  1. I have heard of people being sensitive to lettuce before, but not that it was celiac-related. As a matter of fact, it happens to my fiance... but just iceberg. That was actually quite new to me... I mean how could lettuce send you to the bathroom? I think that if it's not washed properly, can cause issues. And the fish thing... perhaps he's referring...
  2. Hello Pam, I'm embarrassed to say that even though I'm right here in Richmond, I haven't had enough experience with the restaurants yet to help you personally. I'll call the Richmond GIG tomorrow and see if they recommend any that aren't already listed on their site. Enjoy your stay here! Gretchen
  3. Yum, that sounds delicious! I'm going to have to try some chicken fingers soon (they're my favorite gluten-full food). They're so my favorite that we'll go to fancy restaurants and I'll get those over anything else! Thank you for sharing!!! LOL.. I realized that I'm always replying to your posts! Gretchen
  4. Jill, Any word about your brother yet? Gretchen
  5. I can understand your embarrassment on the issue.... gastro-intestinal problems are not the easiest thing thing to talk about... especially face-to-face with someone. You'd be amazed at how compassionate and caring of a response you'd receive from your doctor... probably because he would be able to help rule out some things for you and offer pro-active treatment...
  6. Anna, Thanks for the site info! Whoa on the "E" stuff! When I have a few minutes, I really need to read all of that! Gretchen
  7. Here's some more info on the test: Open Original Shared Link A slurry of gluten powder in physiological saline was introduced into the rectum, and biopsies taken before and at 2 h or 4 h after the challenge were examined immunohistochemically by computerized image analysis. Cell counts were analysed by logistic regression, and the best equations were...
  8. Deanna, I don't know much about this test called the rectal challenge... but, might be worth asking your doctor. I have some info on a previous post about it (linked below) Apparently you don't need to be ingesting gluten for an accurate test. Yes... I can understand the challenges in the need for a diagnosis... I can see why in your case, you'd want...
  9. Alexolua, I have read that encouraging a patient to go gluten-free before diagnois is discouraged because of the difficulty of receiving a diagnosis later in life. I personally consider an auto-immune response to gluten as intolerance... irregardless of what condition might be causing it. A year after my Igg was elevated and I didn't go gluten-free...
  10. Welcome Gail! Here's a quick-start guide that might be of some help! There are many helpful posts here... I know there might be a lot and seem overwhelming, but you can always do a search for certain products (like bar-b-q sauce or candy) when you have an opportunity. Also, Feel free to ask whatever questions you might have and we'll be happy to help...
  11. Alexolua, I don't know if we could ever have enough of these questions, to be honest with you. That's how I see it too! Gretchen
  12. Charlotte, Have you consided or are a part of a local support group? I don't know if they're close to you or not, but they might be worth checking out: Missouri Tri Lakes Celiac Support Group (Kimberling City) B. Hicks, Contact 417.739.2703 honedu@mchsi.com Hang in there. Any inconvenience to your family is certainly less of a price than...
  13. Yes... speaking of gluten in pet food... I'm just glad that dogs and cats aren't celiac (that we know of)... I couldn't think of a single brand that would be safe. Thank you for mentioning it, as I would not have even considered being that a contamination source! We have a mini-zoo.. cat, dog & parrot!! I'll admit that I did a double-take when I...
  14. celiac3270, Speaking of ice cream... my fiance' works for Bruster's (lucky me!) and got an e-mail from a woman inquiring about the gluten-free status last week. That was pretty cool, actually! But, the bad news is that there is too high a risk for cross-contamination for it to be considered gluten-free. At least that's what he told me. I could imagine...
  15. Monica, I was told my Igg @ 33 (normal < 20) was a false positive and I believed it. A year later, my Igg has elevated even more and my Iga is now a part of the story. I would have to say to listen to your body... ultimately, you know your body best. Conditions that cause your intestines to be more permeable (leaky gut) can cause your Igg...
  16. Good for you, Denise! Hey, my Igg was the only thing elevated for a while (it was only 33 and normal was under 20) and I felt miserable and knew my body was telling me something was definitely wrong. I didn't do anything about it then, because well... because of lack of suport from my doctor(s) and because I was told not to worry. Let's see... a year later...
  17. Deanna, My heart goes out to you... I know it must be hard. I found an old post on the internet about this subject and thought I'd post it. Good luck and I hope you get your answer soon! When is your endo? Do you have an appointment yet? Gretchen Open Original Shared Link Subject: how long must gluten challenge last? It is often necessary...
  18. Maybe it's the coffee. I was fine with it until I had a colonoscopy (go figure).. now I can barely drink it at all! Coffee can be harsh.
  19. Wow, Tiffany.. that is amazing!! Good luck through your trial and error!! I'll be thinking about you. Gretchen
  20. That's where we're going on our honeymoon in November (we're big kids)! I had no idea that they would cater so much to dietary concerns! That's world-class service for you. Thanks for the suggestions Richard, I'm going to have to check out their rolls & waffles!! Gretchen
  21. My understanding is that if you had an allergy to wheat, the doctor could prick you for it. The antibody that he/she would be looking for is IGE... which is a different reaction than intolerance (IGG & IGA). They've still got to prick you for that too... but for some reason they want a whole lot more blood. I believe some doctors are pushing...
  22. I don't know.. but, I have multiple (at least 6) fractured costal ribs. I was squeezed when playing basketball when I was younger. I always thought that it was pretty strange how easily the broke. But, I've never broken a bone!
  23. I have a (NEW) doctor's appointment on 10/8... this time with a celiac specialist. I'm going to ask for this test. I'll let you know what I find out, but it might be a few months. I'd opt for this over the endoscopy anyday!! Especially for more accurate results!!
  24. Licel, I'll give you the Gretch's dictionary definition on the Celiac vs. Sensitivity/Intolerance. ... but, I don't know if it will help. Celiac disease & Gluten Intolerance are pretty much the same... however, celiac is where there is evidence (visually by eye and/or microscope) that there is damage to the small intestine due to a protein...
  25. Your IGA is positive.. and you're on a gluten-free diet! I'm sorry, but if any of the antibodies show up it's worth investigating. Health professionals will not give you a celiac diagnosis (usually) unless your tests point to it 100%... but, it doesn't mean that you're not gluten intolerant... or that celiac won't develop later. If I were you, I'd find...
