  1. Thanks for the info, very helpful. I'll check with him next time I see him. I think our labs just have one panel that they run for celiac, I'm not sure that they do the AGA IgA test. I'll find out. I hope that I don't have another autouimmune disease going on. Maybe my intestines are just taking some time to heal.
  2. Hi everyone. I need to ask the experts on this board. I asked my doc (who I adore, by the way, and never would have been diagnosed if he had not suggested celiac) to run a celiac panel on me, as I am still having occasional *gluten* symptoms, and would like to rule out that I am still accidentally ingesting gluten. I have been gluten-free for one year...
  3. Happy birthday and may God bless you today!

  4. Hi there. I haven't been on the boards for a while, but I am one of those who recently had the biopsy with NO meds. As someone said earlier in this thread, it was unpleasant but not painful. By the way, I'm Canadian too. Congrats on getting the biopsy within 5 weeks! Mine took 5 months. Anyway, the reason I went with no meds was 1) my twins were...
  5. Hi, I haven't read the entire post, but just wanted to let you know (as my name implies) that I have twins, too. A boy and a girl, 15 months old. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message! Having twin babies is HARD work. Congrats!!!
  6. Hi! I'm glad to hear that you are aware that the gene testing can't diagnose anything. From what I understand, gene testing is good to "rule out" celiac. If you don't have DQ2 or DQ8, than it is unlikely you will develop celiac (I'm not getting into gluten intolerance because I don't know enough about the genetics). Where this would seem useful would...
  7. Well, I'm probably in the minority, but here is my take... I was in the exact same position as you. I had positive EMA and TTG, my family doc told me it was celiac for sure. There was a 5 month wait to see a GI and have a biopsy. I wasn't sure what to do, but every celiac website said it was very important to get a biopsy done. Then I asked my question...
  8. Ok... so it is looking very likely that we will be travelling to my inlaws for Christmas. I told my Mom-in-law that we would give her lots of advance notice if we're coming, as she knows I'm celiac. She was actually the first person I called when my blood tests were positive and I was freaking out. We're quite close. Still... I feel horrible to ask...
  9. Agreed. Some doctors do follow that line of thinking. My GI did. He said if I was negative there would be no reason to test my children. ????!!! Luckily I have a great GP, who, as of yesterday is watching my son for celiac since I am celiac. And I did test positive on the biopsy as it turned out. However, it sounds like your GI is pretty much on...
  10. I had a positive EMA and TTG and I also wondered whether I, as an adult, should biopsy. I understand that it is different as a adult vs a child but... I think your GI is right. I'm sure people will disagree with me, but the only way to be sure of celiac is a positive biopsy plus positive bloodwork. I didn't think having a positive biopsy would matter...
  11. I tested positive on my bloodwork in May, went gluten free for two months, and then did a gluten challenge for two months prior to my endoscopy. Everyone is different, but I can say in my case, I don't respond immediately to gluten. It took me about a week of eating gluten every day to respond with gastro symptoms. In fact (silly me) I started to question...
  12. I've been reading this topic with a lot of interest, and decided to dive in with my 2 cents... I think this is an important topic to discuss. First of all, I think if someone suspects that they might have celiac, they should get the appropriate celiac blood panel done rather than try and self diagnose. I also support having the biopsy done. There...
  13. Wow - hairspray? Can we really react to that? I hadn't even thought about non-food items. I'm having a hard enough time convincing my hubby that yes, I may have reacted to Thanksgiving dinner because he cooked with brown sugar that once had a slice of bread in it (for freshness). I have a bit of OCD, so I'm really trying to be careful with gluten but...
  14. Hi.. I just had a question because I had a similar endoscopy experience. I still haven't heard the results from the lab analysis yet (see my GP next week for that)... but the GI said he could tell that my villi were flat as well just by looking, and that my stomach was inflamed, and to start gluten free right away. My question is - does anyone know...
  15. Just wondering why you are avoiding fruit? There is no gluten in fruit, you just need to avoid wheat, rye, barley, and oats (and ingredients made from them) in order to be gluten free. Let me know if I am misunderstanding you.
  16. I did a gluten challenge for my biopsy. I was initially diagnosed by my GP, via very positive bloodwork. Here in Canada, there are song long wait times to see specialists, especially GI docs, so I had a four month wait before I could have my biopsy. My doctor suggested I go gluten free as long as I could, since I was feeling much better on the diet, and...
  17. Hi Tracy! I'm in Calgary, too, funnily enough. I am new to the forum, and new to celiac, but I do consider myself to be an uber-researcher so I'll answer your questions as best as I can. I'm sure someone else will reply as well. As far as the weight issue goes - I've been overweight my whole life, since I was a toddler. I've yo-yo'd back and forth...
  18. No, they give you sedation by IV, not general anesthetic - they need you to be able to respond to their requests. Feel free to ask me any other questions you might have about it.
  19. I also wanted to add, from what I have read, is that while some of the tests are very specific (the tTG and EMA), they won't be positive until you have severe damage in your intestine. I think I read somewhere that a positive tTG correlates with total villous atrophy, meaing you have no villi left. In most diseases, they don't wait for your organ to be...
  20. I just wanted to let you know that you don't have to be sedated to have the biopsy done. I know, I did mine completely drug free. Was it a pleasant experience? No, but it wasn't painful and it can be done. I did it without drugs because I have twin babies at home and didn't want to be "out of it" after the procedure. If I could do it again, I would take...
  21. Hi everyone. Has anyone else had an experience with GAINING weight after going gluten free, especially those who were heavy to begin with? I have struggled with my weight all my life. I lost 70 lbs in 2002 - kept most of it off, but then started gaining again even on a relatively low cal diet - I had gained back 30 lbs before I got pregnant, and then I...
  22. Wow, I have to say everyone has given me a lot to think about... When I asked my doctor if the tests were screening or diagnostic, his reply was, "you have celiac disease, full stop.". So, in his mind, I am diagnosed, I guess. He did say he wanted me to go ahead with the biopsy, but it was ultimately my choice. One thing he mentioned was the increased...
  23. Hi everyone. I've done some reading on the board, and from the looks of it, I am very lucky to have a excellent family doctor who knows about celiac. I've basically been anemic on and off since I was 15 (I'm 34 now) , all my prior doctors just chalked it up to being female. I had some gastro symptoms, but I was too embarassed to tell my old doctors about...
