  1. Last Thursday flew coach on Continental from Newark to San Diego. A gluten-free meal *was* an option, hooray! Meal was brought almost as soon as we took off, before the regular meal service (yeah, no neighbor crumbs to worry about). Meal was plain lettuce, lemon wedges (instead of dressing), fruit cup (fresh whole grapes and strawberries), a Jennie...
  2. check out Open Original Shared Link. I think there's more threads here and there on this site, try searching on "Hartford" or "CT" and choose threads in the restaurant forum. Happy eating!
  3. There's a local gluten-free group in San Diego that does restaurant trips, picnics, and some other events, Open Original Shared Link The El Indio tortilla chips are gluten-free and very addictive, many of the local grocers carry them
  4. not the pie, but ingredients might work for what you have on hand & in garden: one of my spouse's favorites is bacon, sliced summer squash and/or zucchini, and onions fry the bacon, remove from pan, drain some grease if you wish (depending on taste & fat requirements), add in coarse chopped onion, once that cooks a bit add in the squash....
  5. also check out Open Original Shared Link and the restaurant list (scroll down, on right hand side) at Open Original Shared Link. Despite the name this diner is also gluten free (also no fish, no seafood, no dairy - you get the idea). Happy dining!
  6. I can handle the dried dates in Lara bars fine (usually have either a whole one or just half). But the whole dried dates at Whole Foods I get a mild reaction to. Don't know if it's the sulfur or some gluten in a dusting of something to keep the fruit from sticking. Ah, the food adventure!
  7. All 'premium' wines should be gluten-free. Judging by posts on this site & stories from folks in the wine industry, some of the lower priced wines *may* have additional additives that *may* cause reactions in some folks. I would guess that if it is plain (not mulled or spiced) wine and comes in a bottle it's almost certainly gluten-free. I have had...
  8. That is very possible. Or perhaps this outlet used a non-corporate-approved marinade, or added flour to the corporate-approved marinade. My rule is, even if I think a food 'should' be gluten-free, if a server or manager tells me it is not gluten-free, then I do not eat it. Better safe than sorry! Now if they say 'you can't have that, it has rice'...
  9. Love the gluten-free shopper-buddy idea! For lactose, I couldn't handle it when I first went gluten-free, but after about 2 months I was okay - everyone's body is different, for some folks it is an initial issue only, others are lactose (or even casein) free for life. Once your digestion seems under control you may want to self-test some milk product...
  10. Bea- okay, this is getting spooky. I too have double jointed thumbs (I can make them look like 'panda thumbs'). Maybe I should stop doing that, too? You may also want to consider massage in conjunction with chiro and/or physical therapy - ask around, some massage therapists are great at helping to realign hips. Others look at me like I am speaking...
  11. not exactly the same, but perhaps related in a broad celiac way... As a kid I could, at will, make either my right or left leg thigh bone pop out of joint with my hip. Then a doctor responded in horror to this (when I was 18 or so?) and I stopped doing it on purpose. But I can still get out of alignment easily if I walk too long on hard pavement, or...
  12. Hope you are feeling better & less overwhelmed now! I agree with most all the comments on this thread. One more bring-to-work idea - some foods, if you leave home with them frozen they're thawed enough to microwave quickly for lunch and you can avoid a separate freezer pack. If you haven't already, please take the time to check your protein...
  13. We were on vacation in San Diego recently and had an interesting (and eventually gluten-free) experience at Hernandez' Hideaway in Escondido (by Lake Hodges). The night we were there the bartender was celiac! Our waitress had him come to our table, he said "to be honest there is very little here you can eat". What a start, right? *but* I ate cleanly...
  14. Sorry for the delayed response, I was on vacation for a while... There *are* other CT restaurants that use this gluten-free pizza dough, check out the still riding website & see if any are close by. Happy pizza eating
  15. Thanks for the recommendations, I haven't been to either and they both sound wonderful! I do love going to Abbott's in Noank (just West/South of Mystic)for lobster - it's a traditional lobster pound, you stand in line to order & snag a (waterfront) picnic table. BYOB for alcohol. Not sure about their coleslaw (once I had a mild reaction the next...
  16. Had gluten-free pizza from Open Original Shared Link in Westport CT last night - hey, pizza! They are the second commercial building east of Whole Foods, on the same side of the street. crust was from a CT-based nationally distributed company, Open Original Shared Link, apparently they sell to consumers as well as restaurants & there is a list of...
  17. where I live "home fries" are usually cooked on a grill or in a skillet, not deep-fried. But many food service home-fries may not be gluten-free (way before I was gluten-free I had a reaction to home fries and thought maybe it was msg, now I'm pretty sure it was gluten). Basically, for safe dining you have to tell your restaurant & server that you...
  18. Sometimes it works to be there early, if you are first through the line and the condiments are newly opened you can get at 'clean' ones. Or you can bring your own condiments... Have a good time!
  19. Love your labyrinth picture! When you try oats, start with one of the certified gluten-free choices (Bob's Red Mill is one, search this site for other brands). Read the package carefully, many brands have both 'certified' and nothing-special choices. Some celiacs cannot tolerate any oats (Am I remembering someone citing a 3% figure?). Hopefully...
  20. wow, if we didn't already have enough motivation to read the ingredients obsessively! I seem to react even more to barley than to wheat (my aha! moment was a bad and immediate reaction to barley soup). Maybe literally diving into the barley bins (like an indoor open silo) as a kid at my cousins' farm had something to do with this?
  21. My inlaws live nearby in Oneonta, so I have a little Cooperstown info. Restaurants, I ate in July at the Grille (I think that is the name) in the Otesaga hotel - Otesaga is a huge, white, old-fashioned hotel on the lake, just a few blocks from the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Grille is their downstairs casual restaurant, I was able to order & eat cleanly...
  22. pretty sure that it was am 880 WCBS - or it may have been am 1010 WINS. But that's great news about 103. My guess is that GIG was doing some press conference or publicity of some sort.
  23. Me, I worry because I have reacted to foods with "natural flavors" - can't promise if it was a gluten reaction or a separate sensitivity, but most stores have at least one hamburger choice that is really only ground beef with no other 'ingredients'. Rotisserie chickens usually have an ingredient list on the package somewhere, or you can ask the counter...
  24. quick soundbite today from a GIG person (I was in the car so didn't write down the name), radio host promo highlighted 'more and more people are being diagnosed celiac or adopting a gluten-free diet', GIG person mentioned ADD, ADHD, MS, chronic pain, 'auto-immune skin disorders' as examples of people that may be higher risk and/or benefit from a gluten-free...
  25. Marissa 088 - I agree with Amyleigh. You know your body better than the testing lab
