  1. I checked my shampoos and stuff that I'm currently using and they're okay...but what are the mainstream products that use gluten that I should avoid? Also, what about going to the salon? Do you check all their products too? Thanks...still new at this!!!
  2. Totally random things, but I need to know before this weekend. Thanks in advance! HVR lists "modified food starch" on their bottled dressing and packets...is it okay? I emailed the company but would like to know ASAP. And I'm going to make a gluten-free cake this weekend. The recipe calls for "gluten free vanilla"...is this different than vanilla...
  3. We stayed at the Harboside resort on The Atlantis property, which meant we had a full kitchen (we stayed here b/c of our 3 kiddos, not b/c of my dietary needs). I had just found out about the celiac disease diagnosis 2 weeks before we left and our trip was planned months in advance. I was worried about eating out so often b/c I had been cooking all my own...
  4. I'm sorry to hear that (((HUGS))). I know most of their diet at that age is GLUTEN as I have 2 daughters around that age. I found out I have celiac disease a bit over a week ago and we decided to have the kids tested even though they don't really show symptoms for it. Our Ped GI does the bloodwork and then if that is positive, they do the scope as...
  5. Me again. I just checked Michelina's website (those are the frozen dinners I used to buy the most...and they are pretty cheap) and here are the "wheat-free" ones (I suppose you should still check the labels for hidden BRO though: Cheddar Broccoli Potatoes Grilled Chicken BBQ Creamy Parmesan Chicken Grilled Chicken Most of these you pop in the...
  6. Oh yeah, and I wanted to add that there is a document somewhere that says you can claim the expenses above what you would normally pay for non-gluten-free items as a tax deduction. I don't really understand a lot of financial stuff (I leave that to my CPA husband), but when I told him about it, he said it would be worth it to keep track of it. I think you...
  7. JNBunnie1 - I thought distilled vinegar was okay??? Just malt vinegar was bad? Anyway, I've been gluten-free for a week now and here are some of the things we've been eating... Lots of chicken! I made it with extra virgin olive oil and some Pampered Chef seasoning...and then with LaChoy soy sauce. I added some frozen stir fry veggies, water...
  8. Before I found out I had celiac disease, my doc prescribed Bentyl to help with the diarrhea (we thought it was just my IBS flaring up again after the birth of my son). That stuff acts like industrial strength Immodium and it really helped a lot. I don't know if your doc can prescribe it for you to help while you're back on gluten??? Just a thought. Hang...
  9. So sorry to hear this. I had a m/c before getting pregnant with my twins (WAY before I knew I had celiac disease). Unfortunately, miscarriages are very common these days...I have tons of friends who have suffered them as well. I belong to a few "TTC/pregnancy" sites...I'm not sure if there's a special section for celiac disease or not. One of them...
  10. When I first got dx'd, I thought it was the end of the world. I was so angry and upset. That quickly turned into "excitement" as I tried to figure out what mainstream foods I could still eat, which brands we just needed to switch (i.e. Kikkoman to LaChoy), how to substitute recipe ingredients to make them gluten-free, and sampling all the gluten-free specialty...
  11. I had a follow up with my GI doc yesterday (scopes and dx were just last week) and he is concerned about my anemia and calcium/vitamin absorption...and he's also sending me for a bone density test. He told me to take THREE iron pills each day (I'm currently taking one/day) and to add Viactiv calcium chews as well. Is this pretty standard? What supplements...
  12. I don't really have an answer for you, but wanted to say that elevated liver enzymes were one of my presenting symptoms (along with diarrhea and anemia)...which is why my GI doc ordered the bloodwork and scopes for celiac disease. I'm not sure how the liver is involved with celiac disease...other than the digestive system isn't "up to par" b/c of the...
  13. GeoffCJ - Thanks for the compliment! Congrats to your sis...twins are a lot of fun! Thanks everyone for the responses. I made some frozen veggies the other night that said "manufactured in the same facility as wheat products" and have been fine. I wonder if it depends on the food as well? Some may be more permeable than others, which would...
  14. Thanks everyone! I honestly don't think I'm that sensitive to gluten, but what do I know? I'm glad to know it's generally okay to eat those things...it's surprising how many labels I've come across that say that. And I agree about it being a CYA statement...and who knows what cross-contamination you're getting in restaurants. I haven't eaten out since...
  15. My dietician told me to skip stuff that had this on the label...but today I saw some gluten-free SPECIALTY items that said this. WHAT?!? So is it okay? Is it a sensitivity issue? Help a newbie out please
  16. Is cream cheese okay? Specifically Philadelphia Cream Cheese flavored? Also, what about wine coolers? Lots of them are malt beverages, so I'm guessing they're a no no, right? Are there any that are safe? Like Bacardi or Smirnoff? What about the White Russian/kahlua kinds? Sorry, I'm new at this and don't want to make a silly mistake...not...
  17. I don't really have any advice b/c I'm new to this...but wanted to say congrats! Sounds like things are really looking up for you It sucks about the doctor and misdiagnosis...I can't imagine what that must feel like. But good for you for taking charge of your health and going gluten-free! Take care.
  18. I'm new to "celiac-land" and can hardly remember my biology classes from college, but I think if it were recessive, your husband would have to have it (or at least be a "carrier" for it), right? Can you be a carrier of this disease? Anyway, does anyone know how much environmental factors play into this? I find it odd that I had no symptoms for 22 years...
  19. I always thought I was lactose intolerant...and now with the celiac disease dx, I wonder if I really am or if it was the gluten that was bothering me all this time...or could it be both? I've been using Lactaid for years now, but still eat regular cheese, sour cream, ice cream, etc. Would an allergist be able to tell me? What about other things like soy...
  20. I don't have it in front of me to see the brand, but it was from a local grocery store and was white rice based. Yuck! Are there any decent breads out there? Or do you just use tortillas or rice cakes?
  21. We leave next Saturday for a week. We plan to eat at the buffets for breakfast, the poolside bar and grills for lunch, and then I'll probably just do meat, veggies, and baked potato for dinner at the gourmet restaurants. If I do salad, I should stick with oil and vinegar dressing, right? What breakfast and lunch items would be okay? Obviously fruit...
  22. So, you would *think* a taco would be okay...but unfortunately, TB uses oats in their shells and meat. Why? Who knows. Anyway, according to their ingredient statement, tostada shells, beans, and rice are okay (as well as the sauce - minus fire sauce). So would a tostada of beans, lettuce, cheese, and mild sauce be okay? Do you eat there?
  23. I was dx'd and started my gluten-free diet on Monday. I've been doing very well since then (D wise) but this morning, I've gone 4 times already!!! The only thing I can think of from yesterday is that I licked 2 envelopes and used Kraft Miracle Whip (wasn't sure about the modified food starch, but remembered seeing Miracle Whip on a gluten-free list). Would...
  24. I was dx'd Monday and saw a dietician yesterday so this is all still new to me, but for now my confusion lies within these ingredients... broths natural flavoring modified food starch (saw another thread on this) So, are these safe...or do you only use them if the product is listed on a gluten-free list? Any good lists out there? I have this one...
  25. I met with a dietician yesterday and she said that the FDA requires them to list if it's wheat, but I guess they don't always do that (or like a pp said, it could be barley, rye, or oats). But, we should be able to assume it's corn starch. I think I'm only going to use things with modified food starch if I've seen the product on a gluten-free list.
