Hello,
I am hoping maybe someone out there can help me. I keep reading post after post how IBS symptoms disappear after going "totally gluten free." I also recently just read another article that Gluten Intolerance is inherited, same as Celiac disease. Is this true? The reason I ask is because my mother, who is completely overweight, was dx wih a carbohydrate intolerance many years ago. I am starting to wonder if it was that or really a gluten intolerance.
Also, I use a shared microwave at work to heat up my lunch. I bring my food from home so that I know what i am putting into my body. Am I not supposed to be using the microwave for fear of CC??? Sorry for all of the dumb questions, it's just that sometimes I think I may be in denial with this whole thing and wonder why my IBS symptoms aren't clearing up. It's been 10 monhs and I really, REALLY miss eating a lot veggies...among other things.

I'm new to all this too. I've been just googling recipes and I've been pretty lucky to find stuff. One thing I've been doing is making chicken breast in the oven. I've been cutting up Oinion and putting it on the chicken and wrapping it in tin foil and letting it bake. It comes out really juicy and delicious. It's not really a substitute for salt or anything but it adds some flavor.

Welcome! The problem with Onion is that it is SOOO bad for gastritis. I tried a little on my fish last night, just to get a little bit of flavor and wound up in the bathroom all night. Thank goodness my husband is a wonderful cook and has adapted to my ever-changing needs. We use a lot of different oils to add flavor to food, such as: Basil Oil, Sesame Oil, Almond oil. Although I can't use the almond due to allergies, my husband uses it a lot and loves it. White Rice Vinegar and Agave syrup are wonderful together. Agave is a natural sweetner made from the Tequilla plant and can be found in a gluten free/health food store. I've been putting it on everything!

Dina, I would guess that the reason that you are having trouble with carbs right now is that your intestines might not have healed? Most of us here found that eating gluten-free bread/cake/cookie/pancake substitutes in the beginning was very hard on gluten-damaged intestines. Once the damage has healed, it is much easier to digest the carbs--but most of us also figured out that we were eating way too many bread products anyway, and that those should not be the mainstay of a healthy diet, whether you are celiac or gluten intolerant.
Many people who have obvious reactions to gluten but have negative test results ARE celiac, but have not had enough damage to test positive (or their tests were done wrong, or the doctors were idiots, or...) And there ARE other conditions that can cause intestinal damage similar to celiac, such as Lyme Disease (which can cause gluten intolerance and a whole host of other issues), candida, mercury poisoning, and even severe dairy intolerance.
But I think your first step in determining whether or not your child has a wrong diagnosis is to look at antibodies (should be in the blood work) and dietary response (positive or negative).
I really couldn't tolerate carbs and testes positive to SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). Once I took a course of antibiotics the symtoms subsided and I gained 12 lbs. I Already did the candida cleanse with a special Dr. in NYC. Was on that diet for 1 1/2 yrs. I had Mercury poisoning last year and had two fillings removed. My dentist thought I was burning the roof of my mouth with cheese, turns out the Mercury was eating away at the rood of my mouth. I also tested positive for lots of food allergies. Casein, all dairy, goat and egg to name a few. I take the Glutenease when I am having a heavy carb meal. My Gene test is at the end of October and I am very curious to see what that says. My mother was dx with a Carb intolerance many yrs ago. Now I wonder if it was that or Gluten?

I don't know why my signature doesn't post, another kink I am trying to work out. Thank you all for the replies. I should have noted that I am NOT Celiac and only Gluten Intolerant at this point in time. Both negative bloodwork and endoscopy. Have gene test at the end of this month. I appreciate the feedback and can only add that I take the supplement because it does help with digesting with carbs. I currently have problems digesting carbs, rice especially. I think because most of the gluten free stuff is mostly rice. Again, thank you for the feedback.

I don't use it all the time, but when I got out to eat, or if I really want to cheat. So far I've had a lot of success with it. I didn't at first, then waited a few months and tried it again. Just curious if anyone else has tried it. I also came across a very interesteing website so thought I would post it. Open Original Shared Link.

After being "glutened" I experience blisters and sores on tongue and in my mouth. Is this common?

I don't know if there is a test for it. I've asked both GI and Allergist and both didn't know of any. I too have severe bloating/flatulance and stomach issues upon digesting fruit. I didn't have it for three days, then ate some grapes yesterday. I was in pain all day. The list of foods I can eat is diminishing fast.

So sorry to hear all of this. It does sound very familiar to me. I did the whole candida diet (almost 1 1/2 yrs, thinking the whole time I couldn't tolerate yeast, or the carbs and sugar that parasites and yeast feed off of. I was only part right. At a certain point in the program, I had hives and was itchy all of the time. Of course the doctor attributed this to "die-off" and told me to continue and not stop. For almost 2 weeks straight I could not stop itching. It turned out that I was allergic to the probiotics and supplements (most made from milk/wheat). I stopped the program and then went Gluten Free. The majority of problems stopped, but then slowly crept back. Finally the digestive doctor ordered a breath test for SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), which came back positive. He gave me a round of antibiotics and within 2 weeks I gained 12 lbs. The bacteria in my stomach was consuming what little sugar/carbs I was eating at the momemt, thereby I was suffering from malbutrition. Also, it was preventing me from digesting any carbs. I would get bloated/gassy almost instantly. Now that is gone I have been Gluten free since August 07. I still battle what to eat because I have a ton of food allergies, but feel so much better than last year. I hope this helps. Digestive Enzymes also help.

Pantene is gluten free and where did you get the idea it has oats in it. I react to oats on my skin and I have used Pantene for over 6 yrs now, no reaction!!!
Tell me which one has oats so I never get that one, please.

I was in the same position as you last summer. Everthing I was eating was causing a reaction. I went online to Open Original Shared Link and ordered an Ige/IgG food allergy test. It turns out that everyting I was eating I was allergic too. BUT, my allergies were not immediate, they were all delayed, which stayed in my system for days. I was shocked at the things that came up that I would have never even thought of. Anyway, this is definitely a start.
As far as corn goes, I now have issues with that as well due to Gastritis. So, I am Gluten free, corn free (gast), egg-free (allergic), soy free (allergic), nut-free (allergic) casein free (allergic), and can't eat many fruits and veggies due to gastritis. After reading many posts, I decided again totry some digestive enzymes. I will do anything to try and eat normal again.
Direct labs also has a Leaky Gut test, which I took last year and it was negative. I've done so much research on Leaky Gut/Yeast issues. I do strongly believe that once the gut is irritated it is EXTRA sensitive to almost everything. I run into this every now and again when taking pain meds.

I am just curious. I was using Biolage shampoo and conditioner for years. My scalp started to itch and flak, then I got sever eczema. Went to the dermatologist and she gave me this horrible chemcial to put on my scalp. I switched to Pantene, which has oats in it. I was fine at first, and then the same thing started all over again. Is it possible to be that sensative. I've checked all of my hair products (there are quite a few), and all have Hydrolized (sp?) wheat protein.

Dina - I had a IgG and IgA done in Jan and doc said the both were normal but this is the same allergy doc that told me that my allergy med would help with my wheat " allergy"
Meds help if I am have an allergic reation like my ears itching, eye watering nose icky type stuff but not when it comes to my other problems duh. Not a smart doc when it come to celiac but he was not a gastro doc not sure he was good allergy doc now that I think of it but oh well. I just know that I feel better when I don't have gluten and that to me tells me something so I think I will listent to my body.
I know, I get so frustrated. One second I can eat something and I am fine. I eat too much of it and I am itchy all over. Do you know of any people who are Gluten Intolerant who CAN'T use what shampoos or hair products?

I have not "officially" been dx with Celiac Disease but I have been gluten-free since Jan of this year. I have had stomach problems for many many years and had two endoscopys(sp). One doc told me I had IBS and the other told me I had gastorisist and both sent me on my way with no follow up just eat more fiber.
I saw an Allergy specialist in Jan and he did the sctrach test and I was positive for most all inhalants and a lot of foods. I was really confused on the blood work he did but he said it came back neg for celiac. But I know how my body feels I know better then he does so I went gluten free and have had good reslults and can really tell when I have had something with gluten in by accident. When this happens it take at least a week if not more for my body to get back to what is normal.
I also suffer with MS and have notice that with in the last year my teeth are breaking, I now have 4 broken teeth in my mouth. I am wondering if this a result of malabsortion.
I know I am rambling sorry I tend to that MS makes me have brain fog a lot. My question would be, do you think it would be worth it for me to find a doc in colorado who know about celiac and should I get tested. I have read that in order for it to be accurate I would have to eat wheat again I do not think I am welling to do that. I really do not what to be sick not when I am just beginning to feel I little bit better.
Any advice would be very welcome.

I am new to this site and have similar symptoms to you. I have not been diagnosed, but having been Gluten Free since August 2007, I can tell you that I am feeling so much better. It took some time to get it right, but I am almost there. The only problem I am having now is the gastritis and erosive esophagus. I was diagnosed in January 08 with that. I went in for endoscopy for Celiac and came out with something else. I asked my Dr if I would have to follow any special diet for the Gastritis and he said no. So, I kept eating the way I normally would, minus the gluten. However, with GERD, Gastritis, Heartburn, etc, you need to stay away from onions, garlic, beans, coffee, chocolate, stringy meats, peppermint, etc. When I have any of these foods, I get gassy and bloated almost immediately. I've been on various meds for it, and after 4-5 weeks they all stop working and I'm on to a new one. The only reason I think I am having problems is if Gluten is somehow slipping into my diet and messing me up. I will be fine, and then I am bloated and gassy for 1-2 weeks, and feeling sick. Then I'm fine again. So fed up with it and I am going for genetic testing at the end of October. My other choice was to be on gluten breakfast, lunch and dinner for 5 wks. If I did that I think I would wind up in the ER and would have enough gas to blow up the state of NJ...LOL. All kidding aside, maybe something in slipping in and causing you problems. Did you go for allergy testing through the blood?

I am new to all of this, but have suffered as well with itchy scalp, which usually comes from any hair care products that have wheat or oats in them. I went SLS free for a long time, but hair didn't feel right. I use Jason Fragrance Free products and they work wonderfully. Now, the only time I get an itchy scalp is from eggs, vinegar or soy.

I am gluten free since August 07. So it was just a year for me. I too tested positive for H Pylori and they gave me antibiotics to clear it up. Right after that is when I started having problems with Gastritis and now have IBS. So those things with the gluten intolerance AND and food allergies I feel like I am going no where fast. Now I am sesative to fragrance and certain house hold cleaners. I started Gluten Free after elimination diet and positive allergy tests. I just feel better when it's not in my system. Two blood tests confirmed negative results, and my endoscopy showed gastritis with erosive esophagus, not Celiac. But, the more I read on this site it seems as though you have to be ON gluten for at least three months to be getting any kind of a positive result. If I did that I would be real sick. Everyone says the Gastritis will go away, but I've tried: Prevacid, Nexium, Aciphex, and now Zantac. They all start out fine, and then after about 4-5 weeks on the meds and feeling wonderful, I start to feel bloated, have horrible gas, and terrible pain in the pit of my stomach. I had stopped eating fruit for a few months and started back up again prior to my endoscopy and I am wondering if the fruit is causing all of this. I also have sugar cane, casein, egg, goat milk, oat, banana, almond, garlic and plenty other allergies.
PS - I can't take Licorice because of IBS. Certain things are great for IBS, but harm gastritis. Other things are great for Gastritis and hurt the IBS. I feel like I can't win and tired of having pain in my stomach all the time.
I had gastritis for 2 years prior to diagnosis. Its much better now. Digestive enzymes helped.It also turned out I had a case of h pylori--celiacs are more prone to this apparently. I took a course of treatment for it but one thing that helped the most was mastic gum (Mastica).
Also DGL--a form of licorice was very soothing to my stomach.
How long have you been gluten-free?

I am gluten free, but also suffer from Gastritis and food allergies. I think from what I read a lot of you also have food allergies. Is this related? Also, does anyone have gastritis?

Hello all,
I am Gluten-Free, Corn-Free, Egg-Free, Soy-Free, Dairy-Free, and Nut-Free. On top of this craziness I was diagnosed with Gastritis/Erosive Esophagus in January. So that diet eliminates: onion, garclic, scallion, broccoli, beans of any kind, citrus Fruits, anything carbonated, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, etc. It is very difficult to eat as my menu is extremely limited. I did cut out fruit totally for a few months. When I started eating it again I was diagnosed with Gastritis. Not sure if it was a coicidence or am I intolerant to fruit as well. Just wondering if anyone has similar issues.

Thanks. Only a food diary isn't the issue as I know what I am allergic to. Since being dx with IBS and Gastritis I've had to cut most vegetables (string beans, broccolli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, corn, etc). Anything that can cause gas and will cause gas will set me off with bloating and gas. That leaves me eating he same vegetables and food day and day out. It is extremely frustrating to say the least. But yet I keep reading that symptoms virtually disappear after going gluten free, so I am wondering why mine haven't. As long as I stick to the certain foods I can have I am okay. There are days I am fine and days I am not. the problem is that the medication taken 1/2 hour before every meal really makes me sleepy. I would love to get off of it completely, but if I cut one more thing out of my diet I will literally starve to death! I just thought that maybe, somehow all gluten was not removed from my diet, but I've read where people use brand new pots/pans/utensils, etc. Would that be enough to make me sick?
