    ARCHIVED Red Robin

Hez: I know what you mean. Even if you're at a safe restaurant, it kind of takes the joy out of eating out when you're worried that the food will make you sick. It's such an alien feeling to me, being newly diagnosed. My husband and I used to eat at restaurants a lot. Since I've been DX'd eating out is a tense experience. That's what I hate most about...
  2. That was hilarious! I haven't laughed that hard in a looooong time! I laughed so hard the dog had to come and make sure I wasn't in trouble!! Thanks for sharing.
  3. Last night I had Kemp's Fat Free cottage cheese and mandarin oranges. I then settled into my easy chair to read Dr. Green's Celiac Disease book. After about two hours I got D. Shortly after that, coincidentally, I read in the book that fat free products should be examined carefully because they're always suspect. That was news to me. I'm thinking now...

    Pot Luck Gluten

Mosaics: It must be so hard to navigate all the events that children have when you and your child have celiac. I'm the only one in my family to have it, but I have two sons and they are very active. I went to a HS baseball 'banquet' this weekend, which turned out to be a dessert potluck. The tables were filled with cakes, cookies, brownies...
  5. My name is an reference to celiac disease. I went through three months of testing for various issues when they ultimately found celiac. At the same time I was also going through repeat mammograms and a breast cancer biopsy (testing for the 'big C'.) Had no clue they would ultimately find celiac, so I coined it 'little c.' So far, no 'big C' in my list...
  6. I have one word for regular Bud or any other regular beer...POISON. Re: vodka... vodka's made from many different sources. Potatoes, corn, wheat. I know that the distilling process is supposed to get rid of the gluten, but to be on the safe side I'm sticking with either potato or corn based vodkas from now on. Usually the vodka labels will say what...
  7. Great idea! You are a very loving wife. Your husband must have felt like it was his birthday! BTW, I love your name. That's just how I felt when my dr. told me I had celiac.
  8. hlm34: Thanks so much for the useful information. As it happened, I was in Chi-town yesterday for lunch and we ended up eating out at Benigan's (if you can call it a meal.) The server had no idea what I meant when I asked her if they had any gluten-free menu options. She did offer to talk to the chef who informed us that they didn't have a gluten...
  9. Hillarious. I'm sitting here eating a bowl of it for the first time while I browse this site. I'm thinking the same thing...I'm going to break a tooth! I thought it would get softer after it soaks in milk, but it really holds up! I'm not going to buy it again.
  10. Good luck, I hope you find it. If you do, let us know what you think of it.
  11. Nope, have not had the honor yet, either. I've heard it's a cool place, though.
  12. Anyone know of a gluten-free lunch source near Chicago's Millenium park? I'm looking for a place that will deliver to our office, which is near the park. I'll be traveling there on Tuesday. Thanks.
  13. Very well written! Since going gluten-free, I've been in similar quandries at the grocery store. Takes me hours to shop sometimes. I guess the brain fog doesn't help, either. I, too, like beer. There's no other drink like it. I've also tasted ales in the British Isles before celiac put a stop to that. And here at home...Newscastle brown ale, what...
  14. Thank you for your help.
  15. Is there a way to delete a post that we've made? I seem to accidentally double post a lot. I'm wondering if we have the ability to delete them, or if the administrators are the only ones who can do that.
  16. My first career was in the customer service business at a life insurance company. After my two boys were born I quit and was a SAHM for a year before going back to school (at age 32) for a BA in graphic design. After I graduated I got the job I'm at now, which is design director at a television station. I have since earned a master's degree in management...
  17. 7 things I hate about celiac: 1) Not being able to comfortably eat dinner out. Having to call ahead and then interrogate the server when I get there. Then feeling afraid that I'm eating hidden gluten. Kind of takes the fun out of the whole experience. 2) The cost of gluten-free food. 3) Being afraid that I'll get cancer, seizures, osteoporosis, nerve...

    Cornbread Heaven

Thanks for the info. I shop at Whole Foods and was looking for it last time I was there, but I guess I didn't look hard enough! It's a challenge shopping with brain fog sometimes!

    Does Heidi Collins have celiac?
  20. I had the opportunity to meet the president of Jones Dairy Farms today. He brought with him a staff from Jones and cooked us a great breakfast. Since being diagnosed I've avoided treats at work, but since the owner was here I took the opportunity to ask him if there was any gluten in their meats. He said absolutely none and that they're celiac friendly...

    Cornbread Heaven

Mosaics: That sounds good. My husband doesn't like cornbread, but I do. Now that I'm gluten-free, maybe I'll have him try this version. He might like it. BTW, where do you find xanthan gum in the grocery store? I have all the ingredients in my pantry except for that. I've made several trips and can't find it! Thanks, little...
  22. I had my first dentist visit since going gluten-free. It went well. All I had done was a cleaning and I informed the hygienist when I got there that I was dx'd with celiac which meant that I can't tolerate gluten. After she got the puzzled look off her face she checked the ingredients on her supplies. There were a few suspect ones on the mouthwash and...
  23. Does anyone know about water softener tablets? They're supposed to be salt, but do they put gluten in as a binder?
  24. Oops, sorry for the double post. I was trying to edit my original comment. I'm using a Mac with a pen tablet (instead of a mouse) and running Safari browser. Sometimes that causes irregularities. (or it could be operator error.)
