  1. I'm in a similar boat to Kathy's Unicorns...blood test was "ambiguous" for celiac due to low total IgA, but biopsy was negative for celiac. Yet, if I do not eat gluten free, I feel sluggish and have near-constant gastric issues. I seem to have a form of gluten intolerance rather than celiac, since my symptoms aren't quite as extreme as those of most people...
  2. According to the chef at our local Thai restaurant, all Thai curry dishes are gluten free, including red, green, massaman and panang (my favorite). I'm not sure if the gluten free aspect varies from restaurant to restaurant. As a bonus, I find the coconut milk in these curry dishes to be very soothing to my GI tract. Avoid anything with a brown sauce...
  3. Oh yeah, he's my favorite doctor in my current "arsenal" of doctors. Very thorough, open minded and up to speed on all the latest research. By the way, I have the sunlight/sneezing thing too. Very often when I walk from a darker interior out into very bright sun, I sneeze exactly three times. Thereafter, I'm fine. I always wonder why when it happens...
  4. I recently told my allergist that my allergy symptoms (sneezing, runny nose, post-nasal drip, coughing) seem to be less severe when I'm gluten free. He said he's had several patients report their environmental allergies clearing up when they go on gluten free diets. He said that there may be a connection between gluten and allergic reactions in general...
  5. FYI, the main reason I am going with the endoscopy is because my symptoms are not classic celiac symptoms (my main complaint is gas/abdominal cramps and I have no elimination issues other than mild constipation). My symptoms do seem to improve when I'm off gluten, but they don't go away entirely. If there is any doubt that I have celiac, and it appears...
  6. Be sure to ask what your overall IgA number was. If that number is below the normal range, you can pretty much ignore any additional "normal" levels indicated in the test, and the result is deemed ambiguous. But not all GPs are aware of that. My GP told me my celiac bloodwork was negative. But I went gluten free anyway and felt better. It wasn't until...
  7. I thought that total IgA was part of every celiac panel? In any event, you could still try getting an endoscopy to biopsy for celiac. Apparently the low total IgA does not affect a biopsy, which will show the celiac damage (if any) regardless of whether one's IgA level is low. All the low IgA does is reduce the amount of celiac-specific antibodies one...
  8. About a month and a half ago I was told by my GP that my celiac panel was "negative." Since then I have gone gluten free anyway and my gas/abdominal pain/constipation issues have generally been getting better. Today I asked about the test result in a follow up appointment with a gastroenterologist. He told me that while he doesn't think I have celiac...
  9. I am starting to feel better now, thanks. I am going to try PF Changs next time, if I can find one in my area. If not, when it comes to Chinese, it will be steamed food only for me from now on. Thanks so much for your help! jdp
  10. Thanks for helping me solve this puzzle (I'm new at this). No, I did not ask for a clean wok and utensils. Normally I get the same dish steamed with the white sauce on the side and haven't had an issue. But last night they accidently stir-fried it and I ate it thinking the sauce was OK, without even realizing the wok/utensil issue. Argghh! jdp
  11. We had Chinese food last night, and instead of the brown, soy-based sauce that I know contains gluten, I ordered the "white" sauce, which is a clear sauce that is seasoned lightly with garlic. I thought it would be safe, but perhaps not, since I've been having abdominal cramps/gas aplenty today. Does anyone know if the white sauce is typically gluten-free...
  12. You might want to look into the possibility of SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth). That is a condition I am investigating with respect to my own as yet undiagnosed symptoms as well, which are similar to yours. SIBO is treatable with anitibiotics, but I suspect more is involved in my case than just that. My celiac panel was negative, but I have...
  13. I have been having symptoms for the past 4 months that come and go. My main complaint is excessive gas and gas-related cramping/pain. But I also feel occasional pressure in my chest area and heartburn-type pain in the center of my abdomen, which seems part of my overall sense of indigestion and digestive unease. I also have constipation and have noticed...
