ARCHIVED Do I Say I'm Gluten Intolerant Or Celiac?
samcarter replied to Terbie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well, my EmA test came back negative (but the clueless doctor didn't run any of the other celiac tests; in retrospect I'm mad at myself for not insisting for the whole panel). After going off gluten I felt so much better. Then i had some lapses and feel horrible again. Right now I don't have the time or money to hunt down a doctor who will do all the tests... -
Oh, yeah, the dark circles! I have those, bad. Since I was a kid. My mom had them (as well as psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis, and gallbladder problems), and hers were very, very bad. Like black eyes, almost. Hm, that's food for thought. I had very clear skin as a teen, too.

ARCHIVED Gluten And Sugar Cravings
samcarter posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Has anyone noticed their cravings for sugar increasing after a glutening episode? I wonder if this is due to malabsorption/mineral imbalance, or the gluten creating kind of an addiction situtation. All I know is, after being glutened yesterday I am going nuts for sugar today. Definitely not good for me. -
ARCHIVED My Observed Symptoms After Eating Gluten
samcarter replied to samcarter's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Kitt---I think our mothers were separated at birth. As a kid I was so lethargic that I just wanted to sit and read all the time. I can't tell you how many times I heard, "It must be NICE to be able to just sit and read whenever you want!" She didn't understand that I didn't have the energy. I was very depressed as a child--i have memories of just sobbing... -
Good job quitting! I know it is hard. My grandmother started smoking at age 14, and by the time we kids were old enough to ask her to quit (we found it hard to visit or be around her because of our asthma) she said she was "too old to quit now". She did quit in her mid-80s, though, when a doctor informed her she was developing emphysema.

Does anybody else have these skin conditions in conjuction with gluten issues? For the past several years I've had what one doctor claimed was "occlusive acne" (but it never gets really better with acne meds, I still have the bumps on my forehead). Very small bumps, like a rash, and the "pimples" don't come to a head. They become scabby, almost, and little...

Yes, it's like a hangover for me--I can barely drag myself out of bed, it's hard to even open my eyes, and I just feel like I could lay on the sofa all day. And THEN the diarrhea starts up. I never get that right after a glutening, it's always the next morning.

ARCHIVED Headaches
samcarter replied to samcarter's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh yes! Used to be, back in my wild youth, that ibuprofen or Tylenol would take care of a headache, no problem. Now if i get one after eating wheat, it stays and like you said, painkillers can't touch it. -
ARCHIVED My Observed Symptoms After Eating Gluten
samcarter replied to samcarter's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for the responses. My husband wants me to eat gluten free, because he sees how much better I feel (he even commented that I seem "more like myself" lately!). I know I should be eating gluten to get any possible positives. On the one hand, if i do have celiac, I really want that positive diagnosis so I can use that when people say, "Eh, you're... -
ARCHIVED Surreptitious gluten-free Dining
samcarter replied to Voix's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, I admit that I am not very good at this yet. We only go to one particular restaurant, once a week, for brunch. I have looked at the menu online and so far have ordered an entree that had no outward signs of gluten in it (no bread, croutons, pasta, et cetera). Last time I had a delicious salad and felt great all day. Still, the mashed potatoes the... -
ARCHIVED My Observed Symptoms After Eating Gluten
samcarter posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So, I cut gluten out for a whole week. Felt pretty darn good--I asked my husband, "So do most people go to the bathroom without it being painful?" He said, 'Why have you never TOLD me about this?" Uh...I just thought it was normal to cramp and poop at the same time. Anyway, today I started doubting and wondering, Am I just being dramatic and difficult... -
ARCHIVED Headaches
samcarter replied to samcarter's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, i glutened myself on purpose, because I still just keep doubting myself. A small bite of leftover pie last night, and a leftover piece of pizza this morning. I woke up with a small headache, thought it was a "need coffee" headache, but it didn't go away. Now the headache is solidly above my eyes and wraps around to above my ears. Also, i'm having... -
I'm B+. I don't put a lot of credence in the blood type diet, though. The fact that there are more o-type people here on the board could simply be chalked up to the fact that it's the most common blood type. 37% of the general population has it. Statistically speaking, of course any segment of the population would have more O-type individuals than the...

I was wondering how many of you get headaches after eating gluten, or have had lots of headaches before getting your diagnosis. Just wondering if it's "all in my head' as a symptom, or is related to something else. I hate doubting myself like this.

From my brief experience: He asks, "Is this something that just recently started? Because that's not celiac." he only runs ONE of the tests in the celiac panel because "it's cheaper and it's the most sensitive anyway." He calls celiac disease "sprue". (This just shows how out of date he is with the latest literature.)

Wow, as clueless as my GP is about celiac and testing, he at least calls to give me results of any tests. I still have to request copies of the lab results, but I at least get a call without an appointment scheduled.

I had written a post asking why anybody would take up smoking again, but I deleted it. I just want to say that if you are worried about glutens in cigarettes...you're worried about the wrong thing.

ARCHIVED What Are Some Of Your Favorite Snacks?
samcarter replied to Blessings's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I love Kind bars. I think that's what they're called. The Nut and Fruit delight is just that--delicious and good to have on hand when I'm at coffee hour after church where there is nothing gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Wow, People Really Don't Get It...
samcarter replied to samcarter's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The party was fine. There was a spinach salad that was safe (asked about the ingredients), potato chips and gluten free hot dogs. Of course, my friend asked if I had tried the pasta salad. I just kind of looked at her and she said, "Oh...that's right." -
ARCHIVED Wow, People Really Don't Get It...
samcarter replied to samcarter's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
And now I am really dreading the neighborhood block party tonight. There will be food I cannot eat, so I will just eat a Larabar or something and drink my water while peope say, "Haven't you tried the pasta salad yet?" or "Do you want one of these brownies?" We're supposed to bring a dessert; my husband will just pick something up at the store, because... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Avon & Quaker
samcarter replied to Rindy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You may need to call Quaker and ask if they process the cornmeal in the same facility as the oats. If the oats cannot be guaranteed gluten free (the reason oats are problematic is they are often grown and processed near wheat, and thus get cross-contaminated) due to their processing, then you may want to look for cornmeal from a guaranteed gluten-free facility... -
ARCHIVED Hair Loss
samcarter posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So today I was cleaning the bathroom where I usually blow dry my hair. As usual, I ended up cleaning a mat of (my rather long) hair from the floor. I mentioned it to my husband, and he said, "Since we've been married I've noticed a LOT of hair in our bathrooms from you." I thought it was normal for people to lose hair every day. It is, right? He said, ... -
ARCHIVED Bob's Red Mill gluten-free Pancake Mix
samcarter posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was leery of trying a gluten-free pancake mix; I tried one (I think it was Hodgson's Mill) a long time ago, and it was horrible--tasted like beans. Bob's Red Mill has sorghum flour instead, and it is divine. Even the batter tasted good! I just cooked a batch to freeze so i can grab a pancake when i'm in a hurry for breakfast, or to take to our favorite... -
ARCHIVED More Severe Reaction First Gluten After Starting Diet
samcarter replied to Krystens mummy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had a similar reaction after just one week off gluten. I wondered if i was really just imagining things (pre-gluten-free diet) and i ate a very small piece of cake, a bit before dinner. Within about ten minutes I was having the "hot flash" reaction I remembered. I started to feel a little sleepy. Later I had the munchies and a carton of yogurt didn... -
ARCHIVED Shampoos And Wheat
samcarter replied to samcarter's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks--I read in another thread that Unilever will always list wheat if it's in their products; I got Suave Clarifying Shampoo and one of their Professionals conditioners. I looked more closely at the Nexxus shampoo and conditioner--both have wheat FLOUR in them! Ack. The Burt's Bees stuff just smelled nasty after a couple of weeks, so I've tossed...
