  1. Wow, I didn't know that. I have looked at the label that says contains wheat, but could not find any questionable ingredients on the label. I really appreciate the replies. Gives me some options I haven't thought of!
  2. I am trying to eat more whole, unprocessed foods and am having a horrible time with raw veggies -- very very painful trapped gas that lasts for hours or days. I'm aware that Beano has gluten, Gas-X does absolutely nothing for me and I'm running out of ideas for how to relieve the discomfort. Anyone here have any tips? I have an appointment for a checkup on...
  3. Happy birthday and may God bless you today!

  4. Hi - my 7 year old son and I both have type 1 diabetes as well! Except it's my son who has celiac. I have Hashimoto's and my son has Grave's. I found your profile by accident when I was searching for info on carb-counting gluten free bread. I am finding it pretty difficult. My son and I are both on a pump and use a scale for weighing our food.

  5. I also had a negative blood test and a negative biopsy. However, the gluten-free diet CURED me of years of pain. Since I have a strong family history of celiac (mom and sister have it) and I also have type 1 diabetes and Hashimoto's thyroid, my current doctors all agree that I probably have celiac. The biopsy was done very early on and I just don't think...
  6. We have been to Daluciano's several times now and it is incredible!!! Open Original Shared Link By the way, you NEED reservations there!!! It is a tiny tiny restaurant, maybe would hold 50 people!! They also made a special order birthday cake for my sister -- it was by far the best cake I have EVER had -- with Canneloni filling, buttercream icing, 4 layer...
  7. This is a fascinating thread to me since my mom, myself and my 7 year old son all have type 1 diabetes. My mom, sister and I all have celiac. Son does not yet. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes within 3 months of going gluten free. So, good question, which came first, the diabetes or celiac? For my specific situation, I knew I was at extremely...
  8. Sorry, I can't get the link to work
  9. My 7 year old son and I both have type 1 Diabetes, and I have celiac as well, so I often make gluten-free foods that the whole family eats. My favorite tool in the world is the Salter 1450 Nutriweigh Scale. You weigh your foods, type it in the scale, and out pops the nutritional information for over 1400 foods. You can also add your own foods and recipies...
  10. I have seen Walmart powdered sugar with wheat starch instead of corn starch. That was about a year ago then I quit buying it because of that, so they may have changed it by now...
  11. A carb factor is the percentage in weight (in grams) of a food that contains carbs. For example, a banana's carb factor is 0.20. If the weight of a banana is 100 grams you multiply it by .2 and get 20 grams of carbs. This is a very very accurate weigh to measure how many carbs are in a food and is very widely used in the diabetic community (because we...
  12. My son and I are both type 1 diabetic and I have made a gluten-free Pantry cake mix w/chocolate frosting. Does anyone know if there is a different carb factor for gluten-free Cake versus a nonGF cake. I have a salter scale and can weigh the cake out and it will give me the carbs if it is a nonGF cake. But I'm wondering if gluten-free cake has a different...
  13. Yep, it's there -- Like I said, looks like a hole in the wall. It's in a little strip mall type place on the corner of Dundee and Waukegan road. Here's the link to the store -- but they don't really have much online. Just about the store, no online orders. Open Original Shared Link
  14. I just moved from Michigan to the north suburbs of Chicago. And you have got to go to The Gluten Free Store in Northbrook (807 Waukegan Road, Northbrook, IL) Every single item in the store is gluten free. It looks like a hole in the wall type of place from the outside, but it's awesome!! I love being able to sample cookies there without having to read...
  15. THANK YOU!!! That would explain the D I had yesterday morning after drinking some Bailey's and coffee Tuesday night . That's the ONLY alcohol I drink -- guess I won't be doing that again!! The link to the list is very very helpful. Thanks again.
  16. Just wondering if Irish Bailey's is gluten-free? Alcohol drives me nuts because they don't have to label ingredients!! Of course I know to stay away from malt based beverages... but I sure do love my Bailey's in coffee!!
  17. DH has severe RLS which also affect his hands -- he has hand spasms at night, too. They have just found that his RLS is caused by extremely low ferritin (iron stores) levels. He will also be having tests for Celiac. He's taking high iron doses but it's not helping.
  18. Thanks, when I looked at my bill from when I had the tests, there was only a 10% discount or so. But we have a different insurance company, though. I just wanted to make sure that we wouldn't have to spend $1000 or something for the tests. We will probably have better insurance in January, but I don't want him to wait that long to get the tests done.
  19. DH needs to have a celiac blood panel done -- we have a high deductible on our insurance. How much does the average celiac blood panel test cost? Someone said it's very expensive -- but I looked back at when I had it done several months ago and it was around $225 for IGA, TTG, IGG, and something else. Does that sound right? Expensive, but not too bad...
  20. DH has EXTREMELY low levels of ferritin also. He had his levels tested because he has such severe RLS. The low ferritin levels cause the RLS, but I think he probably has celiac. (Because he also has other digestive issues, high liver enzymes and a strong history of autoimmune disease in his family.) It will be interesting to see what happens. His doctor...
  21. I had negative blood tests and biopsy 2 years ago (see my signature below) but still believe I have celiac. I believe the biopsy was taken in the very early stages of the disease and didn't show damage yet. Did you feel better on gluten free? After being gluten-free a few months, I decided to eat gluten again to see what happened. It wasn't an immediate...
  22. The Gluten Free Kitchen by Roben Ryberg is my FAVORITE!!! She uses potato starch, corn starch and xanthan gum for all of her flour bases. As long as you have those 3 ingredients on hand, the rest of the ingredients are things I always have in my pantry. I've made at least a dozen recipies in this cookbook and they are fabulous and you can't tell they are...
  23. The emails can definitely be overwhelming. You can sign up for the "digest" version, where you get all the emails in one big long email once a day. (Not everyone knows about that!!)
  24. I'm a flybaby since October 2005 -- it's changed my LIFE!!! I don't do absolutely everything, but I'm surprised at all of the routines I've incorporated easily into my life. I also subscribe to Savingdinner.com -- the menus she promotes. I use the regular menu mailer for 6, which is usually gluten free (or very easy to subsitute gluten-free ingredients...
  25. I LOVE these cookies!!! But there are usually out of stock at my local health food stores and they are expensive!!! Anyone have a recipie for cookies that taste like these? YUM!!
