  1. I have had hair loss off and on for the past two years or so (and I'm only 28). It is all over and definitely noticeable. I use volumizing shampoos, but you can still see more of my scalp where I part my hair. I've had my thyroid and iron levels checked and all came back fine. I did try Rogaine for two months or so (as my dermatologist recommended) and...
  2. I usually wake up once or twice between 11pm and 1am, and when I do I have to pee before I can go back to sleep. Then I tend to wake up again around 5am or 6am - if it's after 6 I just get up since I usually can't go back to sleep for less than an hour (and I have to get up before 7). So I make multiple bathroom trips during the night, but I don't have...
  3. I do bruise easily, but I am taking a weak blood thinner for another condition, which might explain it. Random bruises will show up on my legs or arms when I don't even remember bumping in to anything. I don't consider myself klutzy either.
  4. If you wake up and are too awake to go back to sleep, you could try getting up and having some hot tea (herbal of course) or warm milk or something to relax your body again. Maybe listen to a little calming music, like piano... anything to get your mind to stop focusing on getting back to sleep. I find the more I try to go to sleep if I'm restless, the...
  5. I have seen this magazine at Whole Foods and Borders before (possibly Barnes and Noble as well). Not sure if it is on the newsstand yet though.
  6. I recently subscribed to Eating Well magazine, and in the October issue I just received, there is an article about food allergies. Although it is focused on actual allergies, it does briefly explain the difference between an allergy and an intolerance, and includes a whole paragraph about celiac disease, correctly highlighting that celiacs must avoid barley...
  7. Well I always get sushi with avocado in it, and usually I'm fine. It wasn't a laxative type problem... I get gas gurgling in my intestines or bowel and it doesn't go anywhere, just moves around and gurgles (when it finally comes out, it's gas and mucus). I have had much less of it since I started the gluten free diet though. It used to be that it would...
  8. Thanks for the info Dandelion! I wonder if maybe it was the soy in my gluten-free soy sauce since I hadn't had it before. I have eaten sushi at Whole Foods before without problems, but not the salmon roll.
  9. I have had this problem off and on for months now (even before I went gluten free), and I eat an average of 35g of fiber a day (about 1/4 of that is from a supplement). I'm pretty sure I'm getting enough fiber, but I still have periods where I feel like everything is backed up and my morning BMs are much smaller. For me it tends to coincide with other symptoms...
  10. I've had the gluten free version of the Singapore Street Noodles about 4 or 5 times now, and it has never been spicy. My tongue is pretty sensitive to spicy food (I'm a spice wimp). It has always been very mild for me, no spice at all. Maybe they made a mistake in the kitchen or they had a different chef - I have experienced meals there tasting different...
  11. My IC medication (Elmiron) has been the biggest help for my pain, but I'm not sure if it is safe for children. You may want to look into freeze dried aloe vera - some people with IC have had success with it, and it is a more natural approach to treating the bladder walls. Aloe vera juice and gel (the edible kind) can work too, but make sure not to get any...
  12. Thanks for the responses. The bumps are gone, still a little itchy though (the back of my head has been kind of itchy too, not sure if it is related). I guess the best thing to do is to wait and see if it happens again. If it was an isolated incident, then it was probably something from camping.
  13. It's been about five weeks now on the gluten-free diet, so I'm still fairly new at it. I've been dairy free for many months, and I limit my soy quite a bit. I had probably less than a teaspoon of the soy sauce, but I haven't had it before, so it's possible that was the cause. Large amounts of soy gives me migraines and makes me feel sick/sleepy, but I have...
  14. Thanks for the info. I have no idea what else could be causing me problems. I'm doing a trial gluten free phase after negative bloodwork, and seem to be doing better, but I don't know if it is because of the diet. It's so frustrating.
  15. Here is the ingredient list: Rice (see below), Salmon, Avocado, Sesame Seed, Honey Ginger (Ginger, Water, Fructose, Salt, Honey, Vinegar, Citric Acid, Malic Acid), Green Mustard (Horseradish, Mustard, Corn Flour, Spirulina), Soy Sauce (see package), Seaweed. Milled Rice, with Vinegar (High Fructose Corn Syrup, Water, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Brown...
  16. Today I had some Whole Foods sushi (Salmon Avocado roll). I had some of the wasabi and my own San-J soy sauce (gluten free). Almost immediately after eating the sushi my stomach started gurgling. This is the main symptom that has become much better since I went gluten free a month ago. So I'm wondering if maybe the sushi or the wasabi isn't gluten free...
  17. I found some bars that have added rice protein. They are gluten free, dairy free, and soy free. Raw Organic Food Bars: Open Original Shared Link (the "RAW" flavors - check ingredients to make sure they are the gluten free ones). The cinnamon raisin is pretty good, but very cinnamon-y. I haven't tried the other flavors, but I think the cinnamon raisin...
  18. I actually looked at my regular grocery store first and did not find any gluten free oyster sauce. Since I use very little of it, one bottle lasts me a long time.
  19. I was diagnosed with IBS, and after worsening symptoms over a year later, my doctor ran the celiac panel blood test. They all came back negative. However, instead of waiting two months to see my doctor again (and since the anti-spasmodics she gave me were not helping), I decided to try a gluten free diet anyway. It has been a little over a month now, and...
  20. Hmm, I still don't understand the difference between celiac and non-celiac gluten intolerance. Is it based only on genes? Functionally are the two the same? If so, the gene definition doesn't make sense to me. There must be something that functionally distinguishes a gluten intolerance gene from a celiac gene... otherwise why would they be called different...
  21. I think getting into a steady habit is important. Try to get to bed around the same time every night, go through a little bed time routine to get your mind used to going to sleep afterwards. Personally, watching TV in bed actually helps me fall asleep because I'm used to doing it (I wouldn't recommend it if you're not used to it though). If I watch TV...
  22. I found some gluten-free oyster sauce at my local Whole Foods - I think it is the Choy Sun.
  23. My husband and I used to eat at P. F. Chang's all the time before I started gluten-free. I was so happy to find that they have a gluten-free menu, and the first thing I tried was the Singapore Street Noodles. Since they were so good and I felt fine after eating them, I haven't tried anything else yet! I've had them about 3 or 4 times now.
  24. I know that celiac is an autoimmune reaction to gluten and that any small amount of gluten can cause this reaction. Is it the same for non-celiac gluten intolerance? Or is there something else going on mechanically if you don't have celiac? If it is a non-celiac gluten intolerance, will any small amount of gluten cause a reaction or does it depend on the...
  25. Thanks for the response. I'm fairly certain it is not poison ivy or poison oak since I am very familiar with what those look like and was watching out for them on the trip. Also, it was only the backs of my ears and nowhere else on my body (like my legs or arms, which would be more common). One thing that was unusual for me was that I got more sun on...
