ARCHIVED Encouragement
gfgypsyqueen replied to Nathan's mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm right there with ya! My youngest has Celiac and I think the DH too. It has been such a problem just to get her diagnosis. She is finally growing and doing great. She has allergies to three or four foods that I can pin down and still something else sets her off. I haven't been able to figure out what sets her off. She turns wild, hard to settle, behavior... -
ARCHIVED Outback Steakhouse, Concord, Nh
gfgypsyqueen replied to Mistilyn's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
That's great news. I hope they serve the bread everywhere. My youngest is so hard to control when the bread arrives for the rest of the table, but we can't eat it. -
ARCHIVED Ft. Myers Support Group
gfgypsyqueen replied to twin#1's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I think a support group is over due for this area. I bet Ada's would let you put an add in the paper or hand out flyers on the gluten-free weekend. Regardless, keep me posted on when and where. -
Next time you are stuck at one of those chinese buffets, order a meal of steamed meat and veggies with plain steamed rice - NO SAUCE. I have never been glutened off of this meal. I usually bring any kind of sauce to help - soy, sweet and sour, salad dressing, bbq, I mean anything works to me. Some Chinese buffets have shrimp, crab claws, snow crab legs (steamed...

I think everybody handles this disease differently. I suppose all major disease have their own unique way that it "hits" you. The limitations from this disease are still better than some of the other diseases out there. I agree with the stages of grief comment above. I was thrilled for a Celiac diagnosis originally. I finally had an answer. No more meds and...

Sorry to hear that you are having so many problems right now. Please keep an open mind about getting pregnant. I just hate to hear when a Dr puts a difinative limit on someone's life, especially when you are so young. Unless your uterous has been removed, keep positive. People who have been told they will never have children, have given birth. Keep working...

ARCHIVED Going To An Allergist - Should I Ask For Any Tests?
gfgypsyqueen replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Be very observant about your child before the allergist visit. That way you will be better able to answer the questions. Does she have times when she can't sleep well? Sniffly noses? Difficulty breathing? Take a look at the foods your child eats and if she has anything else going on in her body. Exzema, colic, vomitting, etc. Sometimes they will look at that... -
ARCHIVED Negative Biopsy But Undigested Food In My Stomach....
gfgypsyqueen replied to lovethosecheesesteaks's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You're having the same fun I had when I tried to get a diagnosis - except backwards! First I had the nasty radioactive eggs test. I had two of them. One checked my gallbladder - not functioning. The other was a gastric emptying test - awful eggs!!!! Turns out my stomach does not work either. The problem to be aware of is that they took out my gallbladder... -
I don't know about your Dr. But many of us have hit or miss experiences with doctors in general. To help make your appt a better experience research Celiacs. Have a list of questions. Bring all of your info with you about what is wrong with your child and why you suspect Celiacs. Food & symptom log. Then be open to the Dr ruling out other diseases. I...

ARCHIVED Question About Hair/beauty Products
gfgypsyqueen replied to Dolcenotte's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, I think you'll be happiest in the end if you call about all of the bath and cosmetic products you use. I am sure you could wash your hair differently and ensure that nothing drips on your face, but I would wonder about the residues on your hands. You do "eat" your lipstick, so I think that has to be gluten-free. I would also make sure your toothpaste... -
I always feel that Drs are just like regular people. Some people you just get along with and have an easy friendship and other people drive you crazy from day one. Most people can use any dr and do fine. Celiacs have such specialized needs that I think it is very important to find a Dr who is willing to listen to you, learn about Celiacs, and work to find...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free In Cancun
gfgypsyqueen replied to andfam5's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Many years ago I had a great trip to Cancun and stayed at an all inclusive place. Beautiful area! Had a great time!!! I brought some dry cereal, cookies, crackers, etc. nothing that had to be cooked. Also brought a letter from Dr stating medically necessary diet...You may need to verify the new and improved security and travel rules. Also, call the resort... -
First off, you are new to this, right. The reaction to gluten after you have healed and are 100% gluten-free will be worse than before you were diagnosed. When I first started this diet, and everytime we add a new food allergy to the house, I go through this process. Mark every product that you have verified is gluten-free and whatever else you are...

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Effects
gfgypsyqueen replied to Celia the Celiac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm right there with ya! I was diagnosed in Georgia. It only took 3 or 4 yrs with active problems to by chance get the right dr, and it still took forever to figure out the problem was Celiacs! I have had problems in the past and only figured it out after checking every single item in the house! Cleaners, soaps, lotions, bath stuff, make up, food, drinks... -
I find that Benadryl and Motrin help with some of the symptoms. But there is no way to speed the recovery process along. At least I have not found one yet. If you are new to this, start looking for symptoms and note how long until they go away. At least you will have a better idea of what you are in for next time. Otherwise, buy some comfy fitting decent...

My daughter had a rash that responded to nothing and came and went with no ryhme or reason. The combination of gluten-free & CF made all the difference. She gets a rash from trace amounts of dairy. So maybe that would do the trick? Not sure of the age of your daughter and that might make a difference. But, I have learned to politely go head to head...

ARCHIVED Different Symtoms
gfgypsyqueen replied to jmcbride4291's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Unfortunately this disease has many symptoms. My child and I had very different symptoms. Even our reactions are different. I thnk in the end, do a gluten challenge to test the diet is the only way to really "see" what it does for your child. -
ARCHIVED Milk Question....
gfgypsyqueen replied to karinezoe's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
One of my kids had a dairy allergy from birth. She wouldn't spit up much, but she wouldn't sleep, had rashes, tons of gas, etc. Her stomach sounded like a popcorn popper. We had to use homeopathic drops to help her. (Newton's Indigestion and gas was one of them. I can't remember the other. Sorry. But the gas stuff worked soooo much better than the stuff you... -
ARCHIVED 2 1/2 Year Old - Upcoming Biopsy Questions
gfgypsyqueen replied to texasmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It is really hard dealing with a sick baby or toddler. It is only harder on you when is simple diagnosis is just not available. I hear ya on the lack of sleep My little Silly never slept more than a few hours before going gluten-free/CF. She still has somethign bothering her and we are workign on determining what it is, but overall she is so much better... -
ARCHIVED Food Ideas For Moving
gfgypsyqueen replied to kickboxer's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Have you thought of hotels with stoves, fridges and microwaves? If not, see if you can bring a single portable burner and a frying pan and pot. Or a small forman grill. Plan to have a small cooler in the car near the kids. Then have the big cooler stocked and accessible in the truck. Look into all the portable things. Canned chicken, tuna, veggies, black... -
ARCHIVED 2 1/2 Year Old - Upcoming Biopsy Questions
gfgypsyqueen replied to texasmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I can't tell you how much gluten is needed to see damage, but I would guess a significant amount at every meal for a few months. Since you only have one month, I would guess heavy gluten at every meal is your best bet to attempt to see damage in the biopsy. That being said, listen to the issues with my little one. I have Celiacs. So I know the signs and... -
ARCHIVED Glutened On Multiple Occasions At Pf Chang's
gfgypsyqueen replied to jmreed's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
So sorry to hear your wife is having those problems at PF changs! I love that place. I have had similar "break downs in the process" at other gluten-free menu restaurants. I just had this happen about a month ago and I am still recovering!!! I hate to give up on a restaurant since we have so few good ones to choose from. But in the end, writing corp is the... -
I would recomend the restaurants with gluten-free menus at first. After you get the idea of the diet under control then start checking out how the family's favorite restaurants will incorporate her diet. gluten-free Menus: Caraba's PF Chang's Outback Wendys Moe's Chipoltes (sp?) Red Robin Cheeseburger in paradise Lee Roy Selman's Boston...

ARCHIVED Eating Out With Kids...gluten Foods At The Same Table
gfgypsyqueen replied to stolly's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I guess my family handles thigns differently than some. I have Celiacs. My spouse does not. One kid has severe food allergy. Other kid (3 yr old) has Celiac, dairy allergy, and other allergies being tested. We go through tons of silverware, cutting boards, and plates in the day. When we go out to eat, each person has their own silverware and ONLY that...
