  1. It's like a scene from a celiac horror movie I second suggestions about another fridge, I don't think this fridge can be cleaned enough to be safe. Also please make sure you have your own separate set of utensils, cutting boards, pans and so on. You definitely do not want to share any food surface with your roommate. I don't think it would be...
  2. Actually the original recipe had arrowroot starch in it along with sweet rice flour, and the mayonnaise had kind of starchy flavour, I could really taste starch in it. So I do not add arrowroot starch anymore, xanthan gum and sweet rice flour work OK as thickener. This mayo is definitely less thick than original Hellman's mayonnaise and it has different...
  3. Can you tolerate xantham gum ? If not, you can use guar gum instead of xanthan gum, but I never tried it with guar gum. If you can not tolerate neither xanthan nor guar gum, I guess you can use arrowroot starch instead. I found this recipe somewhere on the internet at the beginning of my diet when I couldn't tolerate raw eggs. For now I have to be on low...
  4. It might be the case. Unfortunately I am very sensitive too. I try not buy products that are produced on the shared equipment. I even reacted to vitamins that were gluten free but produced on the shared equipment.
  5. I know it is wishfull thinking but I do react to products made on shared equipment and it would make my life a lot easier if the label would consists of the following statements: - list of the ingredients in the product with wheat, rye, barly and oats and other allergens in bold font; - statement about whether this product shared equipment or line with...
  6. I e-mailed Natural Factors about their Probiotics in February 2008 and this is what I got: While Natural Factors makes every effort to ensure that our raw materials do not contain gluten, it is possible that some products may. Also, suppliers do change from time to time, so we therefore, recommend that if a person is highly sensitive to gluten, to check...
  7. I wonder if it is Enzymedica. It looks like I reacted to their V-Gest Enzymes, it was in the very beginning of my gluten-free diet. I send them an e-mail asking about the possible cross-contamination and that is what I got for a reply: After processing the enzymes are tested to make sure they are free of any contaminates and and do not contain any gluten...
  8. I can not have dairy either. I didn't try this recipe for sweetened condensed milk, but I might do that some day. Please let me know if you try it and how it turned out. Sweetened Condensed Milk I Equivalent: 1 cup Ingredients: 3 cups Soy or Rice Milk
  9. Sorry to hear you are not getting better yet. I see that you eliminated dairy. Did you cut out soy from your diet? If not, please try to cut it out. There are many people on this forum who had to give up soy before they got better. Apparently soy gives me very similar symptoms as gluten, and my symptoms are not strictly GI related. I can not even tolerate...
  10. Before I stopped dairy, I would get extremely tired after eating it, even lactose-free milk. We used to do lattes (with lactose-free milk) on the weekends and I would get so sleepy and exhausted after it. It was actually well before my gluten intolerance diagnosis. And I did not have GI symptoms from non-lactose dairy. So no, you are not safe if you don...
  11. My husband is gluten intolerant as well (Enterolab test is positive) and I asked him not to eat dairy for 3 months (it was hard, he really loves dairy). So 3 months were up this Saturday and he ate some sour cream and so far so good. He is reintroducing dairy to his diet, but very slowly, starting with sour cream, next week he will start cottage cheese if...
  12. I subscribe to Canadian Geographic magazine and today I got a new issue. On the announcement page there was the following message: "[Canadian Geographic] is printed on a revolutionary and enviromentally friendly paper we call the "wheat sheet". It uses wheat straw, an agricultural byproduct, as an alternative to virgin wood from the boreal forest. The...
  13. I would suggest to stop taking any vitamins or supplements for a week. One week is too little time to notice any vitamin deficiencies but you will know if you are getting glutened from your supplements. That is how I discovered that one of my vitamins (says on the label that there is no gluten, but I guess there is cross-contamination) is giving me problems...
  14. It's possible that on gluten-free diet your villi started healing and therefore antibiotic is absorbed now better than before and that is why you might have more side effects from it. That's what happened to me, I occassionally have to take antibiotic and I took it this September (not being on gluten-free diet) and did not experience any side effects. However...
  15. I live in Canada and unfortunately Canada doesn't have allergen laws like in US. It is not required by law to list wheat or any other allergens here in Canada. Some manufactirers do that voluntarily, unfortunately not all of them. I realize that in US this situation would not be possible. However, this Hero company is based in Switzerland and they do supply...
  16. Hope this story will help someone. I wish I knew that even jam might contain traces of guten, it would save us a lot of money because in the search of the source of gluten / cross-contamination we changed all utensils, all pots and frying pans, most of small appliances, and recently even dinnerware and silverware. My toiletries are gluten-free. I cook almost...
  17. OK, this is now weird. I called Heinz on 02/26/08 and got a reply that their Heinz Chili Sauce with Chunk Peppers is gluten-free. I called Canadian 800-number. Also I have seen information on other websites that say Heinz Chili Sauce is gluten-free. We use Heinz Chili sauce quite a lot, we use it instead of their ketchup. Does anybody else use this sauce...
  18. Thank you very much for this list! I will watch for your post with other information about CPS. Again, thank you, this list will definitely help me.
  19. Eroralaeta, did you hear back from Enzymedica regarding their enzymes and gluten content? Are these enzymes safe for celiacs? I started taking Enzymedica V-gest 4 days ago and it looks like I am getting some gluten somewhere. Could it be the enzymes?
  20. Also Arm & Hammer Sensitive toothpaste is gluten-free, as confirmed by e-mail on 02/05/2008.
  21. I am planning to visit my parents who live in Belarus (ex-USSR, small country in Eastern Europe). I will be there for 3 weeks in May and will stay with my parents and with my parents-in-law. I will not even attempt to go out to a restaurant. Unfortunately Belarus / Russia is a nightmare for celiacs, nobody knows about this disease there at all and of course...
  22. Hello Magdalena Rose, I am not sure about Pizzey, but here is the reply I got from Nature's Path regarding their Nature's Path Organic FlaxPlus Flaxseed Meal: "The Flax facility does not process or use peanuts in any product in the factory. All of the other ingredients considered by the FDA to be allergens ie: wheat, soy, milk, eggs are utilized...
  23. imhungry, Could you please tell me what exactly your GI gave you that masks the symptoms? Is it OTC? It might really help me, I am planning a 3 weeks trip where I KNOW I will be glutened, so my goal is to at least not to feel miserable the whole time.
  24. I am looking for a dairy-free and soy-free butter / margarine. I looked at all margarines in 3 stores nearby, but all of them have either soybean oil or whey powder in the ingredients. Can you recommend any brand of DF/SF margarine? I really hope that such product exists. I guess I should also mention that I live in Canada.
  25. I guess I am another first for this list. I am Belarusian (Belarus is a small country bordering with Russia, Poland and Ukraine and was part of ex-USSR). My dad's family probably has some Polish roots, my mom is Belarusian. I suspect I get it from my mom's side. It is hard to say as in Belarus / Russia nobody knows about this disease. I immigrated to Canada...
