  1. Bob's Red Mill Garfava flour is a favorite of mine to use in breads and pizza crusts. If you are in the mood for home made bread, check out the recipezaar site for gluten free flax bread. It is number 190906. Carol Fenster has a pizza crust recipe on her web site the savory palate that has garfava flour. I think the recipe is also on the Bob's Red...
  2. I will second the mayonaise treatment. It worked for my daughter. Cover the child's hair in a thick coating of the mayo and cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap for about 2 hours, then shampoo clean. All bedding should be washed thoroughly. Put any cloth toys or stuffed animals in plastic bags and leave for 2 weeks as another poster recommended. This...
  3. Ruth, Glad to hear you have found someone who treats you well after so many years with your former boyfriend. For those who may still be with someone who drinks daily...a word to the wise...they are alcoholics and you should spare yourself the pain. Remove yourself from the situation until they have their drinking under control. No one needs to drink...
  4. Your insurance company will have an appeal process. Call the customer service number to find out how you file an appeal. Upon review by the medical director, (who is a physician and not a claims adjuster) will know that the only treatment for Celiac is dietary modification-- your request for a nutrition consult should be approved. My own consult was initially...
  5. Against the Grain also makes bagels and rolls and can be found in the freezer case. They remind me of croissants in texture. I have used only that brand of rolls since I found them at my local health food store about a year ago. They are also available at Whole Foods Markets in the New England area. I've noticed recently that the rolls I have been...

    ARCHIVED Dietician In Nyc?

Just curious to know if you appealed the decision by your insurance company who did not cover the cost of a nutrition consult in Celiac Disease. My own insurance denied it, but was covered when it went through the medical review process. As we all know, the only treament for Celiac disease is dietary modification. For the record, I am insured by Blue...
  7. Interesting article. Thanks for the link.
  8. Add me to the list. I cannot eat millet in any form without getting sick. I know it is gluten free, but have tried it baked in breads and in recipes of my own with gluten-free Bob's Red Mill flour and got sick everytime. What's up with that?
  9. Another (free) option is to go to www.foodallergybuddy.com. You can customize your information and print out a whole page of food allergy alert cards. This is sponsored by the National Restaurant Association. I have used this with success when I can tell my server isn't familiar with food allergies or Celiac issues. I bought the inexpensive laminating...
  10. How did the bread turn out with out vinegar? I did a quick check of my gluten-free cook books regarding vinegar. You can substitute dough enhancer (available in the health food section) or even substitute lemon juice for the acid the vinegar provides. I can recall the acid is necessary for the chemical interaction. I wouldn't omit the vinegar without substituting...
  11. Holly, Have you tried Carol Fenster's recipe for pizza crust? I found it online at Recipezaar dot com--recipe number 44487. works perferctly each time and is quite tasty. Even my non-gluten-free husband loves this. when it is too hot to use the oven for pizza, try covering the pizza with foil and cooking it outside with the gas grill. Best of all...
  12. Hi Cee Cee, I make Laurie's Gluten Free Flax bread most often. Her recipe is on the recipezaar.com site # 190906. I didn't have good luck with Lorka's bread, unfortunately. What kind of bread machine do you have? I use a Cuisinart bread machine with a gluten free setting. It makes a 1.5# loaf. Take it out 15 minutes before it is supposed...
  13. What great news! thank you so much for the heads up on this one. I live 20 minutes from Concord, so I emailed the Outback to confirm this information and was pleasantly surprised when the manager/owner, Mark phoned me himself. He stated they are the only ones with gluten free rolls and hamburger buns right now. Can't wait to try them out! I usually frquent...
  14. sometimes being dehydrated or anemic can also produce the symptoms you are describing. 6-8 glasses of fluid per day is a reasonable goal. Have you had a cbc (hemoglobin/hemocrit) checked recently? I always reach for food when I get light headed, not realizing my body really needs fluids. hope this helps!
  15. Ehrin, Would you (or anyone else who reads these posts) be interested in a group that meets in Manchester? I have no desire to travel to Merrimack, Nashua or Keene where I know other groups are currently meeting but might be able to free up some time for a meeting here in Manchester. As a nurse, I have lots of resources available to me and meet lots...
  16. Hi, I read your post and hope you can generate some interest in a local support group. I am not aware of any organized group in the Manchester area. By the wide availability of gluten free food I surmise there must be plenty of celiacs in the area! I have heard that the Healthy Villi group in the Boston area is quite active and a great resource, if you...
  17. Hi, I had the same problem with my circa 1983 Mix master. I only use if for cake batter and gluten free pizza dough now. Even though most recipes state not to use the dough hooks, I find that is the only way my mixer can stand up to the gluten-free doughs. My solution was to purchase a bread machine (Cuisinart) to handle the kneading of the bread doughs...
