes his meds. In the beginning I was given literature and told to read it and watch the videos. Apparently it was not enough for a teen age boy to understand what could happen. Now this time he knows that his liver and kidneys are affected every time his level goes high. It doesn't have to get that high to affect it. He has a 4 year old daughter that I have been trying to make sure he is around for when she starts dating and gets married and such.

Your level sounds fine. You can always ask you doctor for the normal readings and what your numbers mean as far as normal. Now a days asking the doctor is the best way to know what is going on and for people to understand. I hope this helps.

  9. Hi All,

I had this done just about 14 years ago. Done laparoscopy and had no problems. This would be something different for every one that has it done. I had it done as I had 4 boys and did not want any more children. Others have it done for various reasons. The only way to go about it is talk it over with your family and spouse and do what you think is right. Good luck in whatever your decision is.

  10. I just want to add that anyone that does have a Wegmans to shop at, that online under www.wegmans.com you can find the store list of Wegman brand foods lists that have their products that are gluten free. I have printed it and it is 29 pages long. Also their food products also have a label guide on the front of those products for lactose intolerant, gluten free, healthy heart, etc. This was helpful to me in the beginning when I was learning how to shop for food for myself. I hope others find this helpful as well. But always check labels as a precaution.

  11. Hi, I have been gluten free since Feb 06 and had no problem with dairy until this past Spring. I also had cut back and after a year of gluten free the dairy started to affect me. I asked my doctor about it and he said to switch to rice milk. It is more expensive but what isn't on the gluten free diet. It helped. He also said I could try the lactose tablets that are suppose to help when you digest dairy and they do not help at all, at least for me. I love cheese so this kind of is a problem. I had cut dairy out completely for the past 3 or 4 months and tried again only to get the bloating and gas and cramps.

Maybe someone else out there has some suggestions. The rice milk isn't all that bad. Good luck.

  12. I have tried the AMy's products and they are quite good. As far as ice cream we dont have BLue Bell here, but many of the ice cream products where I shop has it listed on the package. With being Celiac I have learned to read and reread labels, just incase something changes. Good luck in finding out about Blue Bell. THere should be a phone number on the carton or an address and a lot of people have tried calling or writing to the company and ask them questions. MOst of the time this is quite helpful.

  13. Hi Phyllis,

I had this done the same way March of 2006. I went in that morning at 6am, surgery at 7:45, about 45 minutes ot an hour, recovery about an 30 to 60 minutes then a room til I could eat and drink without feeling nauseous. Pain was minimal. Where they went in was the belly button area and three other small areas just below middle part of rib cage and then about 2 inches toward the right side and then another 2 inches. I was up and around doing whatever. They say to just rest but I am active and not good at staying still. They usually give you pain meds to take. I just had back surgery 5 weeks ago now and the same thing, stay down, don't do anything. That doesn't work and I told the doctor that. I walk and do what I can with the restrictions I have. I do push to the limit, but always have. If you have any more questions just ask, send email or pm me. I will be more than happy to answers your questions the best I can for you.

    :)

  14. Hi all,

Prior to my diagnosis of celiac going on two years, I was quite anemiac for years. Had all different kind of tests, the iron tabs which they said were the best, yeah right. I even had a hysteroscopy and an exploritory to which the doctor then said well you have endometreosis. I do not have this doc anymore. So I was then placed on the pill continually which was new way back then. My energy came back some, not as much blood loss and still had symptoms at times. After having my gall bladder out and having several more tests, one of which was a biopsy and blood tests for celiac, I was told by a different doctor that I did not have endometreosis and so on and so forth. Life is just full of doctors that know all, huh? Even after those tests and being told you will dramatically impove health wise, which I still havent, I now am taking vit b12 shots. They say usually the elderly get these and even though my kids will say I am elderly, I am not quite 40 (kids are cute aren't they) and have since found this runs in the family (celiac and hereditary) as well. So if you can get you doc to check for vit b12 this may help with the energy level. It has some for me, still trying to keep active without wanting to take a nap all day long.

    Good luck.

  15. I believe in the upper right hand corner of the box you read there is an options togggle bar. Not sure if this is your problem but you may have to reset it to standard or something like that. I saw this a few weeks ago when someone else had a similar problem. Hope tis helps. I am fairly new to this as well and have learned a lot just from reading. Others will come along and read that know exactly what is wrong and can walk you through it step for step.

  16. I had migraines for several years, almost to the point I was going to take shots for. I have found that with no symptoms at all for me prior to diagnosis of Celiac, or gall bladder disease, that my gall bladder was only functioning at like 12.8% out of 100%. Which is not good. WIth all the reading I did online, about gall bladder disease and Celiac, that migraines can be caused by your gall bladder not functioning properly. Mine has been removed well over a year now and I have not had a migraine since. I was getting them a few times a month since I was a teenager. Nice not to have that, but the gall bladder coming out restricts some foods I like to eat.

  17. I have noticed on certain days that my face especially on the nose that my face is red. I thought wow I didn't think I was out in the sun that much today. Just like today, it was more cloudy than sunshine and when I was giving my gran daughter a bath I noticed in the mirror that my nose was red. I have noticed it more since going gluten free, but never put the two together. Now it makes me think. I will have to add it to a list of questions for the doctor.

  18. Well I hate to say it but some families are like that. I have a few family memebers that insist that I eat what they eat. I explain many times and then if they don't understand, I try to print off a blurb of Celiac and hand it to them. Others will go out of their way to make sure there is something there for me to eat. I can't believe it when they do it. So tell Alex not to get down. Brothers will be brothers. They will learn and if she wants to she can try to educate them. Tell her to take it slow. There will be other get togethers. Even if you both have to invite family over and make food you know she can eat. It will work out eventually. Hope Alex feels better.

  19. Hi all, I make a banana bread with or without nuts here is the recipe.

    1 stick butter

    3 large bananas

    2 c white rice flour

    1 c sugar

    1 c nuts (optional)

    2 eggs

    1 3/4 t baking powder

    1/4 t baking soda

    1 t vanilla

I use mini loaf pans and I am the only one in the house gluten-free. I have had the kids try this brad and they don't know if it is gluten-free or just regular. I make a double batch and freeze the everything but what I will use for a couple of days. It is nothing to take out mini muffins or loaf and warm up in microwave.

I bought the book by Annalise Roberts - Gluten Free Baking Classics. It has breads, muffins, cookies, pies, just about everything and I have not made something yet that I did not like. She also has in this book a couple of different flour mixes. I use a lot just white rice flour, seems to taste better than brown rice. But everyone has different tastes.

Hope this helps and good luck with your son.

  20. I agree with Ravenwoodglass. The thing that I was told was to stop milk cause it damages the villa in the intestines. I went months after gluten free diet and then had problems with milk. I went to rice or soy milk and haven't had those kind of problems. You can try it, not to much different than regular milk. Kind of like trying different breads, you try different kinds til you find the one you like best. Kepp up and maybe when you have health insurance you may have testing done. Just keep trying and I do hope you get better soon. I know how it is being sick and then you r fine for awhile then there is a mistake on a food and then stomach pains.

  21. I have to say thank you Tom for the lists. I checked those over and had gall bladder disease, migraines and PN. During testing for gall bladder disease I was diagnosed with Celiac. Had no other symptoms what so ever. That was after biopsy and comfirmed blood test. Gall bladder out, gluten free diet, and no more migraines, I felt better. Still tired but better. Then a few months later, I started with PN. I have back problems, due to an on the job injury, and that is what is causing this PN. Those sypmtoms I had were all on the probably list.

Now my son was diagnosed with Diabetes type 1 at age 16 and then 4 years later diagnosed with Celiac. He didn't have nor does he still have any symptoms. It is just weird how some can be affected in so many ways and then others may not even know it. I have read several articles that say 1 out of 133 people have this and may not know it. My son and I were on the "May not know it list" til something else was diagnosed.

Just thought I would throw that out there.

  22. My children are older and the one that has celiac, diagnosed last year, has graduated from school, about 3 years ago now. The younger ones are in high school and even now we get letters from the teachers saying if we are sending in a snack for the whole class that it has to be individually wrapped cause there have been too many incidents with "home made" food in the past. I deal with this at work as I do make "home made" foods to bring in and I do have celiac. If it is something I can eat I will let my co-workers know. If not, I usually bring in something for me. But schools now a days are trying, at least here to make it possible for all kids to enjoy a treat. If parents that have kids with such an allergy or any allergy for that matter, then I would myself send in a stash for my child to have, just so I know they are not going to get sick from anything else brought in. I kind of feel this is like asthma, or any medication your child needs at school, you have to supply.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents as well.

  23. HI, I am from Waterloo NY. The west side of Syracuse, south east from Rochester. Like I read in the post before we are all local on here. Glad to meet you. I have run into a few people, no names exchanged only shopping in the Wegmans store that has Celiac. NIce to know someone else in the area. I have talked to the manager of the department in the gracery store and she says there are 9 or 10 families that shop for the gluten free foods in this store alone, so I know they are out there but have not met them personally. Maybe someday. Hope to chat more frequently. :D

  24. Hi, I signed up to do the blog but after going through all the controls of what can be done and so on and so forth, I can't seem to find where I go to actually write in it. I have gone over the pages again but I get to a page that says lmvrbaby blog but can not write in it. Any help would greatly be appreciated.
