  1. I have had touble with puffy fingers, and face for years off and on, and I don't even like salt. Recently my Dr. asked me to start putting salt on my foods in the hopes of raising my blood pressure. I still don't add salt because I hate the taste of it. I figure there is more than enough salt in the foods we eat. I have noticed, now that you mention it...
  2. Hi! Just wanted to chime in with my 2 cents. I've been eating Gluten free for a while now. It takes some doing, but I've learned that I have to think about everything that goes in my mouth. Nothing touches the counters, unless they get scrubbed first. Since my husband still eats gluten, we have seperate toasters, seperate PB & J, only clean utensils...
  3. Question....Are you absolutely sure that this is chicken pox? Because you are Celiac...it may be Dermatitis Herpetiformus (sp?). I thought that I had poison Ivy last fall, before my diagnosis.....except that it didn't really look or act like poison ivy, wasn't helped with the usual treatments, and lasted a loooooong time. The blisters burned, and I wanted...
  4. Could be the perp never gets very far anyway, because he can't stop scratching a horrible case of Derm. Hep. So distracted by it that he eventually confesses in the hopes of some relief!
  5. My feeling is that anxiety and panic have a lot to do with the fact that our bodies are under seige. What you absorb or don't absorb are going to have an effect on your hormones, nerve functions, brain function, endocrine system, etc. The wonder would be if you DIDN'T feel some of those unsettling things. I am looking forward to feeling normal.....one...
  6. Wheeee! This is fun! I see lots of the fair skinned types here. but not all of us are such. My Dad's family is Cherokee/Scottish. I resemble that side of the family (in looks, not their health!) Very dark hair, dark dark brown eyes, skin more olive colored (turn bronze in the sun). My mom's side however is English/Irish. I'm convinced that she has...
  7. Check out support groups online for the area. I'm pretty sure there are 2 or 3. I've looked because my family is in the Lake George area, and that was the closest I could find anything. My sister has had to take my neice to Albany for some of the testing. Her doctors are really messing around. 2 Positive blood tests. and they keep saying that they doubt...
  8. Grocery list.....something I started a long time ago (because I blamed the brain fog on just being too busy and couldn't remember anything for more than 2 minutes) .....is a perpetual list that stays on the counter by the fridge. Anytime I am any where near the end of anything it goes on the list. If I'm looking at recipes, what I need goes on the list...
  9. Jaime, I agree that there is something wrong with your Dr. If you have no other alternative, you need to educate yourself and your doctor. I have a copy of "Celiac Disease-A Hidden Epidemic" by Peter H.R. Greene, MD, who is the director of the Celiac Disease Ctr at Comumbia U. I take my book with me to my Dr. visits, with the appropriate pages earmarked...
  10. I would be very hesitant to use anything that interferes with natural acid production of the stomache, simply out of fear of causing more imbalance of bacteria. If you have pain and bloating because of high bacteria (I think a lot of us do), then clamping down on acid production in your belly can cause an even higher incidence of bacterial growth. If you...
  11. Burping? EVERYTHING makes me burp! I feel like such a pig sometimes. Even a glass of water makes me burp. I'm begining to think that I have sensitivity to any food. I'm so tired of feeling sick, feeling like a human helium balloon, like I need to stay near the bathroom 24/7, of feeling so absolutely drained of any energy. Sorry....guess I'm having...
  12. Hi all. I'm new at all of this, too, and am struggling. I thought at first...no big deal. I've never been a food-a-holic anyway, probably because my subconscious knew foods made me sick, but forgot to tell my conscious mind. Anyway, off I went to the grocery store and checked out the health food section (call that way overpriced, mix and mingle all the...
  13. Hi muzz. Glad that you are finding some gluten-free stuff in the stores. At first I didn't think it was all that bad (the diet, I mean), except for the bread! I started making my own. There are some pretty good cookbooks out there. It is a struggle, reading every label. I'm not healing as quickly as I'd hoped, and sometimes I find I'm getting paranoid...
  14. I'm looking for any support groups near the panhandle of West Virginia: within travel distance of Martinsburg, or Winchester, Va. If not, perhaps there are some Celiacs, or any food intolerant people who may want to start a group? I don't know anyone here in the same boat I am....so I AM very greatful for this forum!!!! Thanks for all the help.
  15. Hi Canada! I, too, am new to all of this. I'm not a real food fan (never have been), so I find generally that I don't miss too much. What I miss is feeling healthy. I feel sick if I don't eat, and sicker if I do. I am SO looking forward to feeling "normal"! If you stick mainly to fresh foods, you'll do fine. I read about lots of people with multiple...
  16. Just wondering.....have had lots of trouble with very low blood pressure. Had to do the heart monitor thing because of irregular heartbeat. It was decided that the bouts of tachycardia were nothing to be concerned over, same with the early beats. I'm so tired of being so tired, and so cold all of the time. Is this a normal thing with Celiac, or should...
  17. Hi. Just want to thank all of you for being here, and for all of the comments, advice and support you provide for one another. It's so nice to not feel quite so alone here. I was diagnosed in November, after one lousy summer of getting more and more sick. The symptoms are just too many to list, the tests I've taken also too many. Looking back I see so...
  18. Hi. I am newly diagnosed, about 3 months ago. Am still really struggling with health issues. I'm wondering if there are any support groups in the Martinsburg WV area? If not, how about any locals wanting to start one? I appreciate this forum, knowing there are people out there going through it too.
  19. Not long ago while visiting relatives.....one perpetually teased me with all of the foods they were eating that I couldn't have. He thought he was being funny, and really (I hope) meant no harm. When I finally felt I couldn't take it any more I said, "Gee, I don't offer you RAT POISON, do I? It's the same thing here. These foods are poison to me." It...
  20. Just one more health area to worry about! I actually had a dentist tell me several years ago that I brush my teeth too much!!! I blamed him for the fillings that wouldn't stay in my mouth and for the root canals that failed. In my youth I had great teeth, but they started failing miserably in my 20's. I do take good care of my teeth, but until I was diagnosed...
  21. Finally someone I can identify with. Seems so many heal quickly. I have read that healing can take up to 18 months, depending on age as well as the extent of damage. I fully expected to suddenly feel better than ever, but I've been on the diet for almost 3 months and still having many difficulties. Was starting to worry. Seems to be no end to testing...
  22. Good list to keep handy, and to take to the grocery stores! It's a pain reading all of the labels all of the time....but necessary! Want to also state.....have read of Celiacs that are eating the middle of pies and such. Please, please, please do not expose yourself to cross contamination. No taste, no matter how little is worth taking a chance on...
