  1. I was having a few symptoms (lightheaded, headaches, thirsty, slow to heal, etc.) and my doc tested me about a week ago and my results came back pre-diabetic which means my numbers are higher than normal but not quite high enough for actual diabetes. I was at risk anyway since my father developed Type II a few years ago, I just thought I had a few more years...
  2. You may want to re-think the turkey if you are lactose intollerant. Almost all turkeys are coated with lactose to help them brown. I have not even been able to eat any turkey products for years. Even lunch meat which I thought would be safe made me sick. Good luck -Kate
  3. I found the article, it requires a free registration. -Kate Open Original Shared Link
  4. Here I was thinking the idea of having to give up sugar (carbs) in addition to the gluten, casien/lactose, corn, peanuts, and soy beans would be HORRIBLE! I was really feeling for you. Well, latest blood tests came back with elevated blood sugar levels so guess what, I now get to eliminate sugar too. As to non-artificial sweeteners, you can use Spenda...
  5. Thanks to everyone, I will take my own food just to be safe. After all, they are family. One more question then - my boss and his wife throw a huge holiday dinner for the staff of 12 (small department) and she is an excellent cook, truely AMAZING. However, even before I was gluten-free, there was little I could eat due to lactose/casien intollerance...
  6. I have had the same problem. No weight gain or loss, little to no gas, but the clothes around the stomach area are tighter. I have no ideas since why...nothing to suggest a current/different GI problem at the moment. -Kate
  7. OK, my first overnighter with a gluten-free diet. In the past, due to lactose/casien intollerance, I always brought my own food for short functions, dinner, BBQ, parties, etc. or ate limited items and for extended visits, made due with limited foods. Now I have a weekend with my husbands family and while they are all very understanding, they don't take...
  8. My oldest son had a lot of the same symptoms at school - we eventually had him tested which showed he is Dyslexic and Disgraphic. Wow, OK, well, a year later, we finally talked more in-depth with his pediatritrion and after having his teachers fill out surveys, he started him on meds (I was trying to avoid the need for meds) for ADHD - that was 3-4 years...
  9. I noticed the warning on the Rice Dream box so I have been putting off trying - what is the brand of rice milk that is gluten-free? Thanks... -Kate
  10. Well, after my stomach calmed down, I added other foods back in, catiously. After eating peanuts as a snack a few days in a row and realizing, hey! my stomach hurts, I have gas, etc. I think this might be a problem. I have since discovered that even stuff I thought was safe, i.e., did NOT have peanuts even reading the ingredients but having the same symptoms...
  11. After I discovered the lactose/casien intolloerance, I then discovered the gluten intollerance. Once those were eliminated from my diet. I discovered a peanut intollerance, a soy bean intollerance, a corn intolloerance, and a peanut intollerance. Corn syrup is used in a LOT of foods and a lot of foods contain soy bean products and/or are made using peanut...
  12. Thanks!!!! I may try the Kaluha tomorrow...the weekend coffee just doesn't seem complete without it. I cannot have corn either so that one is out but thanks. The vodka I did have (can't remember the label) did give me problems so I have been avoiding anything close and it said it was a grain product. Rum is gluten-free - some of the dark rums may...
  13. After eliminating gluten, I discovered I have similar responses to corn, soy bean , and peanut products - this in additon to lactose/casien intollerance. Even the small amount in the completely lactose free margarins make me sick. I use olive oil for all cooking and am trying to eliminate the need for anything else. I have not figured out how to bake without...
  14. OK, what about Kaluha? I love it, but it is made with vodka (many of which are made with grain and not potato). I tried the vodka I had at home after going gluten-free and it cramped up my stomach. So I looked and of course, mine was a grain product. I am looking for potato vodka in my little town so that I can add that in as an evening refreshment...
  15. Found it! Canola oil comes from the rape seed, which is part of the mustard family of plants. -Kate
  16. I was wondering about Canola oil myself - what is canola made from? Is it corn? Sorry for the stupid question...thanks. -Kate
  17. I went through all the "anger" about giving up all milk and then all casien products 4-5 years ago, now the smell of cheese and sour cream nauseates me. I drank milk with EVERY meal and it was in almost everything I ate. I have been gluten-free for 6 weeks now and I have been discovering there is a lot out there to mimic the old life style, as long...
  18. I have a GI specialist but have not seen him recenly. He diagnosed me several years ago with IBS and Lupus is in both sides of my family but I have not seen anyone for that yet. I wondered about Lupus; a lot of my symptoms match those and are just as hard to pinpoint to a specific problem. The fever is not horrible, just draining and not much fun. ...
  19. That is great news...I lost a WHOLE bunch of weight several years ago and then gave up all milk products and was able to put weight back on, however, I have gotten re-married and cooking and the ALL the weight went back on and am now 25 pounds overweight. Now that I am gluten-free, LF, PF, CF, and SF the weight is slowly dropping again. -Kate
  20. I have a problem with peanuts - even food I think is safe (no peanuts) and then look back after the pain begins and realize it is made with Peanut Oil. I discovered this problem after I eliminated gluten from my diet. I have also since discovered soy and corn. I already was lactose/casein intollerant. Anyway...fruit, veggies, and meat seem to be safe.
  21. Wow - I have been having problems with dizzyness for a couple of years now and have not been able to attibute it to anything. Maybe now that gluten-free this will go away. I have been lactose/casean free for 4+ years. Does anyone run a low-grade fever for no apparent reason (for up to a week)? I have been hospitalized, tested, etc. with no reason for...
  22. Oops I forgot - I cannot drink soy milk anymore either. I am preparing to try some rice milk -Kate
  23. Well, after several years of thinking I had a gluten intollerance and two doctors suggesting I get tested - which I chose not to do - I finally decided to try to eliminate gluten from my diet. WOW!!! What a difference!! I felt normal...it was truly amazing to me, I could live without pain and not be tied to the bathroom and not "stink" up the whole house...
