  1. I wouldn't give up apricots, but maybe just eat less of them and see if you still are having problems. Many people do have issues with stone fruits, but I think it's usually a bladder issue, not an intestinal thing. My father in law can't eat any fruits with stones or seeds because of his gall bladder. But, regarding the hidden gluten issue, I was just...
  2. There was a post in the "Lunch Ideas" forum in this same catagory that stated that the dannon drinkables seemed to be gluten free. Also I think the Cascade fruit juice sweetened yogurt is also gluten-free. Try not to get too down in the dumps, there are a lot of really good gluten-free products out there, and you might be amazed at what you can do when...
  3. While I have never had to call arrowhead mills yet and talk to anyone, so far I haven't really found that many of their products to be very good anyway. So I usually don't buy from them. Here are a few websites that are dedicated to gluten-free foods and products: kinnikinnick.com - my favorite, 10$ shipping no matter how much you buy glutenfreepantry...
  4. I dig this new board! I was a little bummed at the loss of the old info, but I also realized how much things have changed in the last few years and that a large majority of that info needed updating anyway. There are foods and products on the market now that we had previously discussed as being safe or unsafe that have now changed and it will be really good...
  5. The "forbidden List" on this sites homepage says that Brewer's yeast is not cool... I use SAF instant yeast, they sell it at www.missroben.com which is a gluten-free online store that has some pretty good stuff. You need to keep it refrigerated though.
  6. No Problem, just keep in mind that the more you play around with your recipes the better they will get. For some things, I increase or decrease amounts depending on how long I want to cook it for or how crumbly or chewy I want it to be. Practice makes perfect! Some tips (in my experience): More cornstarch makes it crumble more More tapioca makes...
  7. Hi All! I use San-J also, it has the best flavor I think. I have a gal in one of my gluten-free cooking classes that says that the Amino Acid one is gluten-free and really good. But to give you one more option, LaChoy brand is also gluten free, but it's not as good as San-J in my opinion. Also, San-J has a gluten free and low sodium variety which is...
  8. Hi All, just wanted to let you all know that I just posted a recipe for some really yummy snack bars in the recipes section. Check it out!
  9. Hi again! I just tried expirementing with a snack bar for my son and it turned our great. I know there is still some contraversy with using oats, but I feed them to my son with no problem and I know that lots of you also eat them, so here you go! Oatmeal snack bars 1 tsp cinnamon 3/4 C rice flour 1/2 C tapioca flour 1/4 C potatoe starch 1 tsp xanthan...
  10. Hi all, thanks for your supportive comments. I never really thought of sleep habits as being a hereditary thing, but now I wonder. I have been an insomniac almost as long as I can remember. I have not been diagnosed as a celiac, yet, but my son was diagnosed at 1 year and has never in his life slept more than a few hours at a time. He used to have night...
  11. Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone else has any problems getting their kids to sleep through the night. My son, who is 3 years old, still wakes up 3 and 4 times a night, nearly every night. He has been gluten free for 2 years and has no other issues, except the sleeping or lack of. He doesn't always nap during the day, but they don't seem make any difference...
  12. Thanks Sarah, I'll check it out!
  13. Here you go: Bette Hagman's Featherlight Mix (makes 12 Cups of mix) 4 C rice flour 4 C tapioca flour 4 C Cornstarch 4 Tbs potato flour Bette Hagman's Gluten Free Mix (makes 12 Cups of mix) 8 C rice flour 2 2/3 C potato starch 1 1/3 C Tapioca flour I miss typed earlier and didn't catch it until you quoted me, but the mixture that I use for...
  14. Oops, I didn't notice the date on it, sorry. I was caught off guard by all the loud print and then when I went to the Mi-Del website it was out of service so I guess I thought the worst. I'll try them now. Thanks.
  15. Open Original Shared Link Hey guys, just an FYI, I was searching for the Mi-Del website to get some crackers for my son, and this alert popped up saying that there is undeclared gluten in their cookies. Sorry to burst the bubble.
  16. Tahini is like peanut butter, but made with sesame seeds instead. It's usually found in the natural foods section with the organic peanut butter. It's pretty good, you can get toasted or raw, and either will work for this recipe, but I prefer the toasted kind. I don't want to say what substitutions will work for Sarah's recipe, but when I make my hummus...
  17. Yup, here is one I use for everything from fried chicken to shrimp and eggplant. 1/4 C rice flour 1/4 C tapica starch 1/4 C cornstarch 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp (or more to taste) garlic powder dash sesame oil water or club soda enough to make a thick batter It's really easy and and turns out great chicken, my family doesn't even know it's gluten...
  18. Hello, I posted a cinnamon cookie recipe in the Gluten-Free Recipes section, and there is a good recipe for a white chocolate cheesecake someone posted not too long ago too. That might be a good place to check out on a regualr basis. Also the baking section often has recipes too. Good Luck, Kathleen

    ARCHIVED Mouth Sores

Okay guys, here is my miracle cure... actually two miracle cures depending on where the sore is. If you have a sore on the inside of your mouth, the best thing I have found to cure it in a day or less is "Alum", it's a spice that is white and powdery, like baking soda. I will warn you though, it makes all the infection seep out so it gets a little nasty...
  20. For many celiacs, a combinations of disorders can come along with the celiac disease. Yeast intolerance, dairy intolearance and more. Yeast is not a gluten containing product, and has no harmful effects on most celiacs, unless you have and intolerance or allergy to it.
  21. Here is one from Bette Hagman's dessert book, I made a couple of minute changes but it works extremely well: Dream Pastry 1/2 C tapioca flour 1/2 C cornstarch 1/4 C potato starch 1 C sweet rice flour 1 tsp xanthan gum 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp sugar 1/2 C butter (original recipe calls for margarine, but it has too high a water content and can cause...
  22. In my expirences, I have also met a few people who were gluten-free but not celiacs, maybe because they had a loved one with celiac disease or because they were a meat and potatoes kind of person and just never really had breads or cereals. Quite a few of them mentioned having reactions when re-introducing gluten into their diets. I guess the easiest way...
  23. This is a very, very good question. I am far from an expert on blue cheeses, but I will say that I use a gorgonzola blue, made by a company called Bel... something. I'm sorry I don't know the full brand. But, the blue vien is from an inoculated enzyme, rather than actual bread mold. I am not a celiac, but my son is and I teach gluten-free cooking classes...
  24. Unfortunately, there are no substitutes that will work straight across the board for regular wheat flour, at least none that I know of. Rice flour is the most widely used in combination with the xanthan gum, but you often get better results using a combination of several flours. My best suggestion is to mix your own flous and store them ready to use....
  25. This is a recipe I created so that my hubby and son (who is the gluten-free one in our house) could enjoy their favorite cinnamon cookies together. Since then I have used it in my gluten-free cooking classes. It's really very easy and so yummy. It can be modified to chocolate by replacing the cinnamon with cocoa powder and the cinnamon chips with chocolate...
