  1. Yes, my 7yo had awful morning breath before he was diagnosed. I had to get him in the habit of brushing his teeth as soon as he got up b/c he would come sit in my lap in the morning and I couldn't stand it. I don't know really HOW they are related, but I'm pretty sure they are. His has gotten better.
  2. So I'm missing the EMA then? How important is that? Testing ranges, yes. For the tTG: <5 - negative 5-8 - equivocal >8 - positive Mine was <3 For the IgG and IgA: <11 - negative 11-17 - equivocal >17 - positive Mine were <3 and 5, respectively No range for the Reticulen Antibody test
  3. I got my copy of my blood work that was done. I will say that I would never have considered getting the tests if my son were not diagnosed, and I have few GI problems, so I did the test more to rule out celiac than confirm. But after hanging out here for awhile, I'm all paranoid that I didn't get the right tests, or shouldn't necessarily trust these results...
  4. Ah yes, I was new, sitting at the other end of the table, short hair and a blue tank top.
  5. Hi, I was at the meeting last night, were you there? I'm in Garner, btw.
  6. I have Ka-me duck sauce here and the ingredients have NO question marks to me, but I'm used to double checking EVERYTHING and I can't find info. The ingredients are: sugar water pineapples peaches modified potato starch salt vinegar chili powder xanthan gum Would you eat it?
  7. I agree. My sister was diagnosed with cancer that she knew would most likely be terminal in 2003. Some time later we were at a gathering with friends and one lady made an awful complaint about getting old. My sister responded with, "It's better than the alternative". I've never seen someone shut her mouth so fast once it sunk in.
  8. Okay, I can't find garfava or sorghum locally. I have rice flour, potato starch, tapioca flour/starch, flaxseed meal, and Arrowhead Mills all purpose wheat free baking mix. Any recommendations for some substitutions there? I really want to try this out and I can't get to the HFS or place an order for another week or two.
  9. I emailed with the owner of Rosie's Plate. They are not a restaurant, more of a takeout type of place where you order your food the day before and perhaps would pick it up on your way home after work kind of thing. I was a bit disappointed, but it is still a great resource! Twisted Fork is a really good ,medium/upscale restaurant, I've been a couple...
  10. That's a tough one. I agree, I think you have your answer. While we went the route of biopsy for my 7yo recently, I'm not sure I would take the same step for a 3 yo, I don't know. My initial reaction would be to not do it, partly because I do believe the "gold standard" for diagnosis will be different by the time your son is a teen, and partly because...
  11. I agree, I was not happy to see the word stupid appear, I never meant to imply that anyone was stupid. I do however stand by my initial assertion that people in this country really should be more aware of what their food is made of. I knew what white flour was long before I had a clue that some people were intolerant of it or had ever heard the term celiac...
  12. Up to this point, the internet has been my primary resource and will probably continue to be so. I do have Wheat Free, Worry Free by Danna Korn, and I have found it valuable. I'm a book kinda gal, and I'm trying to decide which one to buy next, another good reference book or a cookbook. I've considered the Triumph Guides for groceries and dining out, they...
  13. we eat sushi all the time, it's my son's favorite! You do have to stay away from the imitation crab meat, tempura, and most soy sauces if you are eating out, but most other ingredients in sushi rolls are fine. We make our own at home regularly, but when we do go out, we bring our own soy sauce and the place we go has been really great about our special...
  14. I apologize, I didn't mean to offend with my choice of words. I freely admit that I am ignorant about a lot of things and have never taken it as an insult, unless of course someone accuses me of being ignorant about something I feel like I know something about, LOL. What would you propose as a better term?
  15. that was kind of my point. I'm ignorant about a lot of things, including mandolins! But I think that the general population should have a basic awareness of what they are putting in their body every day. Just my .02.
  16. Yeah, I kind of meant that maybe "silent" celiac perhaps isn't as silent as we think, that maybe there are signs that even those who are aware of the condition might not recognize as possible celiac. Even after having done the basic research, I never would have considered that my issues might be related to celiac or gluten, mostly b/c they come and go and...
  17. Not sure if that title got the point of my post across, LOL. Okay, so my son was diagnosed celiac recently after 3 years of me suspecting it. He had "classic" celiac symptoms, but they were relatively mild and many were the long term variety, ie. growth issues, etc. So I've decided that we will get the whole family the blood work done at a minimum...
  18. I'll be honest and I'm not trying to be snarky AT ALL, I promise. I can definitely understand not understanding celiac, I'd venture that most people, at least in the US, have never even heard of it. What I don't understand, and perhaps is a result of being raised by back to nature hippie type parents, is not knowing where your food comes from. I can't...
  19. I only have a moment, but I wanted to chime and say that with the exceptions of the defiance and the bed wetting, your daughter's history sounds almost identical to my son's. I told his ped. I suspected celiac when he was 4 and was told I was overreacting, he was "normal", right after they told me he would be 5'10" when he grew up, and no man in my husband...
  20. Since DS has his diagnosis, I feel like it is reasonable to get the family tested. I've always had on and off digestive issues that I've attributed to stress, so I'm going first, Anyway, I've heard the horror stories and read enough here to be nervous, not to mention my own experience with fighting to get DS diagnosed. I'm afraid I'm going to go...
  21. I've only been at this a few months, and I've already heard some doozies. I thought it would be fun to share your favorite comments from the uneducated masses, so to speak. My two faves so far: From my FIL: "Cobblestone Mill Sourdough Bread is gluten free." I don't know what ingredient list HE was looking at! Apparently, he has a wheat allergy but...
  22. no input on comparisons, but I'm at TJs on a regular basis and also ship regularly as I run my own home business, I'd be glad to help you out if you want. Just PM me if you would be interested.
  23. How do you do it? I'm primarily talking about people who enter your child's life who need to know. Waitresses, teachers, caregivers, whatever. The topic came up last night because I told a waitress that he had a wheat allergy, so it was vital that he get his burger with NO BUN. My son questioned my choice of words because he's heard me explain to other...
  24. I've googled all over, LOL, and can't seem to find an active Celiac or gluten intolerance group in this area. Anything would be fine, but I'm particularly looking for more parents of kids with celiac or GI to hook up with. The internet is great, but I'd love to have a real conversation or even a cup of coffee with someone else who "gets it". Thanks
  25. Thank you. I had googled it last night but the only hit I got was the article in Natural Living magazine, which I now need to go find!
