  1. My husband commented today that I don't 'fall down' and bump against things as often as I did when we met ten years ago. I was a very, very clumsy kid, and it didn't get any better when I was a teenager. More often than not, I would have huge scabs on my knees from falling, and in college I had bruises up and down my legs from just bumping into things....
  2. For me it seems to depend on how much I ate. I had some Rice Dream frozen dessert that, after I ate it, I realized had barley malt sweetener in it. Within a few hours I had a nasty, horrible sinus headache. I hadn't had any dairy that day, so I know that wasn't it. The headache lasted all night and this morning was gone. Since the barley malt was only...
  3. If you're referring to my chocolate reference....I'm cutting chocolate out for a while because it is high in oxalates, which can contribute to some health issues. Not cutting it out because of gluten. I've never had a reaction to chocolate unless it had milk in it (though, thinking, maybe that Cadbury bar had gluten in it, the way my head started hurting...
  4. I completely understand your frustration. In less than one year, I've gone from eating anything that didn't eat me first, to eliminating gluten, dairy, apples, bananas, green beans, and now high-oxalate foods, including soy, in the hopes of resolving some irritating health issues. You know what is high oxalate? CHOCOLATE. Dangit. I tried a mint-carob...
  5. I get very itchy when I eat dairy (when will I learn, I know). The itchiness is first confined to my face, around the jawline. I recently noticed I'm more sensitive to hot water after I've had dairy, as well. Usually I love a super hot bath but after a dose of dairy it causes my skin to itch, like heat rash. You might try keeping a food diary, to see...
  6. If you're looking for a good nondairy, non-soy dessert, I like the Coconut Milk ice cream made by "So Delicious". It may have soy lecithin in it, though.
  7. My cramps are much, much worse when I've eaten dairy within a few days of my period. If i abstain from dairy completely, my period is so manageable my husband hardly knows I'm having it. I would suggest cutting dairy out of your diet, make sure you keep it out especially the week or two weeks leading up to your period, and see if things are better...
  8. My doctor only ordered the EMA test, which he said was the most specific for celiac disease. It came back negative, but I had a very positive response to the gluten free diet. I have since read that up to 20% of those with celiac disease have a negative EMA; they are called "seronegative" celiacs. Personally, I believe that the "gold standard" of diagnosis...
  9. I have read of a low-oxalate diet that can help with various symptoms, or that some people are sensitive to oxalates. Has anybody had any experience with the low-oxalate diet?
  10. You're welcome. I also have a severe allergy to dust mites, as did my brother (he was tested as a child, but never really treated, IMO). He died suddenly in his home, no warning. My parents refused a comprehensive autopsy; I suspect he died of anaphylaxis. His house was very dusty, he did not clean as he should have, due to having a demanding job and living...
  11. That's how I was diagnosed. I suspected gluten might be a problem for me; I was starting to literally fall asleep almost right after eating things like pizza or pasta, and I was sleepy all day long. Plus I was having serious digestive issues. I cut gluten out of my diet for a week and improved radically. My energy level shot up, it was crazy. I went...
  12. That's good info, but unfortunately I have determined that dairy also causes me problems as well. For Mother's Day DH found a Gluten Free Pantry cake mix and made me a little cake. He said, "This doesn't taste as good as regular cake," while I was savoring it. When you haven't had cake in eons, ANY cake with frosting is tasty!
  13. Silly to be so excited about it, but it feels good to finally have a list of all the foods that cause me problems. My gluten issues, I think, were always masking my other food issues. As my husband explained to our 9 year old (who was aghast that i can't eat the following foods), "The gluten was making Mom so sick, she couldn't tell the other foods...
  14. I got called for jury duty twice this year. The first time I filled out the form asking to be excused, explaining that I am a homeschooling parent, have three children, the youngest of whom is 2, my husband works full time and his employer would not give him time off to stay home and watch the children. We do not have any family in the area who could watch...
  15. Are you allergic to nuts? If not, I would suggest almond milk. I prefer the taste over rice and soy, though I do use soy on my cereal (it's the milk the rest of the household uses, so it's just convenient to me). Yep, don't worry about baking. Seek out foods that are naturally gluten free. Potatoes, steak like you're eating (mmm, steak), and again...
  16. I get one of those, on the roof of my mouth (soft palate) about once a month. I haven't bothered to keep track of whether it is caused by anything, though. It pops up in the same place every time. i just pop it and go on with my day.
  17. Nope, but mostly because McDonald's fries are gross. I always preferred Wendy's.
  18. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease. It's been my experience (since i have another autoimmune disease as well) that such disease effect everybody differently. I have psoriasis, but it's not covering my entire body or even large portions like it does on some people. Why? No idea. I think it's the same way with celiac. Some people look great. Some...
  19. The only testing I had done was an EMA blood test--the only blood test my GP was willing to run. Prior to that, I went on a gluten free diet voluntarily for a week or two, and felt so much better that I knew gluten had to be the culprit. Then i ate gluten again for two weeks, a lot of gluten, and felt just horrible. The test came back negative, after all...
  20. At first my digestion improved dramatically; then this year it started to go south again. I remembered that years ago I was tested (after an anaphylactic episode) for food allergies, and they told me I had "mild" reactions to bananas, apples and green beans. The allergist looked baffled and said that if i hadn't had any reactions to those foods, to keep...
  21. Are you simply replacing all the foods you can't have (wheat bread, pasta, cookies, et cetera) with rice-based ones? White rice is high on the glycemic index, and yes, it doesn't have the "staying power" that other foods have. If you're just having rice bread toast for breakfast, or Rice Chex, with a glass of juice, that's not going to last long or give...
  22. Eh. I have blood type B and while OJ was one of my favorite juices, I can't drink it anymore. I've read the blood type book and it claims type B can eat dairy...I can't eat dairy. I think a lot of that is coincidental. O is the most common blood type, and since celiac is estimated to be in 1 in 133 people...stands to reason most people with celiac would...
  23. That's very interesting about the fluid retention. I have a hard time losing weight, the only time I ever lost a significant amount of weight, I was eating only fruits and veggies (yep, kind of an eating disorder there) and exercising like mad. Or i was restricting my caloric intake to 1000 calories or less a day, and again, exercising like mad. But i seem...
  24. I was drinking coffee at home every morning---mostly because my youngest was still getting up at least once every night and I was needing the caffeine boost. I can't drink coffee black, so i was using half and half. Then dairy started bothering me. I tried soy creamers, and soy milk but they tasted horrible to me and I don't like eating a lot of soy. ...
  25. I haven't been able to eat oranges or drink orange juice for years now; it makes my psoriasis flare up horribly. I drink a glass, enjoy it, and within a day my psoriasis is bright red and painful, not just itchy.
