  1. I can see the arguement for both sides, but am leaning towards Pastor Dave's point of view. Ever since I've been diagnosed a Celiac, I can't tell you how many times I have leapt to the conclusion that a friend, or stranger for that matter, has celiac disease because of their appearance or symptoms. Absolutely offer it (where appropriate) as a source of...
  2. Thanks for the confirmation. When I went to the web site, I couldn't find the information, which is why I called them. I'll check out the URL you provided. I'm very glad to know that Quaker grits are o.k. H.
  3. I used to eat oatmeal every morning but needed to switch to either grits or cream of rice. I really like grits, but can only get the Quaker brand. I know that they produce oats and am concerned about cross contamination. Does anyone know if they are truly gluten-free? When I call the company, I get the usual legal liability runaround that they can't...
  4. Are you giving them any cold remedies, either prescription or over the counter? Some drug manufacturers use glutens. You may want to call and check. Helen.
  5. I'm not sure, I'm not lactose intolerant any more (thank goodness). I stopped eating anything with lactose in it for the first couple of months after being diagnosed and then slowly introduced it back into my diet. I've had little problems since, but then again, I only eat yogurt and, occasionally, cheese. I had a huge problem with eggs after I was...
  6. The next time you see your doctor, you may want to ask him about a pro-biotic. Apparently, Celiacs need to build up the necessary bacteria in their intestinal tracts. Sometimes if it's out of whack, bloating and gas can occur. Lactose might be a consideration, but if you elminate it and still have problems, you may want to give pro-biotics a try. They...
  7. Bobby Brown lipsticks and glosses (and makeup) are also gluten free. I contacted my representative and she checked herself. However, she did say that there are nut oils in their lip products, so if you're sensitive to nuts, you may want to be careful. I've used Neutrogena and have just stuck with what works. However, all the information in this thread...
  8. It happens from time to time. No matter how hard you try, something can slip by. On Friday, I decided to finish my husband's piece of flourless cake, not wanting a lot, just a taste. After the second bite, I noticed that there were a couple of odd tasting "lumps" and asked him if the cake had gone bad. It turned out that he didn't use a clean plate,...
  9. Whole Foods just announced its new gluten free bakery. Details: Whole Foods Market opened Whole Foods Market Gluten-Free Bakehouse in Morrisville, NC, the company's first dedicated gluten-free baking facility. The new 8,000-sq. ft. facility will produce 27 products, including breads, cookies, scones, biscuits, pizza crusts, whole pies and brownies, to meet...
  10. This is great, we love Chili's, but is anyone concerned about how these foods are prepared? I always worry that they are cooked on the same grill where a hamburger bun was just toasted, or the like. If I'm being overly paranoid, please say so. Being somewhat new to this, I seem to be eliminating eating out instead of going for it. Anyone have guidelines...
  11. Are some/most Progresso soups gluten-free? I get a little concerned when they appear to be gluten-free, but not sure if they are prepared in the same place, or in the same vats, as their pasta soups, etc. H.
  12. I know it's going to be tough to adapt your daughter to a new diet, but there are so many great gluten-free foods she will enjoy, that the transition may not be that difficult. I agree that you need to keep her on glutens until after you visit the GI doc. Good luck to you. H.
  13. Barbara, If you have been gluten free and then ate oatmeal, then that's probably the culprit. Unless you live in Europe, most oats in the US (not sure about Canada) are processed in the same place as wheat and rye. It's not that oats contained the gluten we can't eat, it's the cross contamination process. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 3 years...
  14. Carrie, in your initial post you mention that you still have bloating, gas and other GI issues, but your meds help with that. Two thoughts: are you inadvertantly ingesting glutens and are your meds gluten-free? My doc told me to take Tums for the calcium, since calcium pills upset my stomach, but Tums are NOT gluten free. I now take Viactiv and I'm fine...
  15. I wouldn't do anything until/if he shows symptoms. There is so much value in grains for those who can eat it that I wouldn't eliminate it just in case. But, that's my opinion. It might be easier for you if you switch the whole family to your diet for simplicity's sake. I'd talk with your doctor about it. Good luck. H.
  16. You never know, when you become gluten free, you might feel so much begter that you'll actually like the new foods. It's not just loosing the foods you love, it's learning a whole new way of eating, shopping and subjecting your family to a new diet - or preparing two distinct types of food. My husband and I have separate toasters in our kitchen because...
  17. Well, you have two choices: to be gluten free or not gluten free. That's about it If you have Celiac Disease and you decide to be gluten free, you will feel so much better that you probably won't want to go back to your old diet. I, too, had sporadic reactions to the same foods prior to eliminating glutens from my diet. Now that I'm gluten free, I...
  18. Maybe the mayo was a little off? Not sure. I know that we had an alfalfa sprout "alert" here on the West Coast a couple of years ago. I can't remember why, but I stopped eating them and haven't gone back to them. It could just be plain old food poisoning. I'd toss the remaining mayo, sprouts and turkey and buy some fresh. If the same thing happens again...
  19. I totally agree with Tarnalberry, I wouldn't risk it. If you have questions or concerns about any food or supplement, you'll only wonder after you've taken the vitamin, which will cause unnecessary stress. I wouldn't eat anything that I considered suspect, no matter how many assurances I have. Trust your judgement because you know more about celiac disease...
  20. I know how overwhelming this can be. First off, you have two young children. Stressfull all by itself. Throw in a child with celiac disease and another with undiagnosed symptoms PLUS a move, well, I understand your situation. Since you are in a new area, maybe you can use it to "interview" several pediatricians before settling on one you like. I agree...
  21. Let us know how the test turns out. H.
  22. I agree. It was pretty painless and I can't remember a thing. The worst part for me was the nervousness I experiencec in anticipation of the procedure. Everyone told me it was going to be a piece of cake, but was concerned anyway. And you know what? They were right. It was a piece of (gluten-free) cake! I've not known anyone who has vomited afterwards...
  23. He could be lactose intolerant or have a dairy allergy. You very much describe the symptoms my son had at that age. He is now 23 and just had his endoscopy for celiac disease. After I was diagnosed earlier this spring, I immediately thought my son had it because our symptoms were so much a like. But, his blood work and biopsy just came back negative...
  24. I downloaded the Clan Thompson electronic list to my PC and to my Palm Pilot. The PC format has an easy to prepare shopping list feature that you can print out when finished and take to the store. The database on the Palm is a great back up to check out the impulse buys or to simply verify a purchase. They update these lists quarterly, so they are information...
  25. If you like cheese puffs, Pirate's Booty is a great alternative. They are gluten-free and I've been eating them with great enjoyment. I believe their Fruity Booty and Veggie Booty are also gluten-free. H.
