I agree about the insurance industry. They have a lot of influence on healthcare and how it is handled. It surely would save the insurance companies tons of money if Celiac became a standard test, like cholesterol, mamograms, thyroid....any number of things that are common. They could avoid paying for years of useless tests if doctors had an awareness...

I'll chime in too. Still fairly new at this myself. Some people heal quickly and feel better right away. I'm among those who is taking quite a while to feel better....actually I felt worse for a while. It may be that your system is trying to detox, maybe you are going through withdrawal from your old "regular" foods. You may also be developing "other...

flourgirl replied to twinsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi twinsmom! Be sure to let us know how you make out. I guess I'm curious about any new information/technology that is out there in the ear, nose, throat areas. I hope you find some answers and get better soon. -
ARCHIVED I Do Not Know If I Can Handle This
flourgirl replied to bisja's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Bisja. I'm sorry that you are feeling so very bad. I went through many months of just that sort of thing before I was diagnosed, and more. I fully expected that, ok, stop eating gluten and feel great right away. For some people that is the case, but for many we go through just what you are doing. As you read more and more here, you'll see people talk... -
ARCHIVED What To Do For A Headache Because Most Pills Have Gluten
flourgirl replied to bon appetit's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In our house it's just hubby and me. For breakfast and lunch he eats what he wants. Dinner is a meal we share....so we eat EVERY dinner gluten free. We are extremely careful about cleaning up everything that has even a remote chance of contact with gluten. I bet I scrup the countertops at least 3 times a day! And yes...you must for your own sake wash... -
ARCHIVED What's For Dinner?
flourgirl replied to WW340's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We do lots of meals in the crockpot....we either eat leftovers for a few days, or freeze bowls of things for quick to heat up meals. Most of the time I hate the thought of eating anything....but I am getting better about that. We're doing more fish, now that we can grill outside, lots of soups. We like Thai noodles with sauted veggies in peanut sauce.... -
ARCHIVED What To Do For A Headache Because Most Pills Have Gluten
flourgirl replied to bon appetit's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I find that Tylenol works just fine most of the time. Seems I get lots of headaches in the past year or so. If you have any troubles with Dermatitis Herpetiformus, you'll want to avoid anti-inflammatories, as they can aggrivate it. For me, the headaches come on, not only with some foods....but I can feel them coming when I get over tired (which doesn't... -

flourgirl replied to kkv's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi and welcome. What test did you have? If only a blood test...keep in mind that a negative result does not necessarily mean that you don't have it. You will probably need to get a biopsy of your small intestine for villi damage for a conclusive diagnosis. You may want to stay on your regular diet until you know for sure, in order to get accurate test... -
Mornin' Silent Gent. I was diagnosed last Nov., have been going up and down, up and down with healing and getting better, but in the long run gaining much ground. I switched my supplements just a few weeks ago, and find I'm finally starting to have greater energy than I have in a very long time. For some people, the feeling better starts fairly quickly...

Ear Problems Associated With Celiac
flourgirl replied to twinsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm wondering if the steroids could actually be causing some of the ringing or other problems. I had taken them only once and found out the hard way that I'm allergic and react very badly. (I'm hoping that I never come to a point where steroids become the only option ). Anyway.....It was the puncturing of the ears that I consider barbaric. I remember... -
Ear Problems Associated With Celiac
flourgirl replied to twinsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi. I can so relate. I've had ear problems from infancy well into my late 30's. It was normal for me to have 2 or 3 ear infections each year, it often took several courses of antibiotics to clear them up each time. My eustation tube would collapse and fluid would build up inside. I've had tubes, holes punched into the drum, you name it. Did they have... -
I know it's normal to panic over things like this...but try not to until you have a reason. Hard lymph nodes could be nothing more than calcified (I'm not sure that's the right term). I've had that happen several times as I was growing up, and into adulthood. It was caused by infections, often long term infection. They generally go away over time. I...

I wanted to tell you......for me it was a calcuim supplement that was doing me in. I thought I was doing so well avoiding gluten. We stopped dining out because I'd get so panicky about food I didn't prepare myself. I was so sick I wasn't taking any chances. When I couldn't figure out why I was still having so very many sick episodes I started re-checking...

Silent Gent....so sorry to hear about your love. This is why many of us are so careful about EVERYTHING that goes into our mouths, and sometimes we even go into panic mode. Many of us know about how sick a Celiac can be! Rest assured that whatever damage has occured to her digestive system can be reversed. Now you are both well aware of checking everything...

ARCHIVED Is Citracal gluten-free, And Is It A Good Supplement To Use...
flourgirl replied to nikki2008's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The only iron supplements I get now are what is in my multivitamin. I have never been able to take any extra iron....and for a long time took no iron because it gave me constipation....really bad. I do seem to be able to tolerate what I'm taking now. I do hope you can find something that does you some good. -
Is he getting much in the way of iodized salt? This is one of the things that makes my DH flair up. The longer I'm gluten free, the bumps and rash areas are smaller than before. We now use kosher salt, because it has no iodine added. Just a thought.

ARCHIVED Is Citracal gluten-free, And Is It A Good Supplement To Use...
flourgirl replied to nikki2008's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Nikki! As far as I know it's ok. I've taken Calcium w/D for years and am so glad I did. Imust have absorbed at least some of it...but still have Osteo and dental problems.....I just got diagnosed last Nov. I WAS taking a no-name store brand. Even with the gluten-free diet I was still very ill and couldn't figure out why. Re checked everything I put... -
For me the DH flairs with iodized salt and with anti-inflamitories, like ibuprofen. The gluten-free diet will eventually clear up the rash. I had it positively everywhere and for many weeks. I tried bath soaks, and Calamine lotion (there's a clear one that doesn't look so obvious). While it didn't clear anything up it helped a little with the burning...

Hate to tell you, but yes, you will always have Celiac Disease. You can never eat gluten. I'm still healing, too. Had my diagnosis last Nov. I am getting better, but it seems a slow process. I know that you will feel better too. Eventually you won't quite remember the details of how sick you were....only that you were sick. Hopefully that will be enough...

ARCHIVED How Does It Happen ?
flourgirl replied to mxkzach000's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For me, this "major attack" came after what I thought was a really bad case of the flu, which may have been mono....or maybe it was Celiac all along. If that's the case...I can't pinpoint any specific trigger. I DO know that off and on since infancy I've had many "sicknesses"; anemia, infections, migraines, ulcers, "growing pains", rashes, lots of allergies... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Egg Rolls?
flourgirl replied to angielackner's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ooooooooh, that's one of the things I really miss! We used to go out for Chinese buffet.....but no more! I'd be really interested in this too, or any other Chinese dishes that might be gluten-free. Thanks!!! -
Iodine and ibuprofen cause the DH to flair for me. I had a major rash for weeks last summer. Once that finally cleared, I kept getting minor "flairs" that I've since found the cause. I forget where I saw them...but there is a sight that has pictures. good luck!

Did you know that you can have Pizza? Gluten Free Pizza? I have tried the mix to make the dough and added our own toppings. It's not so bad. I'm looking for a recipe for pizza dough that's closer to the "real" thing...eventually I'll find it. Look at it as an adventure....keep trying all the "new stuff" until you build an arsenal of all of the things... -
My thyroid tested as hyper before my diagnosis. No meds until we could pin down what was really going on as to why I was so desperately sick. My last tests showed my thyroid as normal...who knows? Same with my blood pressure....was waaaaay low, still low but now in more normal ranges. I think this disease affects every single process in the body...depending...

Hi there. I haven't a lot of advice to give except to tell you that I've been in the same boat. My rashes did eventaully to away....except for a few eruptions caused by iodized salt and ibuprofen. I was diagnosed finally last Nov., have been on the diet. I had such bad pain under my sternum, stomach, rib cage, it's finally not so bad as it was, but some...
