  1. Another vote here. My son (age 6) had this problem every day up til the day we took him off gluten (well, let's say 24 hours later). He came up a very high positive on EnteroLabs testing. Also, removal of gluten removes all of his negative symptoms. I feel bad, because we thought he was being difficult with potty training all this time. :-/ Heidi
  2. Oh, man. I am starting to get more overwhelmed, not less. I don't have a nobel-prize-winning celiac kid, just a regular one. His special 'superhuman gift' seems to be the ability to detect the flaws in gluten-free food substitutes. It is NOT going easily, and it is NOT going well. I don't know what I am doing wrong.
  3. Wow - i cannot believe this --- all these endurance athletes with celiac. Hi!!! For so many years my husband though he was the only one . He was DX'd in 1999 but I only started using these forums recently since our son was DX'd early April. ANyway - just saying hello. I am actually not a celiac but I am a celiac caregiver. Believe me if I could trade...
  4. Amanda - I am new to this format and just checked your profile and saw your other posts. My goodness, the corn + gluten thing must be difficult . What a loser dietician you encountered. And you are saying you have an older child who is extremely special needs as well??? Oh, my. I am sure you are plrenty overhwelmed how is it going. Have you been able...
  5. Just curious how you guys broached the topic with your kid(s) and at what ages. My 6 yo is only symptomatic after several days of eating gluten. Once he gets the cramps and the symptoms, he willingly goes off gluten but soon he forgets the pain and wants the gluten again. It is difficult to explain to him because he doesn't quite 'get it' with the concept...
  6. hi, I am sure the experts here will set me straight if I'm wrong, but if your child is having discomfort, and your goal might be to try gluten-free around summer, what about a brief experiment this week? Maybe even starting friday and over the weekend? You can make it a couple days gluten-free without going whole hog into gluten-free products and revisionst...
  7. OK, I'll take your word for it. ;-) Just to end on a positive note, there are two dishes our family REALLY enjoys, that are great the way they have always been, no revisions necessary. (both contain dairy unfortunately) ~banana cream pie in a crushed nut crust. I can make this as-is from New Basics cookbook. It is easy to make a nut crust, just crush...
  8. Hi, I am OK with figuring out recipes, but a bit light on logisitics. Where do you guys get teh bread crumbs to make eggplant parm? Do you make your own? I know, with the price of gluten-free bread, I woudln't want to waste a bit of it, does anyone know how to DIY breadcrumbs? Where do you (or anyone) buy your stuff like the cute pasta shapes? I live in...
  9. Thanks so much to everyone who has replied. Live and learn. I had no idea there could possibly be so many celiac vegetarians - and even a BOOK! OMG I am heading to amazon .com as soon as I sign off this forum. That said, I do plan to offer my son some fish or chicken options just so he can mix up his diet a bit. I never thought I would cook meats...
  10. Thanks for replying. I am not sure where this comes from, but my kids don't fall for the fake wheat products. I have probably spoliled my family rotten by always making fresh foods for them all this time. We went through this with my husband as well, when he was Dx'd. We tried every fake pasta, pizza, pancake , waffle , cupcake, brownie, etc that's...
  11. hi, I have seen posts by a mom called "Celiac Girls" , I believe she is vegetarian. CG are you out there??? I have been a veg for 25 + years (i'm 44, non celiac). Up til now my kids have really enjoyed being veg as well. no problems. We have even worked together doing math, counting protein grams, teaching them the importance of a healthy diet. it's been...
  12. Shealy, I am in the same boat. Just logged on this forum yesterday and created an account. I am new to being a celiac mom, but my DH is celiac. He has been DX'd (age 39 by endoscopy after a lifetime of being told nothing's wrong, but he was 130 lbs at 6'2"!) long enough to know, that you have to learn to trust your self over and above doctors. Celiac...
  13. We have had a quite a learning experience these past few weeks. to review - DH is celiac, DX'd in 1999 by endoscope. Kids (-) on bloods in about 2002. About 6 weeks ago, DS6 had a virus with vomiting. Except he just never stopped vomiting. He'd seem better for half a day or so...then more vomiting, and cramps. I brought him to the doctor who said "he...
  14. Mary Anne - I will never forget the look on DH's face when he came home from the GI and deadpanned, "well, basically, i've had my last beer". (that was 1999 before gluten-free beer) yes, there are emotions and they are legitmiate. I am not a celiac myself but I do feel that as a spouse and probably a celiac mom, I have a pretty good idea at how hard it...
  15. Holiday, you have a really supportive family that would go and do that testing. I have to say, DH's family is in total denial and tries to feed him bread when we visit. "oh, you still got THAT?" LOL Meanwhile, it would be a really helpful piece of info for future generations if they could know which side the celiac came from. Heidi
  16. Hi, my name is Heidi and I am new here but old everywhere else. :-) I have been reading this board for a few weeks but only took the plunge to create my user account today. I am going to be chiming in on a few topics , and also asking some questions, but I thought first i'd do a formal introduction. Heidi , age 44 , stay-home-mom , NYC, non-celiac...
