  1. Heinz 57. Seriously, all I know about my ancestry for sure is that my dad is 1/2 German, 1/4 Irish, 1/4 Hungarian. My mom's ancestry is pretty much a mystery, since her people were so busy making the farms produce something that they were too busy to write down where everybody came from. So I have no idea what my ancestry is on my maternal side...
  2. Well, the headache is finally gone--after a week. Looking back I think it was either one of a few things: 1) Too much coffee--I had taken to drinking coffee every morning due to my extreme fatigue, but since going off gluten the fatigue is much reduced. Maybe my body just can't tolerate coffee every day. I started drinking tea instead a few days ago...
  3. Depending on how long you've been gluten free, an endoscopy and biopsy may not show flattened villi or intestinal damage. So at this point, it may be moot. I had constipation all my life, from childhood on, until after I had my kids, and then I would alternate between diarrhea and constipation. If you've had a positive dietary response, you probably...
  4. The price of gluten free speciality foods is why I'm doing my best to eat whole foods or foods that are naturally gluten free. I did buy a bag of pancake mix, mainly so that I can make "bread" to take with me to the restaurant so I'm not starving by the time our food arrives. I haven't found any gluten free frozen pizzas, so I'll probably look for a pizza...
  5. Suave works for me for about, oh, three days. Then it feels gross. I like Herbal Essence's Long Term Relationship Raspberry and Silk (I think that's the name). My hair is past my shouders and I generally flat iron it, and I need a lot of moisture.
  6. Funny thing, I thought I would start at 12, because all the other girls were starting, but when I didn't, I felt like "Ha! I got away with something!" I was happy not to have to deal with it. When I did start at 14, I was not happy, but my mom was ecstatic, because she started at 16 and thought something was wrong until she did. She was all "Yay! You don...
  7. Marissa, It is possible to have negative blood panels and still have celiac disease or gluten intolerance. I tested negative on EMA (the only test my dr had done) but I have responded positively so far to a dietary change. It sounds like you are having a positive response to diet, which could mean you either have celiac disease that the blood panels...
  8. Alli, My mom didn't start until age 16, I started at age 14. From her medical history and mine, I suspect both she and I had asymptomatic celiac disease. It will happen, all other things being equal. Even though I started "late", I went on to have kids and everything has been fine in that regard. My mom had two kids with very little trouble...
  9. While the ingredients of items are listed on a website, as somebody pointed out, the risk of cross contamination is huge, simply because every restaurant has different employees, different managers, different ways of doing things (even though they're not supposed to!). Their whole job is to get the food out fast, not neccessarily carefully. We don't go...
  10. Those are definitely possibilities, and you make a good point about it being one less thing to worry about in the morning if you know your shampoo is gluten free. Like I said, I read the labels on the shampoo I had when I decided to go gluten free. Nexxus actually had wheat FLOUR in it. Ugh. Tossed it out. I read on here that Suave does not hide...
  11. According to Dr Peter Green, the gluten protein cannot be absorbed through the skin (as I read in his book Celiac Disease: The Hidden Epidemic). There is a school of thought, though, that it is too easy to get shampoo or conditioner into one's mouth while showering (I have never had this happen), or if there are traces of the gluten on your hands, and...
  12. I would suspect a sinus/respiratory infection. i have had many and it's possible that you had one lingering before going off gluten, but the gluten symptoms covered it up. Or finally your body is fighting it (mucus is often the "dead soldiers"--white blood cells--that have been fighting the infection). Get thee to a doctor.
  13. So! I could probably just search on here for "withdrawal from gluten" but I would much rather whine about the constant headache behind my eyes I've had since cutting gluten out for good. My energy level is much better, and some horrible aches and pains that were getting bad are lessening. But the headache, oh my gosh. It's right behind my eyes and nose...
  14. I wonder if you're thinking of the Weston A Price diet. There is a book called 'Nourishing Traditions", and I owned it at one time, but the recipes were too involved for me and I was not interested in seeking out a dairy farmer who would sell me raw, unpasteurized milk and making my own kefir, thank you. NT doesn't think highly of wheat either, but says...
  15. Vanilla extract does not contain gluten. Just for future reference.
  16. i have read that some celiacs have issues with grain-fed meats. Cows, for instance, weren't mean to eat grains, but grass, since they are ruminants. Maybe check and see what the farmer is feeding the animals before they're sent off to market.
  17. Denise, I am having a similar experience. The first time I gave up gluten for four days, I felt awesome. Then I went back on it for the blood tests I THOUGHT my dr was going to do (he only did one, not the full panel!). I went off gluten right after that, and while I felt a little better, not as great as I did at first. I honestly think that gluten is...
  18. I was pleasantly surprised by another friend's reaction when I was at her house yesterday with my kids and we stayed for lunch. She was making sandwiches for her kids, I was making some for mine, and she asked what I'd like, she was going to make something for herself. I just said casually that I'd found out recently that wheat makes me sick (she did grab...
  19. That was incredibly rude. I've shopped at numerous health food stores and never gotten any queries about "why are you looking for dairy free foods" or the like. I wonder what that clerk does if somebody comes in asking for colon cleanse stuff. "So you're saying you're constipated? Are ALL of your family members constipated? Do you have a parasite?" Geesh...
  20. That's how my D is. It usually strikes as soon as I wake up the morning after a glutening. Because you had so much C, your bowels are probably still normalizing.
  21. Well, i haven't had the weight loss, constant diarrhea, that are the "typical" celiac symptoms. I tended to alternate between constipation and diarrhea. I only recently started to suspect gluten intolerance when I was having the horrible fatigue/drugged feeling after eating a meal of pizza on Saturday nights...and then I'd just want to space out. ...
  22. If I had a definitive diagnosis, I would never want to eat gluten again. Not even out of curiousity. You don't need to do a gluten challenge for a test, so I'm not understanding this desire to make yourself sick. Or to cause damage to your body, even if you don't feel it.
  23. It looks like your numbers are in the normal range, meaning there's no evidence of anti-gliadin or villi damage. But if that IgA "negative" means that you don't produce IgA, then you are IgA deficient and could still have celiac disease. That said...there are often negative blood test results. I read that blood tests can miss 30% of celiacs. My doctor...
  24. I have heard about gluten being an opoid. Not sure about the borderline diabetic, though. When my dr did my one piddly celiac blood test, he also had my non-fasting blood sugar tested; it was 127. If i had been fasting, that would have been borderline diabetes, but I had had breakfast a few hours before.
  25. My first period after going gluten free was three days early and only lasted two days. But I also noticed more cramping and gastrointestinal discomfort when it arrived. It takes the body a while to detox. And I have read that the "itch" is sometimes from leakage with gas that then irritates the area. Or the pH of your poop is changing and the body...
