ARCHIVED Link Between Celiac And Learning Disabilities?
Virgie replied to cruelshoes's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! I'm sorry! I probably should have made this more clear - My son does have an Inflammatory Bowel Disease which is called Ulcerative Colitis. He has had 4 colonoscopies which have showed pancolitis (meaning his whole colon was affected). He has also had the endosopy done which showed Eosinophilic Esophagitis. At which time he went through a battery... -
ARCHIVED Link Between Celiac And Learning Disabilities?
Virgie replied to cruelshoes's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It is interesting that dysgraphia has been brought up. My son (now 18 & Senior in HS) does not have Celiac but does have an Inflammatory Bowel Disease so his digestion is still affected. I have always felt that my son has dysgraphia. He has never been able to write well. He was tested in 3rd grade and did have some occupational therapy for awhile... -
ARCHIVED Eating Out- A Onion Ring Was In With The Fries-argh!
Virgie posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! Being we are still new to this we have not eaten out very much. I thought we were doing everything right - asked if the fries were gluten free, asked if made in a dedicated fryer, told them she had celiac disese and that the fries could not be made in the same fryer as the onion rings, chicken nuggets, etc. So we get the order, sit down, and start... -

Virgie replied to confusedks's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi again Kassandra! I have been thinking about your meeting coming up. Hope it goes well. Here is a link someone told me about that had letters that I could print off for teachers, cafeteria workers, principal, etc. I did use it and just made a few changes. I think it did help some although I think some of the teachers have already forgotten the information... -
ARCHIVED Close Call With Milky Way...
Virgie replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! I'm glad that she felt ok after eating it. It scares me sometimes when my daughter tells me her stomach hurts & I try to think of what she ate. I'm sure she will remember next time not to eat that kind of candybar. "Of course, now that it is Saturday morning and she has to clean her room, suddenly she "doesn't feel good." Ohhhhhh the drama... -
Hi! Just wondering if any of your kids have blood in their stools. Daughter (age 13) was dx with Celiac first part of September & has been gluten-free since 9/9. Been feeling much better. But the last few days hasn't been feeling as well and has had bloody diarreha. Is this a symptom of being glutened? Or is something else going on with her? Her...

ARCHIVED Testing-optimum Health Resource Laboratories
Virgie posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi! I have been thinking of using Enterolab to test the rest of the family. Daughter was dx with Celiac last month. I have also seen this place Open Original Shared Link. Has anyone used this lab?? I also wonder if I should test my daughter for Casein as she is still having some stomach pain after being gluten-free for a month. We are very careful so... -

Virgie replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks for the info. I wish everything didn't cost so blooming much as I would like to do this for the rest of the family. Daughter we already have a dx of Celiac but I do wonder about dairy for her as she still has times of not feeling well. It sounds like a great test. Will have to look into it some more. Thanks again!!! Virginia -
ARCHIVED School And Coping With Pain
Virgie replied to PattiD2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! I have been going through the same thing with my son for the past 3 years. 9th grade he missed 80 days, 10th 68 and some late starts, last year wasn't as bad about 20, but this year he has already missed 12. He doesn't have Celiac but does have stomach issues because of Ulcerative Colitis. He also has EE but that doesn't bother him too much (I think... -
ARCHIVED Sent Enterolab Specimen
Virgie replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! My 13 year old daughter was dx last month with Celiac and I have been wondering if the rest of the family should get tested. Did you purchase the test right from the Enterolab site or somewhere else? Did you buy the complete (most expensive test)? How do you do it? Is it a stool sample? Sorry for all the questions but just wondering if I should... -
ARCHIVED Making Sandwiches Work
Virgie replied to buffettbride's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi!! My 13 year old daughter dx in September packs a lunch every day and does not like rice cakes so she wants sandwiches. She likes the Ener-G light tapioca bread. I don't toast it for her sandwich because she does not want it toasted at all. But she does say that you have to put lots and lots of peanut butter on it otherwise it seems quite dry. ... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Me Out Here.....
Virgie replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Has this person not seen anything on TV or in print lately about Jenny McCarthy and how she feels that the Gluten-free Casein-free diet has helped her autistic son???? Also I really can not see why it would be harmful for one to go on this diet. I really think this person is misunderstanding. Sigh! Virginia -
ARCHIVED Very New To This And Using My Bread Machine
Virgie replied to Virgie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks everyone for the tips and words of encouragement. Interestingly enough my brother asked me if it was windy & rainy when I made my bread and I said "es it was." And he was "There you go, that's why it did that." So maybe it wasn't totally me messing it up. And it did still taste good. Much better than the boughten stuff. Although my daughter... -
ARCHIVED Very New To This And Using My Bread Machine
Virgie posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi! I am pretty new to this (about a month in) and just got my bread machine today. I immediately had to bake some gluten-free bread to see if it tasted better than some of the breads that I have been buying. Well I used Bob's Red Mill gluten-free bread mix and it raised good and looked good but when I took it out of the machine the sides caved in .... -

ARCHIVED Why Is gluten-free Food So Freaking Expensive?
Virgie replied to leelee20's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
THANKS NO GLU GIRL !! This is a really big help to me too as we are only on Week 1 of the gluten free diet. My 13 year old daughter just got dx with Celiac but I am trying to go gluten free (or at least gluten lightly) with her. I am having bread withdrawal. I'm sure that it will get better though. I really do appreciate the list because it has... -
ARCHIVED I Feel Like I've Been Run Over By A Tanker Truck!
Virgie replied to glutenfreechick's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi! I am fairly new to the celiac diet too as this is our first week. I too think that we are suffering from gluten withdrawal. We have been tired and achy too. My 13 year old daughter got dx with Celiac (blood test first & then biopsy done) on September 4th so we are really only into week 1 with the diet. I am trying to go gluten free too. And... -
Hi! Just wondering if any Minnesota people are on this board, and if they belong to a support group. Thanks. Virgie

ARCHIVED Does The Spouse Really Understand
Virgie replied to Mally-bug's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
["Over that already" - That sounds like my mother who thinks my 13 year old daughter with Celiac and 17 year old son with Ulcerative Colitis will "grow out of it". Sigh!!! We just found out for my daughter so I'm not sure how supportive everyone will be yet. It can be frustrating when others don't get it. Virgie quote name='emcmaster... -
ARCHIVED Oh No, Not A Newbie!
Virgie replied to AnObstinateOne's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! So sorry to hear about your little one !! It is hard to watch them be sick and not growing. Just wanted to know if they have done any tests to rule out Crohns Disease or Ulcerative Colitis?? My son has UC and at first diagnosis he had only grown 1 inch in a year and gained 3 lbs. at the most & that was when he was 14 years old and should... -
ARCHIVED Cankersores?
Virgie replied to Joni63's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi! I have a terrible mouth full of sores at the moment so maybe gluten could be an issue for me too. I'm sure the doctor will probably want to test the rest of the family at my daughters appt. next week. However, just wanted to let you know that mouth sores is also quite common with people having Crohns Disease or Ulcerative Colitis. Best to... -
When I was a kid, I had an infected tooth. My mom gave me some kind of whiskey and had me swish it around in my mouth to numb it and then spit it out. I do remember that helping - and I was a good girl and didn't swallow it - but as an adult, swallowing the whiskey might help, too Hehe My Mom had me do that too. I actually wouldn't mind a drink if...

Thank you all for replying. I have been dealing with an infected tooth and haven't been on as much lately. I still feel like I am going nuts waiting for the doctor appt. & scope. I am thinking they will probably want to do a colonoscopy as well being my son has UC & my daughter also has been having bloody diarreha. The prep for that will not...
