My daughter, 19, has been sick since April. Her first symptoms were hot flashes, weight gain (now up to 50 lbs.), shortness of breath, not sleeping (have tried Ambien, Lunestra, Rozeram) even with the pills (currently waiting to get in sleep study). Additional symptoms now include: rapid pulse/heart rate (EKG normal) and chest pain. She's had many blood tests...

ARCHIVED Daughter Freshman In College
lauriel234 replied to wildwood's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We went through the same thing last year at Penn St. A few things we did that made it easier: ask them if they have room in the dining hall to store some extra food - this way you can send more at one time & she won't have a problem with storing the stuff. Also, see if they would let you keep a toaster (maybe they would even purchase it for you) there... -

My daughter has been accepted at the following colleges: Shippensburg U., York, Rowan, Stockton, Penn State, Bloomsburg. Does anyone know any celiacs at these schools? They have been very helpful on the phone, but it is always better to directly talk to someone who has personal experience.

ARCHIVED I Need Your Top Ten Dining Out Questions/concerns
lauriel234 replied to tiffjake's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Besides all the concerns that everyone else is listing, ask them why they can't have dedicated fryers for french fries. My daughter really misses being able to eat fries in most places. -
My daughter has eaten at Johnny Rockets a few times. They have a gluten free menu online. She's had the fries and grilled chicken with no problems. Just call & double check that they have a dedicated fryer at that location.

Has anyone tried to make 'pigs in a blanket'? (little hotdogs with a roll wrapped around them). Do you think that mix for chebe bread would work? I haven't tried it, but just thinking. My daughter really misses them, good for snacking or a quick lunch). They'd also be good for appetizers at a party

I found out this weekend that the Ruby Tuesday's in Stroudsburg, PA has gluten free french fries every Saturday. They clean out the fryer & change the oil. My daughter had a great dinner, grilled shrimp & fries. They also have a good salad bar. I'm going to email them & see why they can't keep it like that all the time & also see if that...

ARCHIVED Cereal?
lauriel234 replied to justme's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I happened to look at a box of Kix the other day and I think if you can tolerate oats, they're wheat free. My daughter had some with no problem - she eats matzo balls made from oats too. Check them out. -

We're staying on the Canadian side. I went online, looks like a lot to choose from. What are your favorite places? Thanks for the info. Laurie.....

Does anyone know of any gluten free restaurants in Niagra Falls area? Am planning a trip at end of August and would love to take my daughter to some different places. Also, are there any hotels that are gluten free friendly?

Has anyone eaten at Mama's Italian Restaurant in Oakdale, NY? Am thinking about making the long drive this weekend (1 1/2 hr.) and want some info first. Any recommendations on what's good?

I remember reading a few months ago about a new research trial either at University of Maryland or Columbia University. Now I can't find any info at either site. Does anyone have any info about any research trials going on?

ARCHIVED Had A Good Dining Experience At Chevy's Mexican Restaurant
lauriel234 replied to luvs2eat's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
My daughter likes Chevy's too. She eats the chips and salsa and we get the steak fajitas and she just eats the steak. I don't think the rice is gluten free and she doesn't like beans. We've been there several times and she hasn't had a problem. -
ARCHIVED Real People Cereal

I don't know where you live, but in NJ/NY area you could check out Pathmark - I think their own brand of 'corn pops' are gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Mcdonald's French Fries Not Safe?
lauriel234 replied to pixiegirl's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I just read this posting about McDonalds fries and am very upset. My daughter has been eating the fries almost everyday for lunch. I just sent McDonalds an email trying to find out when this change occurred. I think we should all send letters and/or emails or call them to let them know how upset we are about this. I also asked them why there was no press... -
We take my daughter's wheat free soy sauce with us and the restaurant is nice enough to make fried rice with it or some type of brown sauce if she wants it. There are a few brands out there - San J; LaChoy; Shop Rite.

My daughter sees Dr. Elena Treskova, St. Joseph's Hospital, Paterson, NJ. (also has a couple other offices around this same area). She also might be able hook you up with an adult gi.
