  1. Hi guys, I go to Dr. Keshavarzian from Rush in Chicago. He also has hours in a Skokie office. He and his staff dedicate themselves to Celiac Disease. He is a fabulous gastroenterologist, great with biopsies- seriously, don't be afraid- he will ONLY do that if needed. He is up with the latest practices, studies, etc. Not every gastroenterologist is as well...
  2. Hi Band C, Don't get discouraged. I believe you need to thoroughly review all your questions with your gastroenterologist and you'll see that #s 1, 2, and 4 are probably yes. I'm not sure about #3. Your villi can completely recover. Yes your stiffness could be due to being glutened. You probably have to tighten the diet- that's it. And watch the diabetes...
  3. To I love bread, Hold on a minute! You are not being dramatic. But, having been a celiac and gluten free for 3 years now, or at least as much as I can control, it is our job to have a little patience and educate our loved ones. Just think: you are used to living with your pains, worries, and anxiety about what's going on in your body. They are not! So the...
  4. Hi! I have a top specialist in the field from Rush. His name is Dr. Keshavarzian and he is totally dedicated to the research and latest findings of celiac sprue. His nutritionist is Sue Mikolitis. They are both excellent and you'll love them. About an oby/gyne in the field- I'm sure they can recommend. Good Luck! Lillian
  5. Yes! I LOVE that Wheat Free restaurant/bakery. It's the best thing since I can remember! It's great knowing that I can get freshly baked cookies, biscottis, bread and more without the hassle of having to prepare it myself. I love knowing it's close to my house- finally an easy place to go to and find whatever I feel like eating. You are right! No problems...
  6. Hi, If you are willing to come to Chicago, I have a terrific GI specialist whose group does tons of research about celiac disease. He is from Rush University in Chicago. His name is Dr. Keshavarzian. Please email me and let me know if you want any more info on him. There's no reason why your mom can't have a quality life. It just takes being creative and...
  7. Hi Kathy, I was diagonesed being a Celiac in November of 2005. With very strict diet- or should I say new way of eating- I have gotten better and I'm absorbing nutrients so well to the point where I now have to exercise and watch what I eat because I had put on a lot of weight (after having lost about 25 pounds in a period of 4 months.) As of April, I am...
  8. Hang in there! I totally agree with you about everything. I teach and in the summers I WAS always used to meeting tons of friends for lunch. But this summer, I've been going to the health club and swimming and getting in shape because this diet has caused me to gain weight. Yah, like I'm really happy that I'm now 'absorbing nutrients' and I'm 'healthy.' ...
  9. You WILL do great! I mean it! Just think of all the foods we CAN eat! Your friends, believe it or not, need your educational background on the subject and want to be with you and support you, but probably don't know how. You'll have to be a stronger advocate for yourself and they'll hopefully and slowly start to get it. You don't want to make new friends...
  10. Hi, I agree with Ken70. I hate those head fogs. I never knew what they were until my diagnose almost 2 years ago. I used to think my mind was playing tricks on me. I would purposely initiate conversations just to make sure I was on track and not talking nonsense. Also, it seems like I work harder at concentrating when I get the head fog, or gluten fog. I...
  11. Hi, Are you anemic and taking extra iron. That may cause your nausea too. When I felt nauseaus it was because I was eating foods high in iron, like artichokes, spinach, eggplant, but I needed the iron to be absorbed with like rice. Otherwise I'd be nauseaous. Try eating foods high in iron with rice or a rice pasta. Hope this helps and don't get discouraged...
  12. Hi worriedwife, You sound like you have true concerns about your husband's comfort and that's great to know. My husband is extremely suppoprtive also and often eats gluten free food with me. Don't get discouraged. I was diagnosed about 2 years and it's still and will always be a daily battle/getting informed/becoming my own advocate sort of lifestyle. ...
  13. Hi little d, Your GI can see you and tell you if it's DH or not. You don't need a dermatologist also. Get a prescription from your GI. He should be your case manager, that's it unless you can't function because of the itching. Also, I have found that we know more about our own bodies and reactions than the doctors a this point. So as you tighten your diet...
  14. Hi Lunai. small dose of doxycyline works for me for about two weeks at a time, about 3 times a year. Also some of the dairy products could cause the rash. I'm staying away from Dapsone myself. But chances are you are getting some glutens in you without you knowing. Remember, tons of foods are laced with wheat. Check the labels. Ask for oil, vinegar, lemon...
  15. Hi little d, I have DH too. It's on and off- on my leg between my knee and my ankle. I sometimes use a little make up to cover it up if I wear shorts or skirts. Nobody has to know. Your gastroenterologist- the specialist that diagnosed you, should see you. He'lll know if it's DH, which means you are probably getting some glutens into your system. You might...
  16. Hi Crystal, I've been on the gluten-free diet for about a year and a half now. The best thing to do is to get yourself in to see a nutrionist that specializes in gluten-free diets. Think of all that you can eat, as opposed to what you can't. For starters, any raw vegetabe or fruit is fine. As far as chicken, beef or fish is concerned, anything broiled...
