Ok so then for the food law which we were discussing.. if a product were to contain "Gliadin" or "Glutenin" it would have to be labeled as WHEAT. This DOES NOT MEAN it is GLUTEN FREE. Correct now right? -

Alright.. then is the "gluten" in rye/barley from the proteins that barley/rye naturally contain or is it incidental like in oats from crop cross contamination? I eat gluten-free Oatmeal without a problem (although expensive). If the gluten in rye/barley was cross contamination from the crops.. then it would have to be listed as WHEAT in the ingredients... -

So Glutenin (which is the protein in wheat) or Gliadin (which is the protein in wheat) must be labeled correct? I thought Gluten = Glutenin = Protein in Wheat. Please correct me if I am wrong. -

What about if their proteins are the SAME as a wheat protein? The medical literature I read said the proteins are the same which is why I said what I said - are the barley and rye proteins not the same? You may be right there - I am not sure the difference between barley and rye proteins.. but so you all know.. It can still say WHEAT FREE.. what I am saying is they have to do one of the following: "Label the package: Allergens: WHEAT" OR "Ingredients: contains barley" Both would be legal.. I had similar symptoms to yours - and the only test with anything I got was an IgA level was 48. <25 was normal and >50 was abnormal.. 25-50 was equivocal (This lab was from the Mayo Clinic lab.) My first post in this thread shows it.. see the other thread were I posted links to the FDA website and the law. The law isn't clear because lawyers wrote it!!! Also.. it's all listed AT THE END of the law under the DEFINITION of 'major food allergen'. It then proceeds in (1) to list the 8 allergens. Then paragraph (2) states a protein of the allergens... -

This law only mentions putting an allergen label on foods that CONTAIN gluten - no talk about gluten-free.. If the proteins of Barley/Rye - namely glutenin (aka gluten) are in a food, then it will label it as "Allergens: WHEAT". This was a new amendment to the law. Derivatives of barley or rye which could contain glutenin would also have to be labeled... -

Please note: This indicates that gluten is NOT considered one of the 8 major allergens but that WHEAT = GLUTEN.. i.e. Gluten will be labeled AS WHEAT. There is no difference between wheat gluten, barley gluten and rye gluten (there is but slightly)... If I read the law.. they MUST label any 'gluten' as WHEAT, correct no? And Casein labeled as MILK. -

I called up Frito Lay and spoke with their nutrionist which was very helpful. I was told that my call was the first REPORT they had of an allergic/celiac reaction to their product - and that they take it VERY seriously (which is good to hear!). Unfortunately she couldn't assure me they would change anything apparent to me but they look into their manufacturing... -

I would recommend checking for Folic Acid deficiency. My father had a bad case of peripheral neuropathy (diagnosed by a neurologist) and a deficiency in folic acid. I wouldn't use a microwave if you are ... you would have to try some sort of 'steamer' otherwise to keep them soft while warming them up but I've NEVER had luck doing that so. One thing.. we have alot of those resturaunts where I live.. but the particular franchise DOES NOT always offer gluten-free food or menus.... namely Outback, Carabas, Bonefish Grill and Cheeseburger in Paradise. As a note to what Gemini said.. I have symptoms similar to yours.. I had multiple biopsies and I had NEGATIVE results - blood test and biopsy. However, I definitely have a gluten intolerance/allergy!
